Bundesnachrichtendienst Headquarters,Pullach, West Germany

"Gentlemen, we have confirmation that Dieter Haff, an agent under the BND, has has been handing over secrets to the Stasi for several months. These secrets led to the execution of 3 East German soldiers who were collaborating with Central Intelligence and the death of William Patchins, a British agent working in the East Berlin office of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany, handling several persons operating in the party. Their condition is unknown. Now, Max and Karl here have been watching Dieter for the past 3 weeks and they've found that he meets with a possible KGB/Stasi operative IN West Berlin. So, I shall be accompanying the two of them to Berlin TONIGHT. There, we shall apprehend or render harmless Haff and his handler. Questions?" Michael Quinn turned to the American and German and other allied intelligence operators in the room. This had been the final topic in their agenda for the day and Michael really wanted to get out for a smoke. Seeing none he ordered "dismissed" The crowd slowly dispersed. That oddly reminded Quinn of the war and his part in it. It does not do well to dwell on the past, he thought to himself, it was time to grab his gear, his gun and hitch a ride to Berlin.

It was a cloudy day in Berlin. Police and soldiers patrolled the streets as construction work on various checkpoints, spanning to a long wall were underway. The flood of citizens leaving the eastern part of the city came as an alarm to the Soviet leadership. So, in an attempt to prevent such actions, authorization was given to block all access points to the west. News cameras poured imagery of people leaping from windows onto tarps in a desperate attempt to escape. All the while, east Berlin police struggling to hold onto them, some made it, some didn't. A number were shot dead trying to flee. The situation grew grimmer by the day as tensions rose. Alexi Krueger, a strong handsome man in his early thirties strode down the city streets of West Berlin. His short dark hair, clean shaven face and piercing blue eyes stared forward, occasionally looking around the surrounding area. He was briefed earlier that day about the meeting with a contact for the West Berlin intelligence service. This informant proved valuable in the past and led to several successful operations. The two met before, brief encounters, few words, and an exchange of envelopes and they were on their ways. However, Krueger kept an eye on the turncoat, never knowing wether or not he might turn on them. Caution was of upmost concern to him, every meeting was risky. Every possible scenario ran through his mind, a million what ifs. Krueger for the past few years worked as a liasion for the KGB, Krueger being a part of the Stasi, tehcnically. A veteran operative, he was cunning, methodical, and dedicated. His past was a closely kept secret, as was his name. The codename "Janus" was bestowed upon him. Everything about the Russo-German was a duality. After a brisk walk, Krueger rounded a corner and saw an outdoor cafe with tables and cahirs, thought the day was chilled and the wind too brisk for people to sit out and sip coffee. He instead went inside where there were few people. He approached the counter and ordered some coffee. Behind him, sat a beautiful woman with curly black hair who was submerged in a novel, seemingly lost in its' pages. Occasionally looking up to take in the scenary. They were only a foot away in the cramp coffee shoppe.
"What novel is that?" Krueger asked nonchalantly, his gaze fixed innocently on the woman.
"It's nothing you'd be interested in" she snapped back, shooting him down.
"Do you have the time then?" he asked, persistent.
"About 10:30" she sighed, rolling her beautiful eyes.
"Thank you ma'am, have a nice day" Krueger gave a quaint smile and departed the cafe, without a cup of coffee but did have the time of the exchange. It was in fact, 5:10 in the evening but the woman, a German contact gave him a different time, a more important time. krueger looked down at his watch. The time was set and so was the location. The team would be in place and ready to cover it well before that time. A grumble distracted him. He sighed and continued walking down the busy streets, past construction work near the divide of the city. Soviet and East German troops keeping a close watch while several American patrols drove past, eyes cautiously fixed on their counterparts.

just so u know, by this time, the Berlin Wall should have been built, just to be helpful

