Zhyolatskan insurgency, a plea for aid

"United broadcasting news, bringing you reliable news from around the world!"

The camera swung around to the newscaster as the world, or probably more accurately a small part of it, was about to change.

"Hello, I'm Tom Wazcinzky, and tonight our top story. The war on Terror today takes a shift towards the north as recent elections in the small country Zhyolatska have given birth to a rise in militant activity from the terrorist organization, the ZASF. The ZASF is most known for it;'s activity in the Cypriot and zambistani insurgencies, however small of a role they played. However recently it's leaders have begun to spew fiery anti-state propaganda. They claim that the elections were rigged. These terrorists are incapable of providing evidence to back up their claims and have also begun a war.

This use of guerrilla warfare, bombings, and propaganda illustrates the ideals of these terrorists who fight to bring their country under the iron grip of communism. This has implications on the international level as the newly formed GUSN may step in and aid the terrorists int heir bloody insurgency. if this country were removed from international markets it's mineral wealth and production of iron and steel might be removed from world markets, having a serious detrimental effect on the economy.

Current, newly elected president Joseph Androvich has issued a plea to the international community. Wewill be switching over to the feed of the Vorisvotkya Parade where the president is expected to issue his statement."

*the military parade marches onas soldiers, tanks, flag bearers, party members, and all the like march down the streets of the capital in disciplines manner, all looking to the balcony where the president sits. Soon the cameras turn on him and he rises, preparing to give his speech,*

My people, My comrades, my fellows of the world. We are in a grave time. The socialists seek once more to drive us into communist rule, they seek to overthrow the government itself and establish an utter totalitarianism. These communists have also garnered support of the Islamic extremists. If they are allowed to continue their civil war, many lives will be lost in this violent conflict. I appeal to you, aid us, send your troops for our cause. Help us bring control to the country and deliver it from the Terrorists before the entire might of the GUSN steps in. I assure you,no man, woman, or child in Zhyolatska wants to live in a terrorist state, they want to live in a state where they are free to have state support in the economy, free to have the state's military and police to defend them against criminals, free to have the security they so deserve, free to have the freedom to live their lives without fear of political problems! help us, we beg you!"

with this the parade continues again and signs of the president are carried about and raised up by military marchers.

((OOC info:Basically what this is, is a rebellion, a revolution in the country, on one side you have the ZASF, and on the other you have ZNP.the media masks the issue so what is following is information for mostly OOC use

ZASF= Zhyolatskan Armed Social Front. This is composed of a variety of socialist groups as well as the Turkish Liberation Front, which fights for better rights for the turkish minority. The most predominant socialists in the organization are the Makhnovachinas. who also have been elected to head the union. They are a Primarily Makhnovist group, meaning they are anarcho-communists who follow the ideals of Kropotkin, Makhno, and Bakunin. they have seen the horrors of bolshevism and rally against such grave errors. What has driven them to begin a violent revolution as opposed to the previously passive one is the rigged election of the ZNP to office.

ZASF collage- key, Man with hat and short beard in bottom left hand corner is Sacha Pushenko, an ethnic Chechen and ZASF diplomatic representative and public relations elect. man with beret and long beard is Sergei Vasseily, a russian and ex soviet officer, military elect. Finally the man in the top right hand corner is the most important, the enigmatic educated man considered to be the leader. Illyusha Verkhotsov, pure blooded Ukrainian and educated Political theorist.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v516/quantumf8/ZASFcollage.jpg

ZNP= Zhyolatskan Nationalist Party= the current ruling party, Fascist and Militarist. They seek to open foreign relations, initiate state control and crack down on public security issues by enforcing the law with secret police, soldiers patrolling streets, the like. the seek for the state to become the ultimateauthority.

Media spin on ZNP: The media spins them as a militaristic, though benevolent presidential party with patriotic values, while they portray the ZASF as neo-Bolshevist terrorists similar to the RAF and casting the Turkish Liberation Front as Islamic extremists.

*an internationally broadcasted plea from ZNP president Joseph Androvich*
Brothers, all ready you have shown me support, I ask you continue to send aid. The conflict here has escalated to heights we had not thought possible. Someone has supplied the insurgency with heavy armor, and we now see the conflict escalated into total war.

