The VLT M5: Truck Excellence

In 2002, the last of the VLT M4 military trucks were put out of service. The vehicle was old, and didn’t meet the demands of the Van Luxemburgian Military anymore. As VLT was sent to work, replacement trucks originally intended for construction sites were ordered at Renault. These vehicles were a huge improvement over the original M4’s, but were judged not reliable enough for military jobs. Now, in 2007, VLT presents the M5, a Military Truck based on technology and reliability. The vehicle will be delivered in 2 versions: a Frontline Transport and a Logistical Truck. The vehicle is based off the DAF/GINAF range of vehicles.

Logistical Truck: The advantage for logistic transports

The M5 comes in two versions: the Logistical Truck (Version ‘A’), and the Frontline Transport (Version ‘B’). The Logistical truck is primarily meant to transport goods from and to the frontline, over motorways/highways, or through muddy terrain, in any weather. The vehicle can be equipped to transport IFV’s and other light vehicles aswell, by linking up a dolly and a trailer to the rigid vehicle combination. It is however not advised to transport MBT’s or HBT’s; these are too heavy for the vehicle.

The M5 is a modular vehicle. It can be equipped with several modules, and cabs can be freely exchanged between vehicles. Applique armouring is possible, the M5 supports armouring up to the B7 protection standard. A short list of modular add-on possibilities:

- Command & Control unit
- Troop Transport
- Open
- Closed
- Munitions Transport (Armoured)
- Liquid Transport
- Mobile Hospital
- Refrigerated transport
- Flatbed
- Vehicle Transport

The Logistical Vehicle is better equipped than the Troop Transport Version, with a Radio/CD MP3 Player, Cruise Control and Airbags, amongst other things, and will be delivered with the Hydro-Pneumatic Vehicle System, opposed to the Troop Transport, which will be delivered with rigid axles, with the HPVS system optional.

HPVS: Hydro-Pneumatic Vehicle System

HPVS is a completely autonomous suspension system, which is operated by hydraulic cylinders instead of Air, which is usually used on truck suspensions. The cylinders of the system are connected to eachother on either side. The system monitors the actual sort of soil beneath it (or can be set by the driver), and it adapts to soil, so it can keep the vehicle comfortable at all times. The HPVS system is of the 3rd generation, which guarantees light and compact cylinders, which do not need to be serviced oftenly. Reality shows that the system can handle overload and will probably not need to be replaced before the truck itself.

The System stabilises each side of the vehicle individually. Because Crossbeams don’t need to be used for the suspension, weight can be kept low. The HPVS system offers advantages to the users:
- Better Driving behaviour
- Better in rough terrain
- Automatic Levelling
- Variable loading heights (more comfortable loading)
- More Stabilisation of the chassis

There are several other techniques used by HPVS:

Crosswise Leveling

The suspension keeps the wheels in contact with the ground, while the cab and load space will remain level. This means the vehicle can drive sideways on slopes more easily.

Vehicle Weight Indicator

From the Driver’s Position, a small monitor will show the actual weight of the vehicle, both in Tons and in Military Classes, so the Driver can check if he can pass bridges, roads, etcetera.

Automatic Roll stabiliser

This System will recognise situations where extra transverse support is needed, and the system will actively try to stop Vehicle Roll; which means the vehicle will stop leaning over in corners. This will also reduce tire wear, meaning less service to the vehicle.

Container lifting system

Since the VLT M5 is Modular, it will have to lift containers up it’s chassis quite often. Therefore, HPVS will assist the chassis by lowering the back a few centimetres, which means that there will be less stress on the rear axle, and the angle over which the container will have to be lifted will be reduced. The system automatically return to normal height as soon as the vehicle’s speed surpasses 5 km/h.

Electronic Vehicle Steering (EVS)

When EVS is installed and engaged, the truck will use extra axles to steer, up to 3 when mounted on an 8x8 or 10x8. This enables precision steering of the vehicle, so the truck can get out of tricky situations in a few moves. Due to the increased agility, long vehicles no longer will have problems with going around tight corners, and can safely head through a dense forest without having to make exceptionally tricky turns.

SensAxle +

In some cases, extra loading capacity is needed. Therefore, an extra axle can be added to the back or the front of the vehicle, allowing ten additional tons of load capacity. Optionally, the axle can be made a lifting axle.

The ‘B’ Version: Troop Transport

Close to the Frontline, areas might be too dangerous for the Logistical Vehicle, or the ‘A’ Version is simply too expensive to be destroyed on the frontline. Therefore, VLT has created the M5b, commonly known as Troop Transport. This vehicle has a rigid set-up, with an open loading space behind the cab, which can be covered with water-resistant cloth to protect from the weather, or to hide objects or men from sight. The cab is armoured to a Level B7, and the amount of glass has been cut in half, and can be further reduced by lowering the armour screens mounted on the truck. The vehicle is equipped with a bulbar, which can optionally be delivered with an extra lights set. However, The lighting can also be completely blinded or set to only deliver a small amount of light for frontline situations. This can be done by the flip of a switch inside the vehicle.

The B-version is made for reliability and toughness. Therefore, it comes with rigid axles and a manual gearbox. The vehicle has been kept as simple as possible, with options to a bare minimum. The vehicle should operate anywhere, anytime, even if service intervals are far apart. It will work, even with temperatures ranging from – 32 degrees Celsius to +50 Degrees Celsius, with bullets flying around it, and a muddy pool ahead.

