The ISS Constellation NCC-25 was an elderly Constitution class cruiser. She didn't show her age though as she had recently undergone a major refit to her 40 year old hull.

The vessel was under the command of Commodore Matt Decker and was on a 2 year long expedition to explore the regions surrounding the Galactic Core.

The vessel was only a few light years from the center of the Milky Way galaxy. She had been exploring this region for the past 16 months and was almost at the point where she would be returning to Primus.

The voyage wasn't full of excitement as they hadn't encountered any hostilities. That was well and good for Decker and his crew. They weren't warriors, they were explorers.

The vessel's sensors had picked up a large mobile energy reading from the Delta Quadrant. The energy output from the object was certainly large. It was still 10 LY away, but the sensors were picking up the output without an issue.

After consulting with Starfleet Command, the Commodore was ordered into the nearby Delta Quadrant to investigate the object.

Decker ordered his vessel to warp factor 9 to intercept the object. He was really straining his engines, but the amount of energy emmitted by the object led to Starfleet ordering him to quickly intercept it.

It had taken a day and a half , but the Constellation was now nearing the object.

Decker ordered his ship to impulse. The object was now on his viewer.

"Oh my God," he muttered. The object appeared on his viewer as a large blue cloud.

"Shall we enter the cloud?" asked the helmsman as he kept the ship on a steady course.

"Go ahead slowly," ordered Decker. "Science Station, are you getting any passive signals from the vessel?"

"Negative Captain," responded the Science Officer. "I am reading immense energy readings from the object. The power output readings are up to the 12th power. I don't know what is generating this cloud or if there is anything within it. I'd like permission to begin scanning the object."

"Permission granted, begin scans at your discretion," said Decker. He admitted he wanted to know more about what this object was.

"I'm reading an object within this cloud," stated the Science Officer. "Scanners show the cloud has a diameter of over 2 atmospheric units. It is my hypothesis that the object within the cloud is generating the power we are reading and the power is creating this cloud."

"Damn," remarked Decker as he computed the diameter of the cloud to be over 300,000,000 km.

"Hold on," remarked the Science Officer. "I'm getting new readings from within the cloud. There is an energy buildup!" The officer adjusted some switches before reporting again. "They are reading our scans as an offensive act! An energy discharge was just emitted from the object! It's coming for us."

"Red alert! Shields up" ordered Decker. "Helm, take evasive maneuvers."

The object within the cloud scanned the Constellation. The energy output of the scan was immense as it overloaded circuits causing sparks to fly out of overloaded systems and panels on the bridge of the elderly starship.

"Sir, I'm getting the energy output on the viewer!" stated the Science Officer.

"Onscreen," ordered Decker as his ship had now completed her sharp turn to starboard. The object was a large blue ball of energy emitted from the cloud.

The Connie was running at full impulse, but the object was gaining on them.

The TAO had locked rear phaser banks on the object. Decker ordered the Connie to fire. Two phaser bursts shot out from the emitters above the shuttlebay. The shots were absorbed by the blue energy ball and had no effect on it.

"15 seconds to collision," stated the science officer.

"Helm, put all auxiliary power on the impulse drive," ordered Decker. It made no use as the object kept on closing in on the vessel. "Hard to port, keep up evasive maneuvers. Let our port banks try to open fire on the object."

All of these orders were carried out. Once the port phaser banks fired, they had no effect as the earlier case was. The Connie went to starboard to continue her attempts to flee.

"5 seconds to impact, 4, 3, 2, 1"

The blue energy ball struck the rear of the vessel. Extra power was diverted to the shields at the last minute. It didn't matter. The energy was just too strong.

The first effect of the shot was the overloading and failure of all electrical systems on the ship.

Outside of the vessel, it appeared as if the blue energy ball engulfed the vessel. The vessel was absorbed by the blue energy. Once the entire vessel was engulfed, she disappeared. There was no trace of the Constellation or her 430 crewmembers.

Starfleet Headquarters, Primus III

The disappearance of the Constellation hadn't gone unnoticed. Starfleet had gotten a transmission sent from the vessel during the battle. There were now reports of other vessels from other governments being lost to this mysterious cloud.

In an even more disturbing discovery, the path of the cloud was going to bring it directly to Primus III. The population of the planet was in danger of extinction if something wasn't done.

Above the capitol, a shuttlecraft descended towards Starfleet HQ. The vessel make a perfect landing. The door opened and out stepped the vessel's primary passenger, Fleet Captain James Tiberius Kirk.

Kirk was no longer officially in command of the Enterprise. His old vessel was finishing up a 24 month refit following her 5 year mission to explore the Beta Quadrant. Ever since that 5 year mission, Kirk had been assigned as the Commodore for a squadron of 5 cruisers.

He had arrived at the HQ for a meeting with Admiral Leyton. The meeting went quickly and at the conclusion of the meeting he was reinstated as the Commanding Officer of the ISS Enterprise.

Kirk had learned that she would need a few more days before she would be 100%. After all, they hadn't even had the opportunity for a shakedown cruise. The Enterprise hadn't moved from her drydock at San Francisco Shipyards in over 2 years.

Kirk was beamed to an orbital office structure because Scotty had informed him the transporters on his ship weren't ready.

He and Scotty boarded a shuttlepod. Scotty was unaware that Kirk had been reinstated as CO. Commander Willard Decker had been slated to command the vessel during her refit and post-refit periods.

"They gave her back to me Scotty," remarked Kirk once the shuttlepod undocked. "I need you to get her out in 12 hours."

"But Sir!" remarked Scotty. "We won't be ready for at least 48 and she hasn't had a proper shakedown."

"Mr. Scott, that cloud is only a week from Primus III," responded Kirk. "Ready or not, she launches in 12 hours."

Scotty began to mutter to himself. "The crew hasn't had near enough transition time with the new equipment. And the engines haven't been tested at warp power. And you're untried Captain."

"Two and a half years out of space may be a while, but I'm hardly untried Scotty," responded Kirk.

"She'll be ready sir," remarked the Scotsman.

The shuttle continued towards the drydock, which now dominated the viewer screen. Kirk hadn't even seen his vessel in almost 30 months. She didn't look like the Enterprise he took out for a 5 year mission.

The first thing he noticed was the change of her warp drive. The cylindrical nacelles with red tips were gone. They were replaced by slimmer nacelles on pylons that were now swept back.

Her saucer section looked very different. It was set upon a new mount, which was now swept forward. At the base of the mount stood a dual tubed torpedo launcher.

Her sensor array had been moved away from her navigational deflector. The sensors were now internally mounted within the extended and enlarged saucer section. The formerly red navigational deflector which extended out of the hull was now nearly completely contained within the engineering hull. It was currently colored orange, but it would be blue when powered up while the ship was underway.

Kirk looked in awe at his ship. Scotty knew to say nothing and just spend 15 minutes bringing Kirk around the ship in the shuttlepod so he could marvel at how beautiful his ship now looked. She didn't resemble the shape of the original configuration Constitution class starships anymore. She appeared as if she was a brand new ship. That was quite an achievement for the refit given the fact the vessel was almost 30 years old and looked ready for the scrappers when she concluded her 5 year mission.

As the pod flew over the saucer section, Kirk saw in black writting on the duranium hull ISS ENTERPRISE NCC-1701. When Kirk commanded her, she was designated NCC-22. Starfleet had recently redone their numbering system for vessels. As a result, the registry number of the Enterprise had been changed to 1701.

The pod came around to the port side of the neck. It docked at a docking port attached to the torpedo structure. Kirk was home.
