History

The Spartacus main battle tank was designed by Kahanistan Military Industries to combat the threat of the Doomani Imperator main battle tanks used against them with devastating effect against the Merkava IV tanks defending during Operation Silva.

Noting the superior power and range of Doomani ETC tank guns, it was decided to devise a domestic ETC tank gun with a superior rate of fire to enemy tanks and ability to launch various missiles through a single 105mm cannon.

Named Spartacus after the gladiator who nearly eradicated slavery in ancient Rome, this tank was designed to answer the threat of a repeated invasion by the Imperium Doomanum and the possible resultant enslavement or worse.

Weapons

The Spartacus is equipped with a 105mm ETC gun, like those used in many advanced militaries as artillery. The reasoning behind this move was that the 120mm smoothbore guns of the Merkava had proven slow and ineffective against enemy armor; stronger, faster weapons with superior range were needed. It also carries a 40mm ETC chaingun with a wide variety of ammunition, from programmable air bursts for use against light vehicles and infantry to tracers to direct infantry and air support to put fire on a certain position.

Defenses

The Spartacus comes with multiple layers of armor spaced apart to blunt the impact of anti-tank munitions. The first layer is simple modular armor, which can be replaced in plates if damaged. Beyond this is a layer of NERA, and an anti-spalling layer inside to prevent HESH damage to the interior of the tank. Between each layer is roughly 25mm of space in which to absorb explosive gases or kinetic force of heavy penetrators.

Other defenses include the lack of a blowoff panel over the ammunition compartment, as it was deemed too vulnerable to enemy munitions. To vent the ammunition should an enemy missile penetrate the ammunition storage, a hole is drilled in the bottom of the tank floor. The explosion in the ammunition compartment will follow the path of least resistance - out the bottom of the tank.

The Spartacus is also highly resistant to top-attack munitions as the hatch, a necessary weak point of any tank design, is on the bottom, hence the 400mm clearance under the tank. The crew crawls under the tank to enter the hatch, rather than an exposed hatch that could be penetrated by enemy fire. While this makes evacuating the tank slow, that sacrifice was deemed necessary in order to protect the tank from enemy fire.

For the commander to be able to spot enemy targets for the 105mm gun, or to fire the chaingun at lighter targets, a seat is attached to a hydraulic lift system. The commander sits in this seat, and to move into spotting mode, he or she activates the hydraulic lift, raising the seat as well as the armor plates immediately above the seat so that the commander's head is slightly above the level of the tank's main body. He or she then sights through a pair of lenses attached to the top of the command seat, which can be switched to infrared or night vision as well as conventional vision, and aims the chaingun to fire on appropriate targets. This adds many parts, but was considered important as tank commanders usually represent several years of training, experience, and promotions, and are thus not easily replaced.

Conclusion

The Spartacus MBT places survivability above lethality, to the point where it uses a relatively light, albeit versatile, 105mm gun. This gives crew members a certain sense of security, and enables them to feel safe against most threats that lack the heavy armor protection of the new MBT.

The 105mm shell has superior range to many larger shells, further enhanced by use of ETC, and a higher rate of fire, making it a formidable opponent against almost any threat, and for those opponents with heavy armor against which penetration by a 105mm shell is unlikely, the Spartacus also carries APFSDS missiles designed to pierce heavy armor at ranges of over 15 kilometers.

Nice tank looks impressive. I just revamped my arsenal with the Nikal IV tanks from Macabees though so my budget is thin right now..interesting that you put protection over firepower did you model it after the Israeli Merkavah (i know i spelled that wrong) at all..I ask because its one of the few MBT's that places crew safety above all else

OOC: Yes, to some extent. Where the Merkava puts the entry on the rear (only 5 - 10% of tank hits are to the back) I decided to go further and put the hatch on the bottom. When I got a heap of criticism on the Draftroom because the original design didn't allow a top hatch, I simply put one of the top armor plates over the commander's seat so the commander can spot through.

I used Merkavas in most of my conflicts and they didn't show too well, so I beefed the protection, cut down on the gun size, and devoted more weight to armor.

