Repercussions Of War [Closed/Semi-Open]

OOC: This will basically be a smaller thread about the repercussions of the war and failed conference for our country. Cover the politic aspects, economic aspects, or just post a detailed piece from the media explaining it – whatever, as long as you were involved in the conflict (though outside countries may post media pieces or offer aid). There may be civil unrest or a repeat conflict, it depends, but so far their won’t be. I'll be away for a few days so won't reply.

Mrs. Bourla Parkins walked up to the daunting podium. The eyes of well over one million citizens of Honako focused all their attention on her, in her brown boring suit, crumpled and messy, and her worried expression. It had been 12 hours since the attack – everyone wanted to know what had happened since the TV went off and the gunshots began. The journalists waited, the TV cameras did too – it was the first broadcast they would show since the Commission pulled the plug on all forms of media 24 hours earlier. Mrs. Parkins stood up on the carved wooden podium and finally began:

“Greetings. Our nation has been at war with the interfering nation of Oslea – a fact you could not miss. Though I’m sure many of you will have been informed of the grand peace talks organized by the Commission, and maybe some of you the events that took place there. There was, to be blunt with you, an horrific invasion by our most hated and feared opposition – the Smokers Union! But, in a true Honakon style, we did not lay down our weapons and surrender to their demands – but we fought the best we could and eventually prevailed. I will not lie to you, hundreds lay dead in this building behind me – diplomatic bonds have been weakened or strengthened.

Now after the shocking events of the last few months, and the last twenty-four hours, the government is going to be straight with you – this has had a severe damaging effect on our country. Our economy has effectively collapsed, massive donations are needed to help our now weak country after the destructive effects of war which have seen, as I’m sure many of you are aware, have caused millions of jobs to be lost and a minor ecomonic depression. But trust in your government, trust in Honako – stay here and your nation will be safe, and your coffers will soon be filled again.

As I’m sure you will realize. During this horrific war many lives have been lost. We believe around 612 people were killed, 80% of them innocent citizens, by the bombardment of our capital city of Liche by the Oslean artillery. Once we eradicated that threat a massive anthrax attack wiped out a whole battalion of Allied Forces and 1,028 Honakon Armed Force soldiers, plus cost the lives of 1,132 people who lived nearby. The total number of deaths from this war is not yet confirmed, but is believed to be around the 5,000 mark – a horrific amount of lives lost for the right to Smoke? This does not include the events in the Jabero Commission Headquarters, which could have claimed up to 300 Commission lives.

“The politic effects have been saddening. Niles Gordon, our peaceful, honourable Deputy Commissioner was brutal murdered during the hostage situation – leaving his position open to a new elected Deputy and his death being mourned as I speak most probably. Mrs. Bourla Parkins and her strong Commission, of which thirty were killed in the attack on the HQ, will decide who his replacement is in the coming weeks. His funeral will be private, only open to close international allies, members of government and his friends and family. Though there will be a public memorial service which we expect millions to attend.

Though, whatever you may think, our strong government has not yielded to the demand of the Smokers Union – and we will not allow smoking in this country. We have also now banned all drugs, including alcohol, to cleanse our nation from this filth. It is all for your benefit. We also have enforced the following laws concerning our politic relations with other countries:"

Mrs. Parkins coughed and began to read out the list calmly:

"1) All people who originate from the country of Oslea will be deported back home immediately. This is for your own safety; we fear that our citizens will not approve of people of a country that waged war on us so savagely living here.
2) All diplomats from Oslea are banned from entering the nation of Honako unless requested. We allow citizens of Oslea to enter our fine nation for holidaying, though we strongly recommend not doing so for your own safety.
3) All nations that helped us during the conflict, which includes Tolvaros, Kanami, Buddha C, Aurum Domus and the RSU are greatly thanked. We do not know what we can offer to repay – if you wish for anything please only ask. We hope we can be great allies in the future also.

The future of Honako is not bleak; this is just a blotch in our past. Everything will be back to normal soon, rest assured citizens. Thank you for listening”

For the first time after a speech Mrs. Parkins was nervous as to what the reaction would be. Mrs. Bourla Parkins walked away from the eerie silence that had greeted her whole speech. Honako was in danger of something, whether it had be an uprising, a revolt or at the very least a mass of protests against the collapse of the economy. She wondered whether she should have been so frank, but most of all she wondered what was going to happen to Honako in the future, a subject she’d been vague on in the speech – how could she get out of this.

