History of the Republic
In 1608, the first successful colony in what would become the United States of America-Jamestown Settlement-was established by the Virginia Company in Britain. After this settlement began to flourish not on the sought-after gold and precious metals, but on raw materials and tobacco-abundant in the New World-settlements popped up all over North America. Cuba and th Floridan territory, Spanish possessions, had already been held for half a century-but England and France began to carve out spheres of influence, reaching from Georgia to Quebec.
The Seven Years War ended French hope at the New World as the English became the preeminent power of North America, accumulating France's Canadian possessions. British excess came down hard on the American colonists, however, and it was only a matter of time before the American Revolution began, with fighting breaking out in Lexington in 1775. Eight years later, the battle-tested Americans had won freedom and independence, and the United States of America was formed. Britain still maintained Canada, but the USA was sparking America.
European powers lost more and more territory over the next half-century, and the USA grew stronger, yet still small politically, as it purchased the Louisiana Territory from France, fought Britain a second time to a standstill from 1812 to 1814, and defeated Mexico and acquired territory all the way to the Pacific Ocean. As the new nation grew, however, it had its own turmoil and tribulations. Due to breaking tensions over slavery, states's rights, and other issues, Civil War broke in 1861.
The Civil War was a drawn-out conflict, lasting four years after te battle that should have won victory for the Union-Bull Run-ended in a rout by the Southern Confederates. At the war's finish in 1865, the South lay in ruins from the onslaught of the North, but the nation was united-in name alone. Tensions remained high between North and South, and even though Africans were freed from slavery, they were nowhere near being first-class citizens.
However, the late 1800s brought about boom times for capitalism for North America. The Gilded Age brought about the beginnings of independence from Britain for Canada in the late 1860s, while in the USA, big business rode high. The world's first billionaire rose to prominance-John D. Rockefeller-through the oil industry, while other industrial tycoons, such as Andrew Carnegie, also drove up fortunes. Cuba during this time, however, felt none of the good life.
Cuba was no paradise during the late 1800s. A Cuban independence revolution began in 1868, leading to the Ten Years War with Spain. At the end, Spain promised more autonomy to the war-weary Cuban revolutionaries, but none came-Spain remained on top. Slavery finally was abolished in Cuba several years later, but Spain was ever-aware of the US's eyeing of Cuba-in would only be time until the States came to get Cuba, as well.
That time came with the Spanish-American war to close out the 19th Century. In 1898, the USS Maine exploded off the Cuban coast-likely result of an engine accident, but blamed on a Spanish mine. With tensions agaisnt the Spanish dominators of Cuba already on edge, the latest incident drove in the nail for war against Spain. The US quickly mobilized, but neither side of this war really was ready for war. Spain, however, was considerably less ready, and their rag-tag fleet was quickly overwhelmed by the American navy at both Havana and Manilla in the Phillipines. The war was quick, and America emerged with both the Phillipines and Cuba in hand.
The 20th century brought about a spirit of progressivism. Government began getting more involved with life, and America was riding high-until the spectre of war fell upon the world. As World War I pushed into Europe, America stuck to their tried-and-true method of neutrality and isolationism-but it wouldn't last forever. In 1917, President Woodrow Wilson launched America into the Great War. The German forces in France, exhausted from fighting since 1914, couldn't match against the fresh troops from America. The Great War ended in 1918, and the US was propelled onto the big stage.
The 1920s brought mixed times. Life was great, and the economy rolled, but the shadow of extreme leftism-communism and socialism-cast a shadow of political fear. The economic turns, however, weren't forever. In 1929, the Stock Market plummeted due to numerous causes, and the entire world-but most certainly, America, Germany, and Canada-plummeted into the Great Depression. Economic downtimes stuck around, despite the New Deal of president Franklin Roosevelt in 1933. It somewhat alleviated the pain, but not until Germany-led by Adolf Hitler-launched another German crusade did the Depression finally left-through war.
As 1939 rolled about, the Nazi juggernaut of Germany slammed forth into the Blitzkrieg. Poland, Denmark, Norway, and France all fell to the German onslaught, and Britain and the USSR remained the last holdouts of independent power in Europe. The Battle of Britain staved off Germany temporarily, but it wouldn't last forever. America stayed neutral-but ironically, it was Imperial Japan, not Germany, that forced the sleeping eagle's hand.
Japan had carved out its own empire throughout the 1930s, strentching from Indonesia to China to Korea. When the US halted oil trade to Japan because of its aggression, the Japanese launched a surprise attack on the US base of Pearl Harbor, in Hawaii. This devestating attack on US soil, decimating the US Pacific fleet's battleship count, drove Roosevelt to war with the Axis powers and an alliance with the Allied Powers. Germany, Japan, and Italy all had numbered days.
