History

With growing tensions between Europe and Mexico, President Benito Juárez's suspended the payments of interest on loans to foreign on 17th of July, 1861. This had which angered Spain, France and Britain. The three countries signed the Treaty of London on 31st of October, to unite their efforts to receive payments from Mexico. With Spain's Caribbean Fleet anchored in Spanish Cuba, Spanish troops were the earliest to see action on December 8th, 1861 and the Gulf port of Veracruz. Despite the Republican's efforts to hold off the Spanish, the Republican defenders were eventually overwhelmed by the Spanish forces, forcing them to retreat inland. The British and French fleets had arrived at the city of Campeche later during the month. Republican defenders had defended the city for 2 months before their eventually succumbing to overwhelming forces. With the coastal areas of Mexico under the control of the allied countries, they began their march towards Mexico City.

The allied troops under the command of the French entered Mexico City on the 7th of June 1863. With the United States preoccupied in their Civil War, and was in no shape to enforce their Monroe Doctrine, the allied nations met on 21st of June, and proclaimed the creation of the Second Mexican Empire on 10 July in hopes of bringing a European influence into the Americas once more. The crown was offered to an French Royal named Maximilian. Maximilian accepted the crown on 3rd of October.

The Republic had faced many setbacks during their resistance againts the new Empire. With the disastor at Sinaloa, Rio Grande and Chihuahua the morale of the Republican rebels was low. The Battle of Camarón proved to be the eventual downfall of the Mexican Republic. Despite being a Republic victory, it had cost the Republicans with more then 300 Republic soldiers, including the death of most of the Republic's experienced senior officers, including General Milan. The final blow to the republic was the Battle of Puebla, in which most of the Republic soldiers were either killed of captured. After that defeat, many of the former Republic leaders who had not been captured had either escaped to the United States or the Central American Republic. The remaining Mexican resistances had ended by 1868.

Emperor Maximilian I had begun to establish laws that abolished child labor, limited working hours, and abolished a system of land tenancy that virtually amounted to serfdom among the Indians. Much of these reforms proved to be unpopular with the conservatives of the country. The Emperor proved to be unpopular with the liberals of Mexico as well. Despite these liberal reforms, the liberals of the country still could not stand the idea of life under an Emperor.

By the 1896, the Empire was in turmoil. This had led to the Mexican Civil War. The Seperatist however were crushed by Royalist forces with the next 4 years. However, Emperor Leonardo III the Fair had signed the Great Charter of Equality in hopes that future conflicts within the Empire can be avoided. Initially, he intended to share his powers with a democratically elected congress, however by 1921, with much democratic reforms and the signing of the Imperial Charter (the Charter of Equality was merged with the Imperial Charter), the Empire had became constitutional monarchy.

During the Great Depression, the Mexican Empire was near economic collaspe. However with the Second World War, many jobs were created through the military, industrial and the agricultural industry. During the next four decades, the Empire had experienced impressive economic growth, and historians call this period "El Milagro Mexicano", the Mexican Miracle. The assumption of mineral rights and subsequent nationalisation of the oil industry into Pemex proved to be a popular move.

This economic boom however had not spread to the Empire's southern neighbour, the Federal Republic of Central America. During the 1960s', much of the FRCA had been ravaged by Civil War. By the 70s', the FRCA government was near economic collapse after a decade of quelling the insurgents. With that, the Mexican Empire and the Central American Republic had met to discuss possible economic relief from the Empire. What resulted from these meetings instead was the building blocks of a future united nation. In 1980, both the Empire and the FRCA held a referendum on the same day to see whether or not they favoured a union between the two nations. By a vote of 72% in Mexico and a ovrwhelming 93% in FRCA in favour of a union, the Greater Mexican Empire was born on January 1st, 1981. By the late 80s' however, there was huge pressure from the populance to change the name of the country and so the Central American Empire was chosen as the new name of the nation by 1991.

The Central American Empire is currently opening diplomatic relations with any nation in the world in hopes of gaining potential allies and trade partners.