All nations involved in the war, even Osleans for the laws that had been passed about them, were sent a video tape of the speech.

Prime Minister Joseph Hartnall walked up to the podium, hesitating. He paused for a moment. He cleared his throat, and glanced at his cue cards.

"Citizens of Oslea," he said in a cracking, nervous voice, "I come with grave news that our nation was not able to convince the Government of Honako to allow increased civil rights within their borders."

"I must admit, that this was, this whole conflict... it was the brainchild of me. A-and... The cigarette companies of Oslea."

"The conflict... it was under the guise of a fight for rights. We, the Oslean Government, had peppered you with this propaganda and our fine Oslean army soldiers out there have paid for it with their lives. I am truly sorry for letting this happen. We fought... to increase the profit of cigarette companies, therefore strengthening our economy."

The crowd murmured and gasped.

"Our soldiers, our Rangers, our men, our pilots out there have fought valiantly for us, but even I am not sure if it was for a good cause. We have lost many good men at our artillery outpost loss, over 100. This may pale in comparison to what our opponents recieved under the power of Oslea, but, a human life lost is still a great hit to our national pride."

"I have failed you. Now many countries look down upon our nation, and I cannot say I am a proud man anymore. I cannot blame Honako for the actions it has taken against our citizens abroad. I have lost one of our diplomats in Honako. I have lost the lives of our soldiers, and caused the deaths of many innocent Honakons. I have dragged ourselves in a... unnecessary war. An unworthy war. I have put a nation that isn't even cruel, that did not even do anything hostile to us, into darkness. That is why... I am resigning."

"My Vice President will remain in power until a new one is chosen. God bless Oslea. And.. Miss Bourla Parkins and the citizens of Honako.. I apologize.

The crowd's reaction was mixed. Some booed, some talked with each other, and some just stood there, surprised. Oslea was now leaderless, its former incapable of leading a nation.

Aftermath of the Honako-Oslea Conflict
by Arissa Steed, Oslean Sun

The Honako-Oslea conflict has changed many things in our country, and with the help of my researchers I have gathered changes made to our Federation because of the war.

The government was quick to assemble an integration plan for the deported Osleans. They decided that the government was able to offer the deportees a home in any major Amber Crown city, and have a job within the government or military until they can find a new one (if they want) and can leave from the government or military job they choose when they find a new one.

Most travel agents and agent companies in the Federation immediately decreased the price of their Honako vacation packages, since they were expecting a sharp drop in the amount of trips to Honako since the war.

The cigarette companies who had convinced the capitalist government to start the war never achieved their aim of reopening a market in Honako, and their sales decreased due to groups boycotting them after Joseph Hartnall revealed they were the ones who instigated the war.

The second Prime Minister not able to complete his term in 3 years (David Egret was killed in the Eco-Civil war) Former PM Joseph Hartnall, who had a meagre approval rating of 17% before his resignation, resigned from his post and therefore created a power vacuum to be filled by his incompetent Vice PM until a new group wins majority to Parliament. The Liberal Party, Conservative Party, Green Party, Communist Party, and World Party all start fighting each over for the majority.

Mirage Films Ltd. has begun production of the film Of Smoke and War, which tells the story of the Honako-Oslea conflict, from the formation of the Smokers Union to the assassination of two Honakon Defence Commissioners, to the horrific anthrax bombings, and the rest of the events in the war. It will be produced by award-winning director Jasper Devins, who has also directed the film Shattered Skies, which portrayed the details of the Eco-Civil war.

Temporary Headquarters Of The Honako Commission, Liche

Mrs. Bourla Parkins threw the papers back on the desk and leaned back on the chair smiling. Oslea may not have suffered as much of a blow money wise and in terms of the dead, but politically a scandal had been uncovered, and their smoking industry and government was in tatters for a short while at least - and this comforted Mrs. Parkins. Her Commission had been held under hostage and still they had not withdrawn from the situation like the coward she thought the now ex-president of Oslea was. She did hope though that the new head of state would be far more open to more diplomatic relations, or at least forming a stable situation, between the two countries.