November 24th, 0955 Berlin

The airplane from Munich to West Berlin landed with a loud bump into the airport there. Out of the window, Michael noticed several American fighters. This was the former American sector, so of course they would be here. Michael, along with Max and Karl, grabbed their gear, marked: DIPLOMATIC and quickly were picked up in a company car. They rode in silence to a small safe house near the Berlin wall. This had been used by several East Germans who had snuck or bribed themselves through the Iron Curtain. Here, the men unpacked their gear. A sniper rifle, several pistols and knives, radios and binoculars. In German Michael said to his teammates "I'll take first watch, I'll wake Karl at midnight. Karl, you will stay on till three when you wake us all up. Supposedly, Dieter should be here around 4." The 2 German intelligence officers nodded and headed for the pathetic excuse for mattresses in the corner of the small apartment room. Companies money spent well, Quinn thought bitterly. He pulled a pack of cigarettes from his coat pocket, lit one and took a long thoughtful puff of it. He went over to the sniper rifle and slowly set it up. When he was done, he laid it and set it up on one of the windows looking out on the street. He pulled the rest of the weapons to him and began to clean and prepare the pistols and other equipment.

The night could best be described as bitter. Cold brisk wind gusts billowing down the streets, chilling all who still wandered outside. Krueger rubbed his hands together in a desperate attempt to bring some life back into them, but to no avail. Everyone was tense, rightfully so. These meetings were always full of tension and suspicion. He always got a gut feeling but tonight his stomach was especially knotted up. One cover operative positioned himself several yards down the streets, hidden in the shadows of a side street. The other, knelt behind several large barrels which were up against another wall. Krueger pulled his coat closer to his body and waited for the right time. Under his trench coat was a Mauser HSc, ready just in case.

A tall figure passed down a side alley, moving stealthily and quietly. He was calm, in controll of the situation and knew exactly what needed to be done. His chief ordered him to take care of the situation tonight. His superiors believed that the contact was spoiled and rationalized tat the time came to move on, having recieved perhaps too much information from the contact. He was skilled in his tradecraft and perfected it over many previous missions. Gray eyes fixated on a specific destination, a specific target.

Krueger waited just outside the light of a street lamp for Dieter to arrive...

"Michael...Michael vake up." The pushing against his shoulder continued, suddenly Michael shot up, pulling one of the pistols near him up and into the face of Karl. "What!?" he asked. "We have our targets sighted" Karl replied in German. Michael looked behind him to see Max looking out through the binoculars next to the sniper rifle. Michael stood and walked over to him. Taking the binoculars he did indeed see a lone figure standing in the street. Yards away, another figure headed toward him "Dieter" Michael said quietly. Max nodded. "Max, you have to base, set up the sniper and be ready if they run, only try to injure, no kill shot. Karl, pick up the pistols and an extra clip each, lets go." Michael grabbed his dark coat and headed for the stairs. When they got to the bottom, they loaded and cocked the pistols. He turned to Karl and continued with his German "Now, we wait till we can confirm that hes handing something over. When thats done with, we'll take them down. We can't kill them here, ok? We're too close to the border to worry about a gunfight. We'll hold them hostage till extraction ok? Good. We'll stay along the wall. Watch your shadow" He fixed his jacket one more time and exited the building, slowly moving along the wall of the apartment room, to get a visual on their subjects. Finally getting into position, Michael saw Dieter finally reach the communist agent.

Krueger looked out across the street as saw Dieter approaching, a nervous look drapped over his weary face. The agent waited for a long time...a very long time for Dieter to arrive, suspicion mounted. His eyes scanned across the area, the windows, the alleys, and every possible spot where someone could be hiding. Despite no obvious observations, krueger remained cautious as his contact approach. Finally, after several shaky steps, Dieter came close, but stayed out of the light.
"Good evening, Janus" Dieter started, nervously.
"Mr.Haff" Krueger returned, quick and to the point, voice stern.
"I have more information on the CIA's contacts in the Stasi"
"As always" Krueger quipped.