We ask any nations willing to send military or economic aid.

many of our people are fleeing the country, to wait until the conflict cools down, I pray you help me in squashing these communist terrorists!we fought for freedom from russia before... let us remain ever free of Stalin's Iron Curtain!

*consequently, the ZASF also makes a broadcast, on a newly captured international news station. Illyusha Verkhotsov speaks on a podium to news casters in the city square of Orovost*

Brothers, Sisters, Countrymen, The future is bright indeed. A kind and benevolent power has given us five hundred tanks of unprecedented might. This means then, that we must become increasingly violent. It is regrettable that we have come to this, but the fascists, no, the capitalists even, have oppressed us for far too long.

you ask, why must we become violent, why must we wage war on our own brothers? This is a sad thing indeed, but it is necessary for any change. Time has proven to us again and again that no change will occur from inaction, we must rise up and take our own action!

How shall we take action? We must learn from the guerrillas of before. We must take heed of their Success, as well as the success of the capitalists. we must take control of the masses of the dispossessed and disenfranchised. we must take to the galvanization of the people, the galvanization of a national spirit. We must make preparations for the difficult task yet to come, wemust galvanize the people to prepare for the brutal, and violent opression yet to come. We must resist this wholly..

It is as el Che said... "Hate as a factor in the struggle, intransigent hatred for the enemy that takes one beyond the natural limitations of a human being and converts one into an effective, violent, selective, cold killing machine. Our soldiers must be like that; a people without hate cannot triumph over a brutal enemy." We must take heed of his words, and bring ourselves to take direct action, to fight for freedom.

It is important for us to resist. For if we do not we shall see a rape of our people. We will see the Fascists enforce a state run system, where even the smallest privacy is invaded upon. we will see people forced into labor. This forcing of labor is already happening with the advent of globalization, another threat we must resist. While the international economy is something to be aware of, and delivers an economic boon to people, we must remember that it gives power to the corporation, not the people.

This only serves to further enslave the populace. By binding them into a globalized economy we can see how the corporation comes down upon the people to oppress them. To force them to sell their labor for money. their own capability to labor... a shame. This is why we see such rampant poverty int he world. All the money is held by those in command of the means of production. Not the laborers.

Those who work these days seem to be paid an amount inverse to the proportion of work done. The idle rich maintain their superiority while the poor are trod upon. We must work to do away with this. To allow such an inequality to prevail among our people is something we must become aware of, something we must take action against.

We have seen before how we have been oppressed, we have been kept our of elections, the turks have been beaten on the streets, the poor are made to take jobs without any advancement. This is why we must ensure our democracy becomes just that. A democracy. I ask you then, Comrades of the world. Rise up!

Rise up ye downtrodden, Ye disenfranchised, Ye Disillusioned and dispossessed! Rise up and take ye arms in the name of freedom. Bring about a true revolution for freedom and democracy! Together we can cast down our oppressors, we can free ourselves from our chains. The next Epoch is upon us, waits for naught save our will to reach it. we must show that will. we must remove the Imperialists. Fight for revolution! Fight for socialism, Nay, FIGHT FOR FREEDOM!

*with that, Illyusha Verkhotsov ends his short speech to a roaring crowd, and the conflict continues.*

45 Northern Baltic Akula Class submarines were sent to Zhyolatskan in order to disrupt enemy arms shipments. 20 Amur 1850 Class Submarines were also sent with instructors to the resistence movement in Zhyolatskan in order to train them how to operate the submarines.

Low-flying cargo planes escorted by Mig-29 fighters were sent to drop the following items to the resistence:
900 Sa-18's
900 RPK-74's
600 Dragunov SVD's
500 RPG-29's
650 Type 87 82mm Mortar's
450 At-7's

Meanwhile, 26 Tu-160, 35 Tu-22M, and 50 Su-37 escort fighters flew towerds the carrier group. Once in range, the low flying Tu-160s and Tu-22Ms would fire their full load of long range anti-shipping missiles against the carrier group. The Su-37s would fight any fighters that would attack the bombers, but will not go to the carrier group and engage the fighters near the carrier.

