Mekugi

[Six months ago, Orseos/Archos Island Chain, Haven]
Silence filled the air of the Orseos Mountain Range on the small island of Orseos itself, merely a single pearl in the necklace that was the Archos Island Chain. A territorial holding of the Armed Democratic Republic of Mekugi. This was no an uncommon occurance the shear mountain valley was filled with fog from the cooling air as it rose up the valleys gargantuan height to the skies above. The whole valley disappeared as the fog formed into light puffy clouds that had always covered this peticular mountain valley since its creation when massive glaciers carved the ragged valley from the earths crust.
This glacial valley constricted and then finally opened to the sea in what was the islands only truly accessible natural port, though for years visitors to the island had used the constructed port on the opposite end of the island, a port that though usually empty was now crowded with dozens of ferries, and destroyers.
Archos had always been a place of beauty and seclusion well known as both a military testing site as well as an almost internationally acclaimed nature preserve, 'almost' famous that is that no-one in the last few years had been allowed on the Island of Orseos, and with its rocky coast few had ever tried, or desired to brave the prospect of death by military police.
The silence that so represented this island was suddenly and abruptly interrupted, not by the screech of an eagle or the sound of an over intoxicated tourist, no the silence was broken by the deafening roar and the shudder of the earth as several hundred explosions echoed across the valley shattering the islands peace, but not its seclusion. The fog was at once lifted from the valley as great clouds of dust clouded the valley before finally settling for a few moments the look down from the skies above was clear a trench some five hundred meters wide and two kilometers long had blasted roughly in the side of the mountain valley next to the sea, though the view did not last long perhaps half an hour or so it was enough to expose the valeys secrets and when the fog settled back in the cool air returned the valley and its secrets back into the security of the fog.

Bang....
Bang...
Bang...
An endless din filled the crew station of the ocean going pile driver 'Asos' it had been on site for three months now driving large steel tubes into a shallow sea mount with the co-operation of military and civilian contractors, over twenty seven ships were busy at work either driving the meter wide tubes or filling them with sand and concrete, but at their current pace they would be able to walk over a kilometer in the middle of the ocean with little more than a decent length two-by-four. there had been no explanation for their task and really they were in open non-territorial waters, outside of shipping lanes and so it had been several weeks since they had seen any vessels pass by.
'God damn machine at this rate I'll be driving piles in my head for the rest of my life...'
Another associate looked up from his work station seeing the man enter monitoring the piles current depth and smiled, he hadn't heard a word the man said, though hearing protection was recommended only those who had done this long enough could stand to go without for more than few hours.
'Whats the current report?'
The man asked the associate and the associate smiled at him but didn't respond. When the man mouthed the words again he pointed to his hand and pretended to scribble a note, the associate finally realized and shouted out.
'EIGHT METERS LEFT SIR!'
The man sighed and walked back out the room walking down a another set of stairs and walking through a set of double doors, and then a bulkhead into a sound dampened area. Taking his hard hat off he took off his helmet and looked at the project map, he had only some knowledge of the vastness of the project but he knew the work are encompassed some three kilometers in diameter and yesterday they had received a blanket fax dealing with 'proper direction of sediment in project area A' though he had no idea what it was referring to as project section A had been filled with concrete months ago.
The man simply sighed and poured himself a cup of coffee, no sense in working too hard, he was after all under contract for the next three years.
