Der Unterdreadnought

Korridan
08-05-2007, 06:35
Korridan's position in the Antarctic continent makes it nearly impossible for conventional fleets to access the nation, and there are security concerns in revealing the position of Korridan's secretive shipyards and ports. In order to deal with this an entirely new class of submarine has been developed at the urging of Comrade Ian, Der Unterdreadnought I. Korridan has only begun to produce these and modifications may be made depending on situational changes. Korridan would consider making this a joint development with armaments corporations more experienced then itself provided the right offer.
(My first design so any advice/criticism/taunts are welcome. Depending on the reaction to this my stats may be edited for more realism/efficacy modifications)

Beam: 46 metres
Draft: 24 metres
Surfaced:50,000 tonnes
Submerged: 70,000-100,000 tonnes
Propulsion: 6×OK-650 pressurized-water nuclear reactors
→250 megawatt each
4×VV-type steam turbines
→50 megawatt each
4 propellers
10 Deployable mini propellers
Complement: 500 men

Armament:
4x 16-inch Railguns
8x 16 inch (406 mm) / 50-caliber Mark 7 naval guns

A number of options to be added, armament is customizable

Defense:
6x COIL (Chemical Iodine Intercept Laser) Point Defense centers for the interception and destruction of incoming torpedo's/missiles.
14x Torpedo Interceptors (Small Torpedo tubes located on sides of the Submarine, launch smaller torpedo's to destroy incoming missiles. Can be configured to target depth charges)
A number of options to be added, Defense is customizable

It looks pretty cool man, I'm thinkin' of purchasin' some.

Excuse my ignorance, but how much power have you assigned to the railguns?

OOC: I'm still working out the final specifications, but 4 of the Nuclear Reactors+Conventional Engines are what powers the Submarines movement and electronic systems and that basic stuff, the additional 2 reactors are for use as a backup and for powering the COIL system and rail guns. I will be calculating just how much power goes to each later today and depending on the total I may add or remove some guns/point defense. I also plan to utilize one of those Sattelite Blinders on the Deck to help it maintain a low profile.

IC:

The Empire is extremely interested in accuiring several of these magnificent submarines which look extremely promising. Once all technical difficulties have been ironed out and the price has been determined, do inform us.

Yours Sincerely,
Jane Howard,
Imperial Naval Command.

How do you prevent submersion in salt water from corroding the rails on the railguns and causing shorts?

The Railguns are kept out of contact with the seawater in a separate compartment, that opens for the gun when it is ready to fire. The process of deploying it is fairly quick and should not affect in any significant way the advantage of surprise that this will give. The Compartments after submerging are drained fully of anything that might have gotten in, the water being added to the ballast.