The tall figure rounded a sharp turn in an alley, hugging the wall in order to remain in the shadows. He finally set steel eyes upon the meeting, and his target. From his breast pocket he drew a Vis wz35 with a silencer adaption on the muzzle. Like a predator he moved in, quiet. The two men exchanged words, information and names. He raised the pistol and aimed in. Leather gloves wrapped around the grip. His finger pulled the trigger, two quick rounds fired off, hardly making a noise. Blood splattered against Krueger's face as he saw Dieter crumple to the ground, a round in his throat, spurting blood out and another round in his side. He hit the ground, struggling and grasping for air. Stunned, Krueger struggled to reach for his weapon.
"No comrade, I am a friend" the assasin preempted. His voice was assuring.

Michael swore under his breath as he saw the gun shots fly into Dieters back. "Damn, lets go Karl" he held his weapon out front and ran toward the 2 figures standing under the light, releasing the safety on his pistol, finger on the trigger, he shouted in english and german "You! Put your hands up! Put the gun down and place yourself on the ground! Now!" Karl and Michael spread toward the two men, placing themselves far enough away, for one to ensure the kill if the other was incapacitated. Tension filled the air as the lone figures turned to the noise

The man's voice was Russian and a deep baratone voice at that. He grabbed Krueger by his arm and pulled him heavily into the alley. Before he had a chance to ask a question, the man began dashing down the alley, moving easily around the obstacles. Krueger bolted after him, legs pumping in an attempt to keep up.

One cover operative pulled his pistol out and began to open fire on the approaching figure from the building, brass casings dancing in the air. The other, ran across the cobblestone street and fumbled for his weapon, unsure of who pulled Krueger into the shadows. He believed in his panicked mind that an enemy agent captured Krueger. The other fired once again and back tracked.

Krueger exhaled and inhaled deeply, eyes fixed on the man in front of him. The alley was dark and he nearly bashed into a trash can, but narrowly missed it and instead kicked an empty box up into the air.
"W-Who are you?!" Krueger demanded, panting.
"Dimitri Konovski, KGB!" Konovski replied in turn, voice begining to tire from the run.

"S***!!! Karl, get on the horn, get an..." Michael trailed off, viewing the lifeless body of Dieter Haff. "What about the others Michael?" asked Karl, who was covering the alleyway that the two communist agents had escaped down. "Contact command, tell them to get the Army to raise the threat level and secure the wall. They'll probably try to get out of the city. Get any of our men out as well. We can't let them get out....And get an ambulance to get the body and a car to pick us up."

After sprinting down the alley, out across another empty street and into another cramped alley, Konovski slowed his pace to a walk, then spun around and met Krueger's gaze. Both were panting heavily. A million questions raced through the agent's mind, the obvious one was who this Russian was.
"What the hell happened back there?!" Krueger demanded, running a hand through his dark hair as sweat rolled down his face.
"Dieter Haff was compromised, a liability and we had to take care of the situation." Konovski replied simply, almost nonchalantly.
"On who's athority?"
"The KGB's of course" Konovski's gaze went behind his friend's shoulder to keep an eye out.
"Why wasn't I informed?" Konovski asked, tone turning down a notch. "I was his handler and a liasion for the KGB."
"They wanted to keep this as low as possible. Quick and at the lowest level possible. If you were told, then that means more people would've been told. Your operations chief, team leader, etc. Too many loose thread left out in the wind. There was no other way."
"Now we have to get out of here. The Americans will be all over this area shortly and I don't know what happened to my two other guys."
"Yes, they may saturate this area with army patrols, perhaps even close down all the check points, that's an extreme there"
"Why is that extreme?" Krueger shot him a curious look.
"Because then their people would be trapped in the Soviet Sector. And we both know how their contacts and agents end up once we get a hold of them" Konovski answered "We must get back to safer ground" Krueger nodded and they briskly walked off. The other two agents tried to make their way back to East Berling in the meantime.

