The VLT M5: Truck Excellence
In 2002, the last of the VLT M4 military trucks were put out of service. The vehicle was old, and didn’t meet the demands of the Van Luxemburgian Military anymore. As VLT was sent to work, replacement trucks originally intended for construction sites were ordered at Renault. These vehicles were a huge improvement over the original M4’s, but were judged not reliable enough for military jobs. Now, in 2007, VLT presents the M5, a Military Truck based on technology and reliability. The vehicle will be delivered in 2 versions: a Frontline Transport and a Logistical Truck. The vehicle is based off the DAF/GINAF range of vehicles.
Logistical Truck: The advantage for logistic transports
The M5 comes in two versions: the Logistical Truck (Version ‘A’), and the Frontline Transport (Version ‘B’). The Logistical truck is primarily meant to transport goods from and to the frontline, over motorways/highways, or through muddy terrain, in any weather. The vehicle can be equipped to transport IFV’s and other light vehicles aswell, by linking up a dolly and a trailer to the rigid vehicle combination. It is however not advised to transport MBT’s or HBT’s; these are too heavy for the vehicle.
The M5 is a modular vehicle. It can be equipped with several modules, and cabs can be freely exchanged between vehicles. Applique armouring is possible, the M5 supports armouring up to the B7 protection standard. A short list of modular add-on possibilities:
- Command & Control unit
- Troop Transport
- Open
- Closed
- Munitions Transport (Armoured)
- Liquid Transport
- Mobile Hospital
- Refrigerated transport
- Flatbed
- Vehicle Transport
The Logistical Vehicle is better equipped than the Troop Transport Version, with a Radio/CD MP3 Player, Cruise Control and Airbags, amongst other things, and will be delivered with the Hydro-Pneumatic Vehicle System, opposed to the Troop Transport, which will be delivered with rigid axles, with the HPVS system optional.
HPVS: Hydro-Pneumatic Vehicle System
HPVS is a completely autonomous suspension system, which is operated by hydraulic cylinders instead of Air, which is usually used on truck suspensions. The cylinders of the system are connected to eachother on either side. The system monitors the actual sort of soil beneath it (or can be set by the driver), and it adapts to soil, so it can keep the vehicle comfortable at all times. The HPVS system is of the 3rd generation, which guarantees light and compact cylinders, which do not need to be serviced oftenly. Reality shows that the system can handle overload and will probably not need to be replaced before the truck itself.
The System stabilises each side of the vehicle individually. Because Crossbeams don’t need to be used for the suspension, weight can be kept low. The HPVS system offers advantages to the users:
- Better Driving behaviour
- Better in rough terrain
- Automatic Levelling
- Variable loading heights (more comfortable loading)
- More Stabilisation of the chassis
There are several other techniques used by HPVS:
Crosswise Leveling
The suspension keeps the wheels in contact with the ground, while the cab and load space will remain level. This means the vehicle can drive sideways on slopes more easily.
Vehicle Weight Indicator
From the Driver’s Position, a small monitor will show the actual weight of the vehicle, both in Tons and in Military Classes, so the Driver can check if he can pass bridges, roads, etcetera.
Automatic Roll stabiliser
This System will recognise situations where extra transverse support is needed, and the system will actively try to stop Vehicle Roll; which means the vehicle will stop leaning over in corners. This will also reduce tire wear, meaning less service to the vehicle.
Container lifting system
Since the VLT M5 is Modular, it will have to lift containers up it’s chassis quite often. Therefore, HPVS will assist the chassis by lowering the back a few centimetres, which means that there will be less stress on the rear axle, and the angle over which the container will have to be lifted will be reduced. The system automatically return to normal height as soon as the vehicle’s speed surpasses 5 km/h.
Electronic Vehicle Steering (EVS)
When EVS is installed and engaged, the truck will use extra axles to steer, up to 3 when mounted on an 8x8 or 10x8. This enables precision steering of the vehicle, so the truck can get out of tricky situations in a few moves. Due to the increased agility, long vehicles no longer will have problems with going around tight corners, and can safely head through a dense forest without having to make exceptionally tricky turns.
SensAxle +
In some cases, extra loading capacity is needed. Therefore, an extra axle can be added to the back or the front of the vehicle, allowing ten additional tons of load capacity. Optionally, the axle can be made a lifting axle.
The ‘B’ Version: Troop Transport
Close to the Frontline, areas might be too dangerous for the Logistical Vehicle, or the ‘A’ Version is simply too expensive to be destroyed on the frontline. Therefore, VLT has created the M5b, commonly known as Troop Transport. This vehicle has a rigid set-up, with an open loading space behind the cab, which can be covered with water-resistant cloth to protect from the weather, or to hide objects or men from sight. The cab is armoured to a Level B7, and the amount of glass has been cut in half, and can be further reduced by lowering the armour screens mounted on the truck. The vehicle is equipped with a bulbar, which can optionally be delivered with an extra lights set. However, The lighting can also be completely blinded or set to only deliver a small amount of light for frontline situations. This can be done by the flip of a switch inside the vehicle.
The B-version is made for reliability and toughness. Therefore, it comes with rigid axles and a manual gearbox. The vehicle has been kept as simple as possible, with options to a bare minimum. The vehicle should operate anywhere, anytime, even if service intervals are far apart. It will work, even with temperatures ranging from – 32 degrees Celsius to +50 Degrees Celsius, with bullets flying around it, and a muddy pool ahead.