Glad you like it. Hopefully I'll get a few orders, my economy sucks after getting plowed under by the Doomies. :sniper:

Imperial Message Gatawan Arms Industries

The empire would like to purchase twenty of the Spartacus MBT's for testing..they could serve as a complement to our own GAI CougarX medium tank. Money will be wired upon conformation of order

To help your economy out, I will order twenty-four of these tanks to test within the Black Wolves. The total will be 288 million, but I want to order a special one. The rest can be dark green or dark gray, but the special one is be different.

One Spartacus main battle tank, you know I meet that man, with a custom paint job. I would like a real looking flame paint job with a black base. On the rear, paint ’For the greater good’ and right under it 'Death to the evil ones on this world', both of them being in Latin. This will be my own tank to play around it.

Anyways, I’ll paid 2 million for this custom paint job. I hope it you fill this order.

[OOC: There is no such thing as an APFSDS missile, they are called Kinetic Energy Missiles, and they are much too big to be able to fit into a 105mm cannon, have enough speed to pierce and MBT and have a 15km range. I don't belive there are any 105mm gun launched missiles let alone KEMs.

Also, glacis are supposed to be very thin, something with the glacis this thick will be well over 150 tons, M1A2 has a glacis made of steel (apparently chobham doesn't work well when sloped), around 200mm thick, but it's sloped at over like 10 degrees from vertical to get it's actual thickness to LOS thickness.), I'd go with 363mm actual thickness to get your current numbers, you'll need to up the weight anyway, you're still way over the M1A2 in thickness, and 105mm doesn't shed that much weight over the 120mm, only about 1 tonne IRL, maybe 2 tonnes for ETC. Your turret thickness is right one for a actual thickness of 670 and a slope of 60 degrees from horizontal (again, composites don't do well when sloped, and at 60 degrees if made from steel you're about 773mm LOS thickness, but with composites giving about a 2-2.5 thickness efficency over steel, you're fine), if you wanted too, you could lower the actual thickness to about 600mm and keep the same RHA vs KE/HE.]

OOC: I agree with TSS on all but one point, there are 105mm Gun Launched Missiles, as LAHAT is known to capable of this.

Gataway, Trans: Orders confirmed.
TSS: I gave enough ground on the Draftroom. Once Mac gets MWS straightened out, I'm leaving NSD. I've had enough of them.

First, the glacis is the thickest part of the tank. Second, a "missile" in the strictest sense is any kind of projectile, any APFSDS would be referred to as a "missile" under this term. Finally, APFSDS rarely are 105mm, they are in fact much thinner and would simply have smaller sabots to fit in a 105mm cannon.

Your tank with "Pro maiora bona" on the rear and "Mors ad malefactores in hic mundo" on the front will arrive in three weeks. This will be $302 million, $288 million for the 24 tanks you want to train on and $14 million for your custom paint job.

This filling must be kept secret from our government, as the Foreign Minister is still very upset regarding her fellow politicians in Doomingsland. She has been lobbying for an embargo.

Money wired. Secret is a good idea as I’m not favorite in the eyes of many Kahanistanians. Damn, why did I listen to the nut-job Doomani Caesar? Maybe I was drugged. Anyway, I’m done with the terrorist supporting manic and all of his lackeys.

And don’t take this as a personal attack on Kahanistanian in general, but your Foreign Minister is an idiot. She almost got a lot of people killed for her idiotic message to me.

Anyways, thank you for your time.

OOC: Are you good as Latinizing names? I’m trying to find a web site that can turn Jason Scott Wolf into a Latin sounding name. The Latin version will be the real name of the Count.

OOC: I can tell you that the Latin word for wolf is lupus. I'm not great at Latinising names, Doomingsland or Allanea would likely know it better than I do. It's been almost 8 years since I had Latin in school. You might try running just Jason Scott through one of those web sites, but Jason is a Greek name (originally Iason, as Greek doesn't have a J) and there was a lot of crossover in ancient times between Greek and Latin.

OOC: Ah…thanks anyways. I’ll maybe talk with Allanea about it as…well, you know. Anywyas, good luck with your tanks.