Aegean Sea

Four submarines were sailing the seas, two at snorkel depth, the others just below them. The lower ones were Typhoon-class, one was loaded with nuclear missiles, the other was a cargo ship. They were to meet up with the Northern Baltic Submariners.

The snorkel depth ships moved to AIP and began to dive. Along with the care package from the Northern Baltic, there was a care package from the Mafia. Their 533mm Torpedoes were loaded with AK-47s with folding stocks. Hundreds of them, thousands of them, filling every last space on the submarine.

Soon, soon.

ZHYOLATSKAN NATIONAL PARTY

GLORY TO VICTORY! GLORY TO ZHYOLATSKA!

*President Joseph Androvich steps forward on a pedestal to give a speech during a Fascist Rally in Zaporizhzhya*

All within the state, nothing outside the state, nothing against the state! Glory to victory, and glory to Zhyolatska!

Komrades! Today we face a NEW hour! Today we stand firm in the face of a new world! We have allies from all corners of the earth ready to stand with us in our glorious struggle!

Today, A new order will seize the country, today, we take this petty struggle, and we elevate it into war! These Communists seek to destroy the very foundation of order, and plunge us into a new dark age, they seek to destroy us through false promises, but no more! Today we shall show them what organized people can do!

We will no longer pay heed to their petty acts of terror, we will no longer pander to ideas of petty skirmishes, if they dare kill true-blooded zhyolatskans, then we shall show them what war is!

You may have worries about the economy? fear not! do not touch even a single Karbovanet in your purses! the state is in control of our economy totally! we have nearly tripled our steel and iron production, and mobilized our spare factories for production of military equipment, none here shall be made to pay for this, for this is the genius of our Management.

As We speak, our troops march across the lines, flags held high, hard in their hearts. They will not count days, nights, or hours, they shall only count the number of vile, brutalized insurgents they kill! This is our goal! this is our Plan! to kill, destroy, eradicate all traces of those who would again seek to enslave our people! No more Bolsheviks! No more Tsars! No more ZASF! Only the state! only the ZNP!

*The president continues his fiery speech well into the rally, garnering countless cheers of support as his troops begin to mercilessly execute any prisoners of war and wage a potent war. On the matter of the economy, the president was correct, all prisoners in the penal had been forced into labor, and labor camps had been built in the south eastern part of the country, using the turkish citizens as practical slaves.

While the rally continues, Partisans break the stillness of the night in the crimean. They begin by opening fire on the city of skoya by launching some 14 Qassam rockets into the city, taking out many buildings as it rains fire. The hell being unleashed as partisans charge in with PPS 40s, Leafistani CFRs, And AK-47s blazing seems almost incomparable to the hellfire being spewed from the president's mouth at his rally. His speeches motivate the people into thinking that theirs is the side fighting for freedom, into ignoring the turkish labor camps and wars of genocide on the turks.

The President also makes note of sending resources to his allies, to thank them for their military aid, while condemning all socialists worldwide. meanwhile on the Black sea....*

"Admiral! we have reports of incoming subs! and further reports that partisans have stolen a sub!" Said Lt. Kolyakov ZNN (Zhyolatskan national navy)

Deep within the CCB (Central Command Building), Commander Halys Reisschart glances over the latest intelligence briefings from Zhyolatska.

"Christ." he mutters. "Step on the damn commies in one place and they pop up in two more."

He calls in a staffer and orders him to refer the matter to the remainder of the Central Command brass. While New Manth currently had large operational commitments in other parts of the world, they might be able to offer Zhyolatska some materiel and logistical aid. And without deploying troops, there would be no need to seek the approval of the Corporate Council.

And if the Zhylotskan government comes out on top, Zhylotskan steel could prove a welcome aid to New Manth's current efforts at expanding its navy.

Soon a highly classified message goes out to the ZNP government.

