Revolution in Antarctica (open role-play)

Subantarctic Islands

Within the mountain ranges of South Georgia the illicit votes where being counted. By some miracle the ballot had been kept secret from the Antarctic Government, by a further miracle the combined votes of South Georgia, South Sandwich, Herd Island, Mcdonald Isles, Kerguelen, The Crozets, Amsterdam and St Paul had been brought together safely here in the dead of night during the typical blizzard of the Arctic seas. A star penned on the blank sheet signaled a vote for independence, a cross for remaining with the United Continent of Antarctica. The stars were by far the majority signal tonight.

Arthur Donahue, instigator of the vote and champion of the cause for independence, considered the result. How would this collection of tiny, almost insignificant breaks in the Southern Oceans, hundreds of miles apart, form successful government, economy, defence??? More importantly how would the sleeping giant of the mainland react to the breaking news that these Islands were now about to declare themselves a new Confederacy, breaking themselves from the motherland? The results of the vote where convayed throughout the Islands, the pre-planned orders from Donahue were put into action.

Flags were lowered throughout the Islands, and the new, simple blue flag with single white star was raised. From Grytviken the communique declaring formation of the Confederacy of Subantarctic Islands was passed to the Antarctic Government, no response was recieved. Reports came from South Sandwich, only site of any Antarctic military, that all remained still. The new regime began establishment throughout the Confederacy without resistance from the Continent. This did not make Donahue confident. He ordered word to be sent to the international community, help to be sought from any willing source. The Confederacy must not die before it has begun.

Kanami will sell you weapons and supplies, and will be air dropping food and supplies for your civilians. Because you are still young we will be kind and slash the prices of most weaponry.

For $150,000,000 you can buy a military package of weapons and munitions of AK-47's as well as most needed medical supplies and two tanks. This is a multi billion dollar value. This is from the Government, most private arms contracters may be more pricey.

We are alarmed by this intrusion into what seemed to be a peaceful territory. We have several colonies and laboratory facilities on Antarctica and we will do everything in our power to protect them from intrusion of any government.

OOC: You are taking over Antarctica correct?

The Confederacy of Subantarctic Islands has made no incursion onto the Antarctic mainland and we certainly do not wish to make a hostile takeover of these lands. The populace consisting of the Subantarctic Islands, i.e. South Georgia, South Sandwich Isles, Herd Island, Mcdonald Isles, Kerguelen, The Crozets, Amsterdam and St Paul make up the Confederacy as is their democratic right to elect to do so, but let us be clear that we do not hold any claim to the Antarctic mainland, which currently is under the soverignty of the United Continent of Antarctica government (OOC: No, really, it's a registered nation that in keeping with the title of this new nation we elect to pick a fight with :) )

For $150,000,000 you can buy a military package of weapons and munitions of AK-47's as well as most needed medical supplies and two tanks.

The Confederacy welcomes your proposal and accepts the terms supplied. The monies must be wired from Grytviken, as you can imagine our remote location means this may take some time but should conclude within 24 hours none the less.

Communique: Grytviken, South Georgia.

Thanks to all whom have offered support to our cause for freedom. We are pleased to report that thus far the United Continent of Antarctica does not appear to be challenging our claim to soverignty and so this may yet turn out to be a bloodless revolution.

To the esteemed leaders of Droskianishk:

We thanks you for your offer of military advisiory staff. Such support would be welcome whilst we establish a strong military. Your assistance in helping us face the challenge of providing military protection to such a widespread group of isolated islands is much appreciated. We welcome any ambassador you wish to send here to Grytviken, however at this time we must ask that you pay for your own building costs as we are somewhat short of supplies temporarily.

To the esteemed leaders of FreDemGov:

We also extend our thanks to you for your support. Again we welcome your diplomatic representation here with open arms, yet again we ask you kindly to incur your own costs for establishing a residence here at Grytviken. We have dispatched an ambassador of our own to you and he should arrive soon depending on the state of the Antarctic ice-flows on the way.

In terms of supplies we would be grateful to purchase building supplies and medicines of various sorts.

Prime Minister David Flower boarded International One, the Boeing 757 of the New Brittonian Government, to meet with the new government of the Sub-Antarctic Islands. Officially this flight was to establish diplomatic relations, but Mr. Flower knew his real reasons for coming to these islands.

“International One, you are clear for takeoff.”, the air traffic controller said as David Flower hoped a new age in democratic communism will begin.