To whom it may concern,

Recent operations have made clear the need for an upgraded logistics and general purpose medium truck, and as a result a number of Russkyan companies and firms are at work on indigenous designs and projects to fill this need. However the superlative VLT M5A and M5B are likely equal or superior designs, and as such a number of both models will be ordered for comparative trials and limited field use pending a possible full-scale order.

Therefore I have been authorized to place an order for the following vehicles and modules, all fitted with the VLT EM483 multifuel engine and of the 6x6 configuration.
M5A Series - 750 Trucks
Modules:
- Closed Module [No. 250]
- Flatbed Module [No. 100]
- Mobile Hospital Module [No. 75]
- Refrigerated Transport Module [No. 100]
- Liquid Transport Module [No. 200]
- Command Module [No. 25]
M5B Series - 250 Trucks

The appropriate funds have been designated and are awaiting only confirmation of your order for transfer to the appropriate accounts.
If possible the vehicles will be picked up by two "C6A" merchant vessels, the "Chornaiya Vodna IV" and "Red Horizon XI."

From the Desk of the Minister for Defence, The Googleistic Democracy of Googlewoop

To the Chief Executive Officer, VLT Automotive

Dear Sir,

The Defence Ministry of Googlewoop, in particular the budget committee wish to enquire whether any of your vehicles would be capable of towing an M777 howitzer over combat terrain. The M777 is a new (Real World) long range field gun designed to match the range and rate of fire and hence replace the M198 currently in service with the U.S. military in a lighter model. The gun weighs roughly 3 000 kg and is designed to be towed as a trailer.

If none of your vehicles fit this criteria, the budget committee is willing to consider financing the design and construction of a new model or buying licence to manufacture a VLT Automotive design.

Dear Sir,

The VLT M5 Military Truck, and most notably the 'a' version, will have no problems with towing a 3000 kg artillery piece. If required, the M5 can even tow an IFV or other relatively light vehicle. The Van Luxemburgian military has had no problems with towing their artillery pieces around, and have used the M5 for quite some time. We think that the M777 howitzer will be no problem for the truck's towing capabilities, and that both the 'a' and the 'b' versions will fulfill every requirement your nation's Defence Force can think of.

M5 Fire vehicle

The VLT M5 6x6
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b76/VanLuxemburg/e87ea312.jpg
An early testbed for the M5 Fire Vehicle: A Mercedes-Benz Axor 4x2

After several complaints from domestic fire services that they needed a fire vehicle that could fulfil their needs, VLT went to work with the VLT M5. The original version, a military truck, was completely modified to be a specialised fire vehicle that could fulfil the needs of the modern fire service. The personnel at VLT Custom first removed the complete cab of the vehicle, so that only the chassis remained to build on. On this, they rebuilt the vehicle, using a new concept for the Van Luxemburgian market, only utilised by several Fire Departments around the nation. The combination of a aerial ladder and a pumper vehicle makes it extremely versatile, and also a great alternative for Fire Departments who do not have the need or the manpower for the multiple vehicles that are combined into one here.

Installed on the chassis of the 6x6 M5 truck was an aerial ladder (skylift), on top of the storage compartments that were installed before. These includes all necessities for a firefighting vehicle, such as a variable (flexible) water tank that can take up to 3000 litres of water. The pump (a Pabst P6000) installed on the vehicle can take some 6000 litre/min, either from the vehicles water tank or an alternative water source (such as a fire hydrant or even a lake). Onboard the vehicle a One/Seven system has also been installed: Due to a water/foam compound, an extinguishing volume of about seven times the normal size can be achieved. This system (Pabst OS3500) can extinguish up to 3540 ltr/min, while only utilising 440 litres of water per minute at the same time.

The Aerial Ladder installed onboard can be remotely controlled and can reach heights of up to 30 metres. It can be used to put out fires from heights, or transport firemen to high-up places such as high-rise buildings. Installed on the basket is a Pabst WM1500 turret that can put out water at a rate of 1500 litres a minute, and can be controlled either by hand or by remote control. On the vehicle 3 light mounts have been made, two search lights have been mounted on the ladder basket and the front of the vehicle respectively, while a stronger light mast has been installed on the back of the vehicle. This mast can be highered for approximately 5 metres, in order to light the scene.

Inside the vehicle, the cab offers place for 9 crewmembers and their gear, including the driver and vehicle commander. The vehicle is equipped with an Emergency Vehicle Information System (EVIS), which can receive mission details, assist the commander in planning the mission, monitor the status of the crewmembers (and their breathing systems), and also has a Crash Recovery System that can show the commander all specifics of a vehicle, as well as how it can be cut open.

Walter Autotechnologie was set to work on the specifics of the lighting systems and sirens, and returned with the proposal to fit it with a low-profile LED-lightbar. LED Grille flashers are complemented by strobe flashers in the headlights, aswell as LED flashers on the front-facing side of the mirrors. On the back of the vehicle, LED flashers have also been placed, aswell as a traffic advisor to control traffic behind the vehicle.

Ofcourse, the vehicle is equipped with all the systems originally delivered on the M5. They include the advanced hydropneumatic suspension system HPVS, with all of the respective systems belonging to it. Due to the ground clearance and all-wheel drive, the M5 firetruck can also be used offroad or on bad road conditions.
