EMPEROR BRINGS BACK THE PARLIAMENT
Calls for a "return to democracy"
Emperor Paulus began the week with his resignation from the Sovereign League, and today he announced that there will be elections for an empire-wide Parliament. Since he dismissed the Parliament some two years ago, Paulus has had the duties of both executive and legislative powers - he set up the regional parliaments to deal with regional issues, however, he still formed the basis of Whyatican domestic and foreign policy on his own. Much of the population is supportive of the Emperor, however, there have been many cries for the Emperor to reestablish the Imperial Parliament, calling the current system undemocratic.

Paulus has announced that the new Parliament will have a structure largely the same as the old one, however, the Prime Minister will have a far tighter leash put on him by the Emperor and by the Parliament regarding the use of military force. Paulus stated "I will not let history repeat itself," regarding the new Parliament and seeks that this one shall remain permanent.

Immediately following the announcement, the Liberal Party announced it's candidate for the Prime Ministership, a Mr. Louis Prima. The Liberal Party, in it's own press release, confirmed it's wishes for "The continuation of laissez-faire economic policy and the sovereignty of the individual." They are widely popular amongst Whyaticans, with an expected 41% of the vote to be captured in the election.

The other major parties have not announced their candidates for Prime Minister, however, the Social Democrat and the Conservative parties are expected to announce later this week.

MARGIN OF ERROR: +-3%
Liberal Party: Continued support of the Emperor's reforms. Laissez-faire economic policy, 'sovereignty of the individual'. Expected vote: 41%

Social Democrats: Opposition of the Emperor's reforms. Believe in more tightly controlled economy and higher amounts of social welfare than currently provided under the current system. Expected vote: 29%

Conservatives: Opposition of essentially everything except the laissez-faire economy. Expected vote: 19%.

Anarchist Party: Where all the cool kids who think they're anti-establishment hang out, in order to gain a position of power in the establishment. The few that know what "anarchism" is believe in the complete dismantling of the establishment and happy times will occur afterwards. Nobody is sure how much of the vote these nuts will get because of the kids who vote for them and think they're cool.

OOC: lol at the anarchists

IC:
Errikland is pleased to see a republican shift in a formerly autocratic area of the world, and congratulates the Whyatican people on this change.

At this point, we would support the Liberal Party, though the Conservative party is a relatively close second. Economic freedom is the cornerstone of personal freedom, and the rights of the individual are central to the maintainence of true freedom, as history has shown that a de jure emphasis on the community at the expense of the individual quickly becomes an emphasis on the state at the expense of all.

Good luck with your future republic.

Dzanjiru-born Whyatican small businessman J. Q. Jones has donated $2,000 to the Anarchist Party; while this was expected to be used to further their campaign, it was recently discovered that the Anarchists actually spent this on drugs, booze, and hookers. However, the Anarchist Party has emerged with a new slogan, promising (among other things) that under Anarchist rule everyone will get free drugs, booze, and hookers. The Anarchists have been preaching this mantra on street corners, as they can't afford proper campaign ads, so it's unknown exactly how effective or widespread this message will be.

Liberal Party Wins Majority, Forms Government
As the computerized votes flooded into the central tallying hubs, the results became more and more clear to everyone - the Liberal Party had won a clear majority of Parliament. This was not a surprise to anyone, except perhaps the people taking the exit polls - prankster voters tended to answer that they had voted for the Anarchist Party, and the exit polls showed 33% Liberal, 29% Social Democrat, 11% Conservative, and a whopping 25% Anarchist, which made many suspect that the exit polls were incorrect.

The real results were:
53% Liberal Party (MAJORITY GOVERNMENT: PM Louis Prima)
38% Social Democrat Party (OPPOSITION PARTY)
8.9% Conservative Party
0.1% Anarchist Party

When the Parliament convenes for the first time this Thursday, one of the first votes rumoured to be on the agenda is the rejoining of the Whyatican Empire to the Sovereign League. Prime Minister Prima has not commented on the issue as of yet, as the Sovereign League was not a large issue during the campaigning. It is rumoured, though, that the Prime Minister opposes the Whyatican Empire rejoining the League and will do whatever he can to prevent it.

Whyatican Parliament Rejects Sovereign League
This latest Parliament showed itself to be quite the decisive one - a landslide vote against rejoining the Sovereign League, with a 119-231 vote. The Liberal Party led the anti-Sovereign League coalition, with it's massive weight of votes essentially ensuring the rejection of the bill that would bring the Empire back into the Sovereign League. The Social Democrat Party and the Conservative Party were both in favour of rejoining the Sovereign League, which seemed odd for the Conservatives given that they seem to be against everything. The four Anarchist MPs voted with the Liberal bloc, namely because they're against government and international organization of any kind.

Prime Minister Louis Prima noted that he was "pleased with the way the vote came out", and he continued, "Whyatica's future looks ever brighter now."

The Emperor was unavailable for comment on this issue.

Official Announcement from the Free Havenic Republic of Kahanistan
Ministry of Foreign Affairs

While the Government of Kahanistan supports the restoration of the Imperial Parliament in principle and is neutral with regard to the Sovereign League in general, we feel compelled to support the Social Democratic party at this time.

We feel that the way a society treats its least fortunate citizens, not the degree of economic freedom, is the means by which to judge a nation. To cite an extreme example, Doomingsland and Automagfreek provide very high degrees of economic freedom, but minimal personal and political rights.

Further, we see no reason why the Prime Minister needs a tight leash from the Emperor. While one may think we would support the idea given the hostility of the last PM and much of the Parliament to our nation, our people believe that the influence of a hereditary monarch should be limited and more power given to elected officials. It should be the elected Parliament who holds this leash.

Signed,
Rachel C. Levitt,
Minister of Foreign Affairs