The response to the decleration of independence had as yet met no resistance. The Islands went about their daily buisiness undisturbed. Donahue formed his government in Grytviken, appointed both the cabinet and Commissioners for each island of the confederacy. The flag kept flying throughout the Confederacy, the Arctic mainland remained still.

The simple building that was Government House prepared for the anticipated visit of Prime Minister Flower of New Brittonia. Donahue couldn't quite convince himself of why the New Brittonians were taking such active interest in this young nation, but what he did know was that, for now at least, he couldn't turn away any friendly nations, there was too much at stake and the Confederacy was in no position to go it alone.

News arrived of International One's approach to South Georgia, President Donahue made haste to the airport. Luckily the blizzard typical to these harsh lands had held off, perhaps fate wanted this meeting to take place?

Prime Minister Flower began to walk out of International One, it was almost freezing outside. Okay, it WAS freezing outside, and he could not understand how Arthur Donahue, standing outside of the runway, could seem to tolerate the temperature. Well, he thought, some must have to be born to tolerate the cold. Because Mr. Flower could not. As he began to approach Arthur Donahue, Prime Minister David Flower greeted him like so,
“Man, it‘s cold out here. Isn‘t it?”

As C-130 after C-130 began to land on a small airfield in the Confederacy, pilot Captain Kornek of the Droskianishk Air Legion continued his lively debate and argument with the air control tower, "No dammit, we're the Droskianishk military advisors.." Captain Kornek thought that all this would be worked out but apparently many of the air controllers had not realized the scope of a military advisee operation, 1,000 Droskianishk troopers was alot and the logistics and support needed to deploy those troops was alot too. Kornek only hoped that the Republican Fleet wouldn't suffer such headaches when it arrived to unload helicopters, a few tanks, a shit load of ammo, and some damnable Ambassador that no one could stand named Almono.

The Droskianishk Republican Fleet (DRF) would arrive several days latter escorting private Jonescorp freighters which would begin construction on the Droskianishk Embassy....

Prime Minister David Flower saw the C-130's land in the airfield as he stood out of International One and thought he was being kidnapped

He raised his hands in the air and yelled,
"I am the Prime Minister of New Brittonia and would like to invoke the right of parley!!!"
Droskianishk
10-04-2007, 01:24
Captain Kornek could see suited men all long the airfield... "shit no wonder the controllers were pissed" he chuckled as he saw one man raise his hands.... the Captain waved hoping the suited man would see him and relax.

The Prime Minister saw the military man and was very nervous,

"Sir. . . sir. Please do not kill me. I have a family and a country, I am just going to talk with the leader of this new country. Please, don't shoot, tour hundreds out number my 6 guards. I'll give you nything you want. . . just don't kill me."

10-04-2007, 01:33
" What?" asked Captain Kornek, "Hell sir, we aren't here to kill you, we're part of the Republic of Droskianishk's military advisor group here to help train up the Subantartic military, Captain Kornek of the Droskianishk Air Legion and you are?" Kornek continued extending his hand to the gentleman as the last of the C-130's landed in the background.

Prime Minister Flower was relieved, very relieved.

"Well, I am Prime Minister David Flower of New Brittonia, sir. I am here to meet with Donahue to congratulate him on his new nation and to establish diplomatic relations. But I guess he is a bit late, oh well."

Donahue and the "Welcoming comittee" arrived at the airstrip just in time to meet what appeared to be utter chaos. What he at first feared to be an invasion force of the United Continent of Antarctica was soon confirmed to be the Droskianishk assistance he requested,

"Hell they don't do things in half measures that lot!" he exclaimed to the nervous private of the Confederacy Guard passing the news. "Where the hell is that Prime Minister I'm after?"

The private pointed him in the direction of a smart suited man talking with what looked like the head honcho of the Droskianishk contingent. The PM was pretty obviously as nervous about what was going on as the tiny and vastly outnumbered Confederacy Guardsmen hoplessly running around attempting to make some show of authority and organisation. The poor guy obviously didn't expect to get caught up in all this. Hell, Donahue himself wasn't expecting to arrive to this!

"Listen!" Donahue addressed the private, "You get to your CO and tell him to report to me at Government House when he's finished here so he can explain to me why the airstrip wasn't prepared for this and why the hell he's left Prime Minister Flower standing with his ass hanging out in the cold. And for Christ's sake man try to compose yourself like a Confederacy Guard!" The private hastilly saluted Donahue and scurried off.

