NEW TERRABT, AURIC - New Terrabt recently announced its intent in creating a voluntary eugenics program for citizens interested in preventing disease and aiding in scientific research.

Volunteers would be paid, if the program proposal passes in the council. Despite this, public outcry throughout the city was moderate, though outside Auric, few citizens were concerned. Mikhail Vladipostok, a citizen of Elopia, said, "I really couldn't care less what those knuckleheads in Auric do. It's their funeral."

Premier Owen M. Drescht commented, "If the proposal passes in Council, then I will not stand in its way. If it is the will of the people, it must be done."

Official USSW Commentary on Voluntary Threshian Eugenics Program
Although we find the idea behind eugenics to be flawed, insofar as it is often motivated by the simple desire to establish oneself as part of a genetic class structure more insidious than even bourgeois capitalism or its still more stratified predecessors, we are willing to give the Threshian proposal the benefit of the doubt in this particular instance.
Mr. Vladipostok's sentiments echo my own, so long as the program remains voluntary and dedicated to sincere medical research. Provided that, Premier Drecht has said it succinctly and states what my position would be in a similar circumstance here; were it not the fact that horror at the word 'eugenics' is one of the few things our three variant 'Communist' parties and the elven-dominated 'Greens' as it were can all remotely agree on, with the 'Pinks' in the Social Democrats left in the lurch as usual for those who try to please everybody as a matter of official policy. I doubt any law approving a medical eugenics program would be getting through that National People's Congress, so me signing anything would be simply unlikely. Hopefully in my opinion, Premier Drecht won't be in that position either; but if he is, he has my condolences at the need to do a distasteful duty we all share from time to time.

In a preliminary vote today, the Council was split evenly on the issue of a Eugenics program. The two representatives from Auric where, naturally, in favor, as such a program would bring financial increase to their region. The two representatives of Elopia where against the issue, and the two representatives of Thresh were split evenly. A poll throughout the nation showed that 50% of citizens were for a Eugenics program, with 44% against one and 3% unsure, with a 3% margin of error.

Premier Drescht issued a response urging the populace to lobby their support with their Councilmen, so that the will of the people could be accurately followed.
