The Galileo-class vessel Francisco Pizarro dropped out of hyperspace in orbit of 581 c, a potentially habitable world only 20 light years from Earth. It was in orbit of a small red dwarf that loomed nearby, its apparent size in the sky being much greater than Sol from Earth orbit.
"Commence scans," Captain Gerald Winters ordered. "Signal the rest of the task force to follow."
"Task force acknowledging our signal, arriving now," the communications officer noted as an additional force of fifteen Kusanagi-class Frigater and twenty Trondheim-class destroyers dropped from hyperspace in close proximity to the Pizarro. "Task force has arrived."
"Surface reads habitable, but its gravity is 1.6 times that normally accepted for colonization. Surface reads poor in mineral wealth... modest amounts of ores... but plenty of water and land. Computer simulations indicate that this world might be acceptable for agricultural uses and as a military outpost."
"Send landing parties," Captain Winters ordered. "Make sure they are prepped and equipped for slightly above normal gravity."
"Aye sir."