Donahue turned to David Brimmer, Secretary for Diplomatic Affairs, "Change of plan, you stay here to meet with the Droskianishk representation and help them get settled in, I'll travel with PM Flower to Government House". Brimmer nodded silently.

Donahue strolled calmly accross the tarmac towards the PM, extending his hand cordially,

"Prime Minister Flower I presume. Sorry you beat me hear sir, but the road here from Grytviken sure is a bitch if you don't mind me saying so?"

"It's all right, it's all right", Prime Minister Flower said, "The wait was errr. . . interesting at the very least. Please tell that the general guy has a free night in the Parker Beadroom at the Prime Minister's Mansion."

Mr. Flower pulled out a cigar and lit it and then asked Donahue,

"Want one?"
Subantarctic Islands
10-04-2007, 02:34
"Thanks, don't mind if I do"

Donahue accepted the cigar Flower offered and gestered to the waiting transports,

"Perhaps we should head to somewhere a tad more comfortable Prime Minister, sorry we have to go by jeep but they're about the only thing to get through the roads here. We should arrive at Government House within a half hour"
New_Brittonia
10-04-2007, 02:40
"Well then, a jeep it is then. Let's go!", Mr. Flower said as he was ready to see the new government of the Antarctic islands.

"You do have enough vehicles for my guards, right?", Mr. Flower asked.

"Of course, I had an extra couple brought along"

The convoy finally set way towards the national capital Grytviken. The road wound through the mountains towards the sheltered bay. Finally, just as night was falling, they pulled up outside Government House, official residence of President Donahue, as well as seat of government for the Confederacy. The usual official welcome ensued, the Anthems of both nations where played as Donahue led Flower down the red carpet and eventually into the Presidential Offices. One of the servant staff closed the door behind the two leaders and Donahue led Flower to a couple of chairs beside the fireplace.

"Well we finally made it hear Prime Minister. I have to say I'm not much for all the official pomp and pagentry that comes with these occassions. You shall get a chance to meet my cabinet at dinner this evening if you care to join us, and of course you shall be provided the guest suite here for the duration of your stay. In the meantime, how about a Scotch and we can get down to some talk?"

Donahue knew exactly what talk he had in mind and also knew just how risky raising this issue would be......
New_Brittonia
10-04-2007, 03:06
"Thank you", Mr Flower said as he drank the Scotch, "First I must congratulate you on the success of your government. It is difficult to achieve a revolution, it must seem. I would first announce that I would like to establish diplomatic relations between both nations, this would strengthen our diplomatic relations withone another."
David Flower said this, getting the formalities out of the way.
Subantarctic Islands
10-04-2007, 03:17
"I thank you for your show of support and welcome your offer of establishing formal relations. I confirm that too is our wish and indeed hope this may be the beginning of a strong partnership between our two nations."

Donahue downed the scotch in one and re-filled both glasses and considered his next words carefully.

"If I may be so bold Prime Minister, I'm sure you didn't travel all the way here to the back of beyond to simply establish routine diplomacy. I'm sure you will also have guessed by now from what you witnessed at the airport that perhaps that wasn't our only intention either?"
New_Brittonia
10-04-2007, 03:22
"Okay", Prime Minister Flower said, "every time I say this to a person from a foreign country they get all nervous and have their fears take over and they do not listen to rational thought, so let me start you out with the following two sentences.
I am a Communist.
New Brittonia is a Communist democracy."
Subantarctic Islands
10-04-2007, 03:32
Donahue was somewhat taken aback by Flowers response. Hell he didn't look like a communist, not that he was sure what a communist looked like.

"Hmm, Communist you say, well I must say Prime Minister you are full of surprises, and a Communist democracy you say? Hmm, one can't help but wonder why this would bring your interests here."

Donahue considered this. Perhaps it wouldn't be an issue, perhaps Flower could still be persuaded into joining the as yet unspoken plan.

10-04-2007, 03:39
"Well, you know how Sweden and Norway are? We're like that. New Brittonia elected the Communist party into power 50 years ago and no one has been sent to Siberia, or whatever the Ole Soviet Onion did.", the Prime Minister explained, "We never had a dictatorial phase. We did have a gay phase, it was the 80s and the Brittonians elected a gay guy, Thomas Barkley. . . I'm getting off topic, sorry. Well, I went here to help spread the message of Democratic Communism. So yeah."