TO: ZNP
FROM: New Manthian Central Command

In light of the current situation, New Manth is prepared to offer the Zhylotskan government access to New Manthian war materiel at a heavily discounted rate. We understand that you're having a particular problem with rebel heavy armor, and are prepared to offer two hundred shoulder-fired antitank missiles as a pledge of goodwill. Should you accept we've made arrangements for a neutral freighter to drop off the equipment within 48 hours.

Please be advised that as a term of acceptance, we require that for the time being you not discuss the source of this weaponry.

We await your reply,
The Dominion of New Manth.

Aegean Sea

The Amur's were close to returning via Istanbul and one of them sent in a hydrophone call.

Capitan Pauline Orilie answered the phone with trepidation. She knew what was coming.

The Amur class at snorkel depth recorded a burst transmission on Mafia frequencies. When decoded it was an order to fire, and the relevant codes were being transmitted.

She hung up the phone and walked toward the front of the submarine to the control center. She typed in the code into the ancient machine which sounded as if it used an IBM Model M keyboar...Oh wait.

She looked at the faded IBM logo on the corner, a crew member watched her stare. She thought that it was a Model M, an irresponsible decision for a submarine, she would call it in once at launch depth. She finished the code and waited. A red LED became green; the code was accepted.

The submarine rose to launch depth, its mast breaching the waves and a little packet burst to ask for coordinates. They were sent nearly instantaneously. She typed them in and watched as another red LED went to green. She held the key in her hand, and turned it in its place.

A single R-39 Strategic SLBM left the Typhoon and it began to dive to avoid being detected. It would meet up with the Amur's about 120 kilometers from Gibraltar if all went well.

On the warhead were 3 Kraven manufactured 35 kiloton cobalt salted, fission devices. They were all targeted toward the rally going on at that moment. And at the president, a strike ordered by someone with a vested interest in this conflict, someone who was willing to pay millions.

God help all those in the city who were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Kraven salted weapons spread deadly gamma radiation at a much higher rate, and was designed with increasing the yield of radioactive fallout and its duration.

Like a star. That was the thought on the minds of everyone in Zhyolatska. The blast was visible everywhere in the country. The president had been evacuated and the airforce had intercepted the bomb.. but it was too late... the president was alive.. but maps would need to be redrawn without Zaporizhzhya on the map.

It no longer existed

The nuclear attack had been devastating, most of the city was leveled, millions of civilians were left dead from the initial blast... but the Fascist party had lost almost the entirety if it's command structure and almost all troops in the city were dead.

The president had a resolution, he would replace his staff with whatever leftover soviets still were around, hoping to not have to draw upon green recruits to lead. He would crack down on those damned commies, and he would make them pay. He would open more labor camps, he would shift entire turkish communities solely for the production of arms and steel, but worst among these atrocities, he would broadcast the nuclear attack, and make sure the loss of life was made into an act of genocide....

President Androvich would send a request to New Manth, along with 500 tons of steel, he would ask them for actual military aid. Yes, he would make the commies pay...

His reply to Zeara would be cold.

"My dear friend, You offer me aid only if I exhaust my forces even more? you impose the condition upon me that I allow these communists the power to have a say in this country? Need I remind you my people have suffered enough under the bolshevist iron-curtain? Need I remind of the great purges of stalin? the forced collectivization of farms? No, Our people have suffered enough. If you still think these scum can be allowed to perpetuate I would encourage you to keep up with the news See the horrible crimes they commit, their slaughter of civilians.
I will not agree to your terms of submission to those who would destroy our liberty and freedom!"

the news became alive that night. The story was too good to be true, an unknown country exploding into civil war. worldwide attention being shifted onto the country. And now this petty war had become a Nuclear war.

Broadcasts lit up with the president's urgent plea.
"Free citizen's of the world. I speak to you now with only the heaviest of hearts. Today an irreparable loss of human life has occurred, the large city of Zaporizhzhya has been attacked with a nuclear weapon. we estimate somewhere between three and four million lives were lost in the initial blast. we have no idea who has done such. The attack was launched from rogue subs. We believe them to belong to the Cypriot socialists or the ZASF Cyprus branch. However we also fear that the GUSN has decided to take interest in our country. I will not allow myself to see my glorious country fall under the rule of soviets again. We will retain our own independence even if it means we must fight to the last. We are incredulously thankful for all the international aid we have received, and we now ask, regrettably, for more.