"Sir. HQ reports they shall have the Army send us more assistance, but the borders wont be able to be locked. 2 operations are being run to bring people over. They should be over in a half-hour, then the gates can be locked down. But, the guards will perform better searches of the people. And there'll have a company man at each station, to see with whatever pics we have of Dieters contact to register if any of the men are one of them." Michael turned to Karl, who with Max, had gathered all the equipment and were waiting for a ride to the CIA office in West Berlin. "Damn. We had better get them on the border or with the patrols. This is a disaster." Michael said wiping his brow. The CIA car and ambulance arrived and the men were transported to the office, while the body was headed for the morgue.

The two agents stuck to the shadows, avoiding the night hawks and patrols of German Police as well as the American army. Krueger was amazed by how calm and in control his Soviet counterpart appeared. His eyes never shaked, face never turned, completely in control. He moved methodically, every movement thought out witht he risks accessed, he never moved across a street or skirted a building without analyzing what he saw and sensed. Krueger, though a field agent, rarely did the real "wet work". Only one confirmed kill, his skill was not in assasination but gathering information, handling contacts and keeping them under the Statsi thumb. He also proved well at being a watcher. They stopped in an alley.
"Where from here?" Krueger asked, voice calmer than before. The Russian thought a moment.
"I have a contact, a man I worked with for the past ten years, one of the few men I trust. He doesn't supply information or anything, nothing directly involved. But, his door is always open to people like us...a sort of underground railroad" Konovski mused, a slight curl of the lips.
"Understood, how will we get out of the sector?"
"Well...we may not get out of the sector and into ours...but perhaps we can get out of the city and go from there." the Russian suggested.
"I have some people who can help us" Krueger nodded.
"Excellent, then we will proceed" the two of them lingered for a second or two then departed towards the safehouse.

"Damnit Damnit Damnit! Our patrols have found nothing. the Police have nothing! Sir, I must request you lock down the city and call the full military forces here out. This man may have a huge knowledge of us or the Russians. His savior may have even more" Michael demanded. He was standing in a high-tech headquarters of the CIA branch in Berlin, that was housed with their German counterparts, and with DIA. "Agent Quinn, as much as he may know, he cannot be worth it to go into full blown containment. You don't even know where he is. He could already be over the wall, or out of the city some other way. Plus, if we do this, it will certainly give the East Germans and Russians knowledge that we are doing something strange, and they may overreact. NO! We will not going crazy over one man, Michael. Besides, I just got a call from Washington, your getting a new assignment. Sounds pretty big." the CIA Chief finished, nonchalantly

"But sir.." Michael began
"No Quinn, its over. You are to start packing now and get on the first plane out today, from their you'll go to Paris, then to DC....Go Quinn" the Chief said, pointing towards the door. Michael grabbed his coat and hat and walked out the door.

It was early in the morning when the tw finally mae it to the house of Johannes Gruppe, a secret communist sympathizer and a contact for the KGB. He was an older gentleman, late forties and seemingly harmless, a respected member of the community and the owner of a tailor shoppe. He walked with a cane, a reminder of the war and the barrage of airborn bombs from American planes. Konovski went over a wooden fence and up to the back door, he had a fenced in garden, quaint but something to keep him busy.
"Dimitri, it's been too long" Gruppe commented with a smile as he saw his Russian friend.
"Truly, I apoligize for such an early arrival, but we need a place to lay low." Konovski replied, outstretching his arm and giving a firm hand shake. Gruppe shook away the remaining vestiges of sleep from his eyes and allowed them in.
"What happened?" Gruppe asked as he sat down in the kitchen.
"A liability had to be dealt with but the Americans were watching." Konovski said. "I'm sorry, this is Alexi Krueger, a friend." Krueger nodded.
"It's not safe to travel today, the sun's almost up and they'll be on high alert" Gruppe stated. "Perhaps tomorrow night?"
"No, we'll have to travel today...it's important that we get back" Krueger chimmed in. "Before Haff died, I learned something important"
"What's that?" Konovski asked, the first break in his neutral face apparent.
"Not here, we'll discuss it some other time".