Canada and the US both committed forces into the European theatre during World War II, first in North Africa, then to Sicily and Italy, and finally into the Great Crusade-the Normandy Invasion. As the Russian Bear slid down into German territory, Britain, Canada, and the US raced from the West through France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and finally into the Rhineland. Content with holding the western half of nearly defeated Germany, the Allies watched on as Russia sacrificed a million troops to conquer the German capital of Berlin-ending the war in the west.
The war in the east was slightly more troublesome for the Allies. British holdings had been swept out of Singapore, and America and Canada were forced into island-hopping to conquer the Pacific islands. Japanese turf fell chain by chain, until America reached the first of the crown jewles in Okinawa. Both it and Iwo Jima fell to heavy American losses through Japanese devotion, but with the USSR clamborning down from the steppes into Japanese territory, and with America dropping two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan was forced to surrender. World War II was over.
The following decades were tumultous. America entered into the Cold War against Russia as both sides jockeyed for position. The Korean War was the first such conflict, as American and South Korean troops fought against North Korean communist aggression. The Warsaw Pact of Europe squared off with the NATO powers as both sides stood off in a standstill. The Bay of Pigs was the second conflict-and it didn't bode well for Cuba. The USSR backed off support of Cuba as North Vietnam looked to find its own place, and Cuba was opened up to America's wrath. Havana was bombed into submission, and radical leader Fidel Castro killed by American special ops. A friendlier government stepped in.
Between the First Cuban War and the Vietnam War, an odd series of events took place near the town of Roswell, New Mexico. Some claimed mysterious lights had appeared throughout the skies, and abnormal behavior from local inhabitants of the town. The Office of Military Intelligence was all over the scene the day after the incident for a total of two months. After this, the installation of Area 51-located in an isolated desert in Nevada-was established. It grew into a monstrous outdoor military base beside a large complex that portruded out from three giant mountains-but what happened inside the mountains was up for speculation.
The Vietnam War was a bit perplexing. Why president Lyndon Johnson entered in the first place is a bit of speculation, but despite that, America did hold on fairly well. An aggressive campaign of carpet-bombing devestated North Vietnam, and as President Richard Nixon entered office, aerial attack was stepped up. Despite nearly every bit of urban North Vietnam reduced to rubble, America and South Vietnam could not find a foothold on the ground. Americans made a truce with North Vietnam, and left the war-after losing 75,000 troops. South Vietnam fell fast after.
Cuba became the source of a final conflict of the Cold War. The "friendly" government that had entered had turned towards the communist curtain, and both the Canadian government and US Reagan administration agreed in 1983 to put an end to Cuba's shadow. As the USSR was busy with internal problems, a combined Canadian-US task force of two carrier battle groups and three landing groups, supplemented by a considerable capitalist-friendly underground movement, stormed Cuba. The war lasted a mere two weeks-the power of both countries, along with the harrassment of the Cuban rebel forces against the government, led to a quick conquest.
The sheer number of Cuban refugees who lived in Floridan cities of Miami and Tampa influenced Cuba's next move. Rather than form another independent nation, Cuba petitioned for statehood-and promptly recieved it, as the 51st state of the United States of America. Canada, however, began to have its own issues at this time, centered around the province of Quebec. The Quebec Revolution would directly lead to the formation of the North American Republic.
Quebec has always considered itself to be seperate from Canada, and in 1985, they tried to implement this ideal. Fed up with continuous petitions for more autonomy, Quebec declared itself an independent nation. If this hadn't been bad enough, Quebec forces assaulted a Canadian garrison at Montreal, killing every soldier and contractor inside. This sparked Canadian tensions, and the Canadian government, somewhat low on military supplies, appealed to the US government for assistance. They were not dissapointed.
The Reagan administration sent in 150,000 troops to pacify the recalcitrant Quebec people. Fighting in Montreal, the main theatre of battle besides that of the city of Quebec, was fierce and street-to-street, as Quebec had formerly contained many Canadian military bases. US control of the skies was nearly immediately conceded, and Quebec City was bombed frequently with smart munitions, taking apart military locales and rebel positions. F-15 and F-14 flights took apart the Quebec air assets, clearing the skies for the new revolutionary F-117 stealth fighter.
Quebec couldn't last long against the American superiority, and it surrended after three months of fighting. After the situation had been somewhat sorted out, American and Canadian representatives met in Chicago, Illinois, to discuss the issues of North America as a whole. The process went better than either party could have imagined-as 1986 rolled about, Canada and the US had signed a mutual military pact of defense. 1987 brought about free border traffic and trade between the nations, and permitted instant citizenship for either nation's populace looking to move from one nation to the other.