The heart of our command structure has been decimated, and it is with the utmost sadness that I must ask that nations continue to show a vested interest. Nuclear weapons have already been used, what next?

I would like to thank, those brave nations who have given us aid, your commitment to freedom from the communists and freedom from oppression. to each national leader who has helped us we have sent an Iron Cross, our highest honor. know that for your heroic actions we will remain free all the longer."

"REJOICE!! REJOICE!

KOMRADES! I praise you all!"

Began Illyusha Verkhotsov, raising a flagon of beer to a more than crowded city square in Ghozav. Man and woman stood together. Turk, Cossak, Slav, Jew, all stood together. Most adults there were in impromptu uniforms wielding guns or had other tokens showing that they were partisan troops. They now officially declared themselves independent, they now had a flag to rally around!

in Ghozav the partisans, returned from fighting for a bit, while others had gone out, celebrated their victories with Vodka and warm meals, holding a grand party int he city square. Ghozav was now the Capitol of the Independent states of Zhyolatska.

Men woman and child all across the new country engaged in celebration when they could, traditional dances littered the cities as ethnicities and cultures blended together to celebrate their freedoms.

"Komrades, Today is a new dawn, today we find ourselves liberated, we shall deny any connection to those oppressive fascists! we are this much closer to the liberation of our country. We thank our allies for their support, and while we condemn the loss of life in Zaporizhzhya, we must remember it was a city wholly supportive of the fascists! It was a city wholly of militarists! We now have the capability to take advantage of the lack of command we must push to the east and free our Turkish brothers!......

TO LIFE! LAND! LIBERTY!"

The very next day an explosion of action occurred. Partisans pushed into the east and began to attack labor camps while too slow to prevent the first 200 tons of steel being shipped to new manth, they were swift enough to stop the remaining 300 tons. Their troops now armed like an actual army pushed the ZNP out of Mariupol and the region, back north to Donets'k.

It was a grim day for the ZNP as the terrorists bombs and destroyed their factories, took Skoya with the aid of rockets and bombs, took naval control of the sea of Azov with a new navy, and threatened to take control of Zhyolatskan black sea territory. Partisans pushed into the eastern territory, guns a blazing, liberating turkish POWs and decimating the military there in a surprise guerrilla siege.

further north of the Zaporizhzyan massacre, ZASF forces begin the bombing of the capital Vorisvotkya with ariel bombs and land based man made bombs.

A new wave of terror sweeps the country as the ZASF insurgents proceed to engage in bombings, hit and run attacks, and asymmetrical warfare with their turkish and other socialist allies. The structure of events seems to very much so recall the French revolution. any foreign troops caught are executed on capture for aiding the Fascists, whereas any who surrender before fighting are expatriated and made into partisan forces.

"send two Akula class subs to hunt down the stolen sub, and notify our cruisers to be ready on standby incase these reports of incoming subs are accurate" Said Admiral Oprastin

The Amurs had regrouped with the Typhoon and began their mission. The nuclear Typhoon would leave, and the Amurs would join up with a shorter range Amur 1450 and begin subhunting operations. A cargo Typhoon would remain because of its specialized electronic warfare equipment.

Another shorter range rocket left the cargo Typhoon and soared into the Black Sea, it was an active ping SONAR buoy, and it would light up any subs in the area.

Mafia command had given the order when the President made his speech after the nuclear bombing. Consolation Prize.

The Amur's were reaching Istanbul, they moved to AIP depth and started the hunt.

Commander Halys Reisschart glances over the top brass gathered deep beneath the Central Command Building. Besides himself and two other Commanders representing the Denomination of Strategy, there are also representatives from the Denominations of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, as well as the Denomination of Morale and the Departments of Internal Security and Foreign Intelligence. No doubt as soon asthe recent news hits the Manthian airwaves the Corporate Council will get itself involved, but for now, the important decisions wil be made here.

Reisschart clears his throat and starts off.

