Press Release: Dominion National News
-May 19th, 2007
21:11 DST (Dominion Standard Time)

My name is Michael Sanberg and I have had the pleasure and distinction of being the sole national correspondent for the three previous monumental rises in population, reaching the tiers of one billion, two billion, and three billion citizens. Now I have once again been given the honor of writing this column and report about the evolution of our society. I saw it all - I was there for the first time the population reached ten digits, I was there for the beginnings of this new era, I was there for the great counting error, and now I am here for this...

As this is the first report of the event this evening, you cannot yet know the sorrow and heavy heart with which I write this piece. Despite the best doctors and care in the Dominion, the four billionth baby born lapsed into cardiac arrest just seconds after first breathing on its own. While doctors rushed to save the newborn, there was nothing they could do except pronounce him dead at the age of only one minute. He had no name...

For but a moment, the population temporarily dipped under four billion, the first time such an incident has happened at any major population level. However, with no fanfare and recognition (until half an hour later), the "second four billionth citizen" was born without complications and is currently healthy. Her last name is being withheld for security reasons, but it is now confirmed that the newborn girl, Sally, will receive all the benefits awarded to the billionth babies.

Truly this is a bittersweet day in the Dominion

For the Child that did die I would like to give a moment of silence, even though she had no name she should be respected for dieing for her country

We congratulate the nation of DMG on this monumental acheivement. We are deeply grieved that this one child has been lost. We ask that DMG treat his family the same as the families of all the other billionth babies, for even though no price can be placed on life, this will help ease his passing.

Though the notion seems very materialistic, we are a capitalist society and we have been debating the issue since the unfortunate event occurred.

In the end we have decided to establish a fund for the unknown child's family with an initial government deposit of ten million USD as well as donations made by the billions of the nation. We have asked every citizen to donate just one penny...

As well as the fund, we are creating a monument in his memory and to represent all those that still die tragically to disease. It will serve to remind everyone that even in this age of prosperity where diseases have been wiped out and illnesses are very low, there are still tragedies that occur and battles that need to be fought.

An excerpt from letter from Senator Alexius Caldwell of the Armed Republic of Maraguista

To aid such endeavors as the charity work of parents who lose children in childbirth, we are awarding two million gold coins to the family of lost child and organizing the International Infancy Loss Foundation or IILF...we congragulate you on reaching such a high number...one day we might reach the same...this is truly a bittersweet moment.

Response to Maraguista

We thank you for your concern and offerings. The family will be comforted as much by the coins as the notion that other people in the world care for their loss.