Reagan here went down as the third-greatest president in American history, behind Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. At a political summit between Canada and America in Vancouver, British Columbia, Reagan negotiated for a full-time political merger of Canada and America-based n the idea of "regional sovereignty". Canada, already working on trying to join with America on political issues, was delighted by the terms of the deal that allowed Canada plenty of authority. They quickly signed the deal that created the nation simply named America.
As president Reagan left office, his successor, George H. W. Bush, showed his own political prowess. Bush wiped out the concepts of "Provinces" and "states" completely, and negotiated with the Canadian government to form a consolidated, single executive position-the Chancellor. The capital would not stay in Washington D.C., but instead move to a more central location, Chicago. Bush broke the Regional process into the former nations-America, Canada, and Cuba-and came up with the District Division to form smaller constituents of smaller land areas to better deal with problems, much as the old states had been.
Bush's idea was a smashing hit, and his popularity reached almost-Reagan levels. Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, however, had other ideas against democracy. Hussein was no fan of America, and to provoke American high, invaded the nation of Kuwait. Working with NATO forces, Bush's American forces drove into Iraq in a lightning campaign that lasted only ten days. Iraq sued for peace, and America came out even higher.
Bush was elected for a second term as Chancellor in 1992, and led another successful campaign of re-organization. He deleted the national name of "America", coming up with a more general, official-sounding name: The North American Republic, the wave of the future. The economy hit all-time highs, and internal success was immense. George H.W. Bush left office in 1996 cracking the Top 10 for American leaders.
The next Chancellor, however, brought strife to the executive branch. Due to the Republican party-party of both Reagan and Bush-indecisive about choosing Senator Mitch McConnell or Senator Ted Stevens for the president candidate, the Democratic party picked up steam with candidate William Clinton. Though he was no political mastermind like Bush and Reagan, Clinton appealed to the average American, something Stevens and McConnell could neither do. Clinton won by a small margin over Stevens, and the Republic House of Representatives fell to the Democratic party, though the Senate remained Republican.
The Clinton early years seemed much like Bush's strategy: the economy continued to climb, and internally, America was strong. However, these were simply lasting effects from the Bush administration-in reality, Clinton's economic policies were doing negative effects. Clinton won the Chancellor elections again in 2000, just before the Century Recession began. This recession wsa nowhere near the Great Depression, and only lasted two years, but it proved to be Clinton's undoing.
It began with the collapse of American computer company Apple into several fracturing, squabbling companies. Rather than do anything productive, the Clinton administration instead clamped down on Microsoft, producer of Software. With too much governement intervention, tech stocks began to plummet, and the rest of the market soon followed. It was very similar to the 1970s recession, and it wasn't particularly bad-but it did enough to offset Americans and drive sentiment against the Clinton administration and the Democratic party. A scandal in 2003 regarding Clinton and a secretary did nothing to improve his popularity.
Not surprisingly, in 2004, the Republican party won in a landslide. Chancellor candidate Bill Frist blew past Democratic candidate Tom Daschle for the office, and the Republicans re-acquired the Republic Senate. Now in office for three years, Frist's administration has been one of re-building the Republic into the economic and poltical power it was under Bush and Reagan. Military spending, drastically cut during the Clinton administration, is back on course to reach Reagan levels. The populace is content and happy with Frist, and it is more than likely he will win re-election in 2008.

Office of Military Intelligence
The Office of Military Intelligence-OMI-has a rather complicated history, that really sparked with one event. The department was first created in 1942 as World War II wore on, and was used against the German and Japanese militaries in deciphering codes, interpreting messages, and other intel purposes. Once the war was over, OMI was used in the early Cold War against Soviet communications and determining signs of Soviet actions.
OOC: Here comes my "Suspension of Disbelief" part. Ripping off "Independence Day" here. Don't worry, it doesn't really give me any advantage (maybe a little one), it simply justifies the past a bit as well as lays the groundwork for my intelligence operation.
IC:
The entire purpose of OMI changed entirely after June 14th, 1947. What became an infamous day in the minds of Science Fiction fans actually was a giant cover-up. The Air Force, claiming it had lost a top-secret weather baloon, salvaged downed debris and rubble-and an "unknown" object, much like a rounded 3-D rhombus, about 15 feet long, 10 feet wide, and 7 feet high. This object was reported seen by many of Roswell, New Mexico's inhabitants as falling from the sky, but OMI was quick to dispatch agents. The event has been relegated to lunatic status since.
However, a different reality truly occured that night in Roswell, New Mexico. The event changed the entire stance of American cosmology and xenology, and allowed for many of the technological improvements of the next half-century by the Americans. The "object" downed that night was in reality two crashed ships-from somewhere OMI had no idea. Three corpses were found inside the first, smaller ship, and two in the one slightly larger-and they weren't human corpses. They were reptilian in appearance, with tentacled appendages and large, bloated heads-extraterrestrials, though dead.
