VALIANT CLASS BATTLESHIP

Overview:
The Valiant Class Battleship is the height of Questarian Battleship engineering. Fast, tough, and heavily armed she is easily capable of taking on any foreign battleship at least 100,000 tons heavier than herself, and this was even part of the design specification for the vessel laid down by the Navy Bureau. The Valiant is considered the creme-de-creme of the Navy's Battle Arm, fast, well protected, and well armed.

The primary armament was the first thing considered. Clocking in at just over three and a half times heavier than the Ajax, the Navy Design Bureau took consideration in what armament it should request. At first they wanted the ship to be armed with 24" guns - then the Navy's Senior Staff objected and argued the case for a 21" gun. The discussion continued and there were some in the Navy that even argued that the ship should use the same 18" guns the Ajax used in an ABC/XYZ configuration. However, the Senior Staff, with the support of several of the nation's key design draughters, won through and it was noted the ship should be armed with at least 12 x 21" guns. Next was the speed. Again the Navy Design Bureau still didn't give up - they wanted their original design with the dual quad 24" and extremely heavy armour, capable of competing with superdreadnoughts. However, the Senior Staff wanted something different. They wanted the Valiant (known as Battleship L) to be fast and armoured enough to take its own gun power. Again they won through and the list of expectations for the design teams to fullfill when set:

1. The ship must be armed with at least 12 x 21" guns.
1. The ship must be armoured to withstand said guns.
3. The ship must cruise at a minimum of 18 knots and sprint at a maximum of 35 knots.

This process is typical of Questarian designs. The Navy Bureau is either split or is directly opposed to what the Senior Staff - made up of the Chief of Naval Staff, Chief of Naval Operations, and Supreme Chief of Staff Maritime, as well as the Navy Command Board. The Navy Bureau is usually backed by Parliament. In any case, the design of the ship was sent out to several shipyards for their draughting teams to compete for. Thirty six designs were sent in from five different draughing teams.

1. John Brown and Company
2. Kure Navy Yard
3. Harland and Wolff
4. Yarrow Shipbuilders
5. Norfolk Navy Yard

John Brown and Company came out on top, much to the chagrin of the Kure Navy Yard. John Brown and Company with a long history of making extremely efficient hulls and engines and where also known for their prominent role in armour design in many previous battleships. Though John Brown and Company would design the Valiant, many of the ships would be built in KNY and Yarrow yards, as John Brown and Co was notorious for consistent problems with quality control, especially in armour. While their design teams where excellent their naval production teams where sub par in comparison to other Questarian shipbuilders, though this still places them amongst the worlds top shipbuilders.

The propulsion system consisted of four geared turbines providing an extraordinary 525,000 SHP. This was due to several factors: Imperial Machinery's Geared Turbines were extremely efficient. The construction scheme of the ship with a curved hull that was flat and wide at the bottom meant that engine could be much larger than on traditional Questarian BBs where the construction methods where more geared towards a thicker and stronger armour belt and underwater protection that was based on sheer thickness as opposed to design construction. Furthermore the boilers were given more space because of the way the deck was constructed with the belt. In previous battleships the belt was seperate from the deck and was angled off a line of angled armour behind that acted to defend the hull from penetrations and also to support the construction. Designers insisted that a second, less angled belt was placed back this and then another belt behind it. This led to the Questarian BB being far tougher than other nations battleships because of the sheer structural integrity of the vessel, but it also meant that the boilers were cramped and often broke down.

However, in the Valiant, the belt was flush with the deck and this armour scheme was abandoned in favour of a thicker deck to protect from plunging fire, popup missiles, and heavy LGBs. The armour was designed around the boilers, much like a battlecruiser, and unlike other Questarian BBS where the armour was fuctional in holding the ship together, in the Valiant the belt consisted of a layer behind the hull that was angled upwards (which was also backed by a large armoured box that protected the boiler machinery) and a layer attached to the hull like in older battleships. The deck armour itself was made up of a single thick layer which didn't interfere with the machinery. All of these meant that the boilers and the general machinery where much larger and they were also (by design) much more efficient than previous models. To protect this machinery, the externally placed belt was tapered up to 26" from 23". Though it was flush with the deck it was angled at 18 degrees.