She had sent out the order for all citizens of Oslea to be deported, though they were only in their thousands anyway. Now she had to reply to Vetaka very generous offer of aid, one of the benefits it seemed of being in such a helpful alliance as the UFAN.

TO: UFAN High Council

Honako welcomes your aid and greatly thanks you for your offer in this dire situation we find ourselves in. We will try to repay you in the future, though we feel as if it could be many years before our economy is stable enough to do so. Again we greatly thank the UFAN High Council for their generous aid.

Although normally we would not allow troops into our country at such a fragile time, we trust the UFAN and they may be needed to help the police with any minor uprisings and to help rebuild the country. Thank you again. Please feel free to send UFAN representatives to the funeral and memorial service of the dead in the war.

The General and his son Jake watched the news conference as they ate lunch. The General was in pretty good shape but he would have to rest his injured leg for a few more days before he could return to Aurum Domus.

High General Samuel Oron got up behind the podium in the media room of the Ruler's Palace and began his speech:

"As you all know the hostage situation in Honako is over. We have lost many but we have accomplished what we came for. All those lost and all those who fought will be awarded with the Golden Star of Bravery, our highest honor. Our friends is Honako are suffering in more ways than us and because of this I haave approved an aid package consisting of 1 billion USD and a force of 500 peacekeeping troops and 500 engineers to aid in the rebuildign of Honako. All of our other military personnel currently deployed to Honako, with the exception of workers on the bases before this conflict, will be arriving hoem shortly. Thank you for your time."

Prime Minister Rene Valencia stood somberly outside St. Andrew's Catholic Church, watching the six soldiers in full dress uniform carry the lacquered casket outside. Rain beat down softly onto the massive crowd gathered around, reflecting the mood of all Ezaltia. Flags all across the country were flying at half-mast.

A seventh soldier approached the casket, carrying a neatly folded Ezaltian flag. He joined the other six in laying the flag over the casket, and then they all stood at attention as five riflemen raised their Lee-Enfields into the air and fired. Then the pallbearers carried the casket to the hearse, where several police cars and armored Hummer H3s escorted Nathan Caldwell to his final resting place.

Mrs. Bourla Parkins sat calmly in front of the glaring cameras. After much deliberation she had come to her decision about who would take over from Niles Gordon, and felt he was an ideal choice. The men looming behind the cameras began the countdown until they were on air, and Mrs. Parkins prepared herself to address the nation.

“We’re live!” A distant voice shouted.

“Greetings people of Honako. As you know, our peaceful, kind and rather democratic Deputy High Commissioner, British born Niles Gordon, was murdered in the horrific hostage situation a few days ago. I have therefore decided to appoint the Head of the Military Commission, General Claes, as my new deputy. He may be different to Gordon, more militaristic, but I feel he would make a great leader of the new Honako one day and is the perfect choice if we want to defend ourselves from vicious attacks, like the ones we have experienced, again. We will now be switching our government priorities around which could include more spending on defence, though that will be decided in the next few days. We are also glad to inform you Oslea have shown no hostile front towards us and we hope all this will end now, and end peacefully.

Tomorrow will be the day of the funeral of all that died during the war and the hostage situation, including Mr. Gordon. Family, friends and close diplomats may attend the service, though all can attend the memorial service and memorial parade. Citizens, please feel free to attend the memorial and show your respect to the dead of this tragic war and events. Thank you.”

Official Statement by Mrs. Bourla Parkins to the Honako People

We can proudly announce that after assistance from other nations, and the general stabilization of Honako and it’s economy – we have now drastically increased the money available to the Commission. This will help make our nation great again, and have a powerful economy and people with rich lives like we did before the war. In a recent UN report about our country, our level was increased from a horrific and worrying ‘weak’ to a steady ‘fair’. We can only improve from here.

Sadly though unemployment rates are at an all time low, with a massive 22.78% of our nation out of work. We are drastically trying to create jobs, and we are disappointed that a nation once famed for it’s pro-working attitude and having a low unemployment rate has slipped so dramatically.