OMI brought the corpses and the downed ships to its recently constructed military base dubbed "Area 51" in a remote location of Nevada. The bodies of the beings were placed in a preservative solution to prevent decay while the ships went into an analysis hanger inside Area 51's mountain base. Not even the president knew about OMI's dealings in Area 51, and the base "ceased to exist" in the minds of all but OMI and the Air Force.
OMI grew far beyond imagination during the next half-century, and gained knowledge through analysis of the two alien craft. Though much of the two ships were (and still are) unable to be determined, more knowledge was (and still is) picked up as time proceeded. In 1983, another crash happened, though with considerable less eyewitnesses, in Africa. Though it was widely recieved as a meteor strike, OMI was on it in a flash-it was discovered to be another crashed ship, a third similar to the other two. OMI was on to something, it knew, but both organisms inside this one were also dead. They were fresher, however, and were placed in a similar, but newer, preservative to keep the bodies fresh. The ship was taken back to Area 51.
The site was left by OMI strewn with ancient bones and tools found at a local site of ancient humans-now regarded as Site 117. Unknowingly, what archaeologists at Site 117 find is simply cover by OMI in its dealings. The Unmanned Aerial Vehicle project began soon, with OMI and the Air Force using technology deciphered from the trio of vessels in the production of the early UAVs. Many Americans regarded some of the technological upgrades simply as time-but in reality, it was the dealings of a secret organization.
OMI swelled in power during the 1980s and 1990s, becoming the organization it is today. It developed into four subdivisions, called Sections, with the lower the number representing higher security (AKA, 0 is highest, while 3 is lowest).
Section 0: The most secret branch of OMI, many in the organization don't even know Section 0 exists. It serves as the division that deals with problems inside the organization and clears projects and assignments without ever being seen. It is dubbed 0 for its secrecy-most believe that "Section 1" is "Section 1" because it is the highest branch of security.
Section 1: This is the branch of OMI that deals with the projects of the organization with the Air Force in conjunction, and has come to analyze the alien project. It has developed such objectives as the F-117 Nighthawk, the UAV and UCAV projects, and other innovations. A large part of Section 1 is devoted to working with genetics, while another major group works with engineering and aerospace. They also work on special weapons.
Section 2: Section 2 is the actual Intelligence of the organization, and is regarded close to what the former CIA of the United States was. It is the highest security branch actually known by the anybody outside the Air Force or OMI itself. It works on satellite imagery, law enforcement, and other means to determine paths of other nations along with internal Republic issues.
Section 3: Section 3 is the most active, and therefore most widely-known branch of OMI, though in reality Section 3 is the most deceptive. It is a branch that deals with propoganda to conceal actions of the Republic that either go wrong or would upset the Republic populace, and also ensure that all projects of Section 1 stay secret. They are in charge of security for Area 51, and have developed its masking program from satellite imagery that reveals Area 51 to be simply seemingly an air base.
OMI today is headquartered in the capital of Chicago, but much of OMI's activity operates in the vast Area 51. It is instrumental in the future of the Republic military and continues the advance of America's technological pace.

We believe the invasion of Kazakhstan did have merit-it is a fairly rampant country by modern standards. However, the invasion of Trinidad and Tobago-a Carribbean country still coming into its own and developing well-was a blatant violation of positive development in a promising island nation. We do not object to your ICBM deployment for mutual security-as this USSM could very well try to sway other Latin or South American nations to see similar terms, and it would be in both our interests to try and keep this potential thorn out of contention for power. Colombia and Venezuela have long been trouble spots, and it seems this will not change soon.
As far as alliances go-we are not yet ready to commit to a full-blown military alliance, but we will go one step further than we have with our promising friends in the GGA and Animarnia and propose a Conditional Mutual Defense Pact between both our nations, in the case of aggression by communist regimes on either nation.
We would love to hear your response on such a proposal, and if it seems a positive development, we can draft up a charter for such a pact for review and revisal.

With plenty of naval installations in the region-particularly at naval base Guantanamo Bay-we can easily route some forces simply on standby to patrol of the area from possible future incursions from the troublesome USSM. In order to find a little more of their intentions, we have committed to a Pan-American conference they are holding. No doubt they prepare to preach further agenda-but if we can anyhow swing them to a friendlier approach and away from the path of communism, we will be at no loss to try.
Either way, USSM for the time being has been downgraded to "Wary" on the Republic's Diplomacy standings. Depending on the near future, we may be subject to improving or degrading them-but we cast a sharp eye down to South America for the time being.