The underwater protection was significant. A second keel was standard and this was improved on by increasing the use of void spaces and structural supports (do not mistake for honeycombs, which have been out of IQN service for decades). In the event of the penetration of the first keel, the second was heavily tested and built to take the extreme pressure of a keel implosion. As per usual damage control was of a world-breaking standard and the WTCs were extremely well built. The funnels themselves are armoured and perforated armour was used so that a missile or bomb aimed down the funnel would not penetrate directly through. Furthermore the flooding and pumping in the ship was to an excellent standard and it was speculated a hit to the magazine would not be fatal if controlled in time, contrary to popular belief, such was the skill of the Questarian damage control crew, the construction of the magazines and barbettes, and the capability of the flooding. In addition bulkheads, internal bulges, and void spaces ran the length of the ship.

The hangar could hold 8 UAVs and 2 helicopters and did not extend down into the ship. The hangar floor was armoured and it met with the protection box for the boilers so that they would not receive damage if the hangar was destroyed. This, the thickness of the armour box, the number and strength of the WTCs, the flooding abilities, the damage control, and the void spacing meant that the machinery was almost inpenetrable. If the machinery was knocked out, it would mean the ship itself would probably be already knocked out of action. This armoured box and its assosciated protection systems ran around the shafts too and the rudders were protected by an armoured box. Furthermore an auxiliary rudder, housed ahead of the other rudders, was stored internally and could be deployed into the water if the other two where knocked out. The auxiliary rudder was weak but it would keep the ship moving or it could be used to stabilise a knocked out rudder.

The Block 1E Offensive Vertical Launch System was housed in a pair of 10x10 boxes that penetrated through the deck. These were surrounded by an armoured box that seperated them from the rest of the ship with advanced damage control systems in that were electronically linked to each cell. If there was a problem the cell would be flooded with foam and the missile launch automatically terminated. It was calculated that if the VL was hit by a 21" shell when half the missiles were expended then the explosion from the missile penetration would cause no damage to the ship whatsoever. Inbetween each cell foam and other protective systems filled the spaces and WTCs and thick bulkheads protected the ship from a VLS explosion. The bulkheads themselves were strong all over the ship and where made seperately - they were develoepd by the security company Imperial Security and Protection Group (ISPG) and were ordered en-masse to be fitted to the ships. Each draughting company paid ISPG to cooperate, and in any case the Navy Bureau standardised the size of such things anyway so there were no discrepencies or problems in design of these.

READ THIS [b]CAREFULLY IF YOU ARE WANTING TO PURCHASE
Different shipyards take orders. You can see here that each competes and each can service you. If you're on a tighter budget you may want a ship that is produced with lower quality control standards, Harland and Wolff for example. Each has their own 'speciality' in general but remember you can't order from the Questarian Government, or the Navy - neither own any construction shipyards. While there are many more shipyards in Questers these are the ones that have invested in the production rights (available internally only) to this particular ship and as such are the only that can build them.

The Armed Democratic Republic of Mekugi, sovereign of the Anchrish people and protector of the Commonwealth of Anchrish Stets hereby requests for purchase 33 vessels to be produced by John Brown & co. Naval yards, but request the main armament to be left bare in order to be later domestically fitted with M2013A 55 cm guns as reclaimed from refit Epion & to be scrapped Paragon Class vessels.

Should the results be satisfactory to the Naval command, a further order is pending however such a contract cannot be openly discussed before terms have been established. It is however public knowledge that the Paragon, and sub-class of Primogen class vessels are at the end of the reasonable service life and are fit for transfer or reclamation.

The amount in question shall be transfered immediately with a percentage bonus to be payed per hull upon reception and inspection at a local port.

The Confederate States Navy has been authorised to procure 868 billion dollars for the purchase of Valiant-class Battleships, we would therefore like to place an order for 28 vessels from John Brown and Co. We would like the vessels to be delivered without the single and twin 6" mountings, and with no guns in the 21" mountings, as these will be replaced with indigenous types.