The three men sat there for a while longer, talking about nothing important. Mainly Gruppe and Konovski catching up on old times. Finally, Kruger fell asleep on a couch in the parlor, Konovski; however, did not sleep at all.

November 25th, 0900 Hours Paris International Airport

Michael Quinn walked down the empty ,but still containing some resemblance of a life, hallways of the Paris Airport, named after Charles De Gaulle, the famous French army leader in World War 2. Michael had a flight in little over a half-hour and was walking to where he would be boarding his plane, when down the way, a door for airport staff opened and two men in suits walked out and headed straight for Michael Awww man Michael began to move for his small revolver in his pocket when the men spoke "Mr Quinn? Yes, we work for your boss, he's asked us to instead take you to your meeting instead." one of the men said. They were both tall, both wearing dark suits, one gray one blacking-blue. Michael pondered this in silence, then remembered the password for CIA operatives when they asked for clarification. "Did he buy the tickets or will I have to buy my own?" Michael asked slowly. The two men looked at each other, then the first speaker said "No, every thing's taken care of." He had answered correctly. Michael motioned for them to lead the way and was led OUT of the airport.

DGSE Office, Paris, France
Michael, after a short ride through town to a large building in Paris, was escorted inside to a conference room and saw 2 men standing together.

"Welcome Mr. Quinn, My name is Reginald Clancy, I am assistant regional director of Eastern Europe. This is Francois Boudreax. He is my counterpart. We have brought you here to send you to Berlin, Mr. Quinn" Clancy said smiling.

"...sir?" Michael stuttered out after an awkward silence.

"Michael, I, and so does my counterpart here, think that there is a leak in our agency in Berlin. I doubt it is the CIA side, but we can't rule out the German Intel Service. So, we called you out, so that no one would know what your true mission would be" the CIA DepDir of East Europe said excitedly. The middle-aged man was enjoying this way to much in Michaels opinion

"And that is sir?" Michael asked

"We want you to be an...inspector I guess you could say. I want you to go back to Berlin on the premise of a false mission and actually conduct surveillance on suspected German moles. While your there, agents, of several NATO nations, here will pour over documents of non-German agents, to see if we can find any dirt on them." he replied

Michael considered this. It was a gamble, sending him in to watch other agents with not letting anyone know what he was really doing could really be treading some turf of the Berlin Intelligence community. He had personally seen the CIA station chief chew an agent from MI6 out for him not telling the CIA what he was doing there making contacts with some of the Berlin underworld

"Sir, your sending me in with out any note to the station chief?" The Director nodded

Michael pondered this, then said "whats my mission?"

The two agents daringly made there way into East Berlin, Gruppe had friends on both sides as well as the West German Army who let his car through a check point. Gruppe had a pass, which took some time getting due to the American's hovering presence when he applied for one. His tailor business was a well known one and he had several clients in East Berlin. So, the two traveled as new tailors and nervously sat in the car as it passed through the check point back into the safety of the Soviet Zone. The two parted ways with Gruppe once they crossed the boundary and Krueger had much to report on.

Later that day he met with his operations chief who was less than thrilled with what te KGB did but understood their discretion. AFter a lengthy briefing Krueger was dismissed and Konovski disappeared without any parting words to his Stasi counterpart.

Michael too went through a long briefing with several analysts and cover agents who had been on the other side of the wall and had been smuggled through. These briefings basicly explained who the targets were. In the end he was also told that he would have 2 men, one british the other American, and the 3 would be observing the German agents. After getting their gear, they headed for a military airplane headed for Berlin

After Id'ing all their targets, they began their major stakeouts.