"As I'm sure you are all aware a government or individual unknown has recently detonated a nuclear device over Zaporizhyzha. Reports are still extremely spotty, but... it looks like we may need to redraw our maps. The Zhyolatskan government has issued a plea for assistance. It looks like they will need it. The government must have taken heavy losses, and the situation on the ground is looking bad for them unless they get some support.

Gentlemen, we need to respond to this ASAP. A revolution in a minor country is something we can handle covertly; nuclear war is not."

The representative from the Department of Internal Security interjects.

"What do you propose, Commander? Surely we need to look to our own defense first - if someone is willing to drop a warhead on Zhyolatska, who says they won't do the same to anyone who intervenes on behalf of the government?"

"A valid question, Commander. We can trust our missile defense systems only so far, and we will need to defend our own shores. What does the Navy say?"

The Navy's Acting Rear Admiral, Haban Ronessem, quickly confers with a staffer before replying.

"In addition to the Second Fleet currently operating in Hamilayan waters, we have five Fleets currently engaged in home defense or in port. Four are ready to aid home defense, while the Third Fleet is in the midst of resupply after our counterterrorism operations in the Isles. They'll be ready to sail again in six to eight hours."

"Make it six, Admiral. So what does that leave us?"

"We'll need most of what we've got to patrol our home waters if we expect to keep them airtight. We can spare maybe one Fleet to intervene in Zhyolatska, but any more would compromise our home defenses."

"Make it one, then, and attach the Belleropheron. It may be beneficial to have a nuclear presence of our own in the region, in case whoever was responsible for this gets any more ideas."

"Consider it done, Commander. But what about the Council?"

"We move without their authority for now. It won't be a problem. When they hear about this I'm betting half the Council will want a full-scale invasion. They'll certainly be willing to authorize an intervention."

"Sounds like a plan, then. When shall we move out?"

"Use the Third Fleet. We'll need ground troops, and we can use the Third's downtime to kit out a peacekeeping force. We have the 22nd Division on alert already, so mobilization time shouldn't be a huge problem."

"Six hours, then. I'll arrange for transports and air cover for the Fleet."

"Great. Send President Androvich a message, let him know we received his request and that we are committed to help him punish whoever was responsible for this. Let the Council deal with releasing a statement for the international community."

The important decisions made, the talk turns to other matters: logistics and support for the peacekeeping force, the state of New Manth's own nuclear deterrent arsenal (now on high alert), and preparations for defending the homeland from any similar strike. At the suggestion of the Denomination of Morale, New Manth reroutes an unmanned spy drone to take close-up pictures of the smoking city ruins. Soon New Manthian newspapers and televisions are filled with pictures of the devastation, accompanied by a myriad of headlines: "Communist Revolutionaries Nuke Their Own People - Millions Presumed Dead, Zhyolatskan President Rumored to Survive Deadly Nuclear Assault, Mass Murder in Zaporizhyzha - City Wiped Off the Map, and Commies Show True Colors are just a few examples of the headlines plastered across front pages throughout the nation.

35 miles off of New Manth, a submerged modified Oscar Class submarine launched a small, remote control midget submarine. The midget submarine would be traveling slow and deep, as to avoid detection, but it should reach it's target in about 9 hours. It would sneak into the harbor and its atomic device, which it carried, would explode. Northern Baltic Intel had used satellites to watch the troop movements after the "Communist Revolutionaries Nuke Their Own People" headlines started showing up.

Meanwhile, a NBN(Northern Baltic Navy) Battlefleet entered the now heavily watched Strait of Gibraltar with 3 Ajax Class Battleships, 5 Krivak III Class, and 10 Longboat Class. They were also being trailed by 20 Amur Class Submarines which they would hand over to the rebel forces. They were escorting a number of heavy troop ships which would bring the NBPG(Northern Baltic People's Guard) 3rd Army into battle alongside their Socialist Brothers. 300 Type 99 tanks would provide support for the 3rd army. The ships also carried a large amount of munitions for the resistence and about 300,000 An-94's with GP-30 Underbarrel grenade launchers.

A satellite phone call arrived for their Naval Headquarters. It was from a man who just asked to be called Jones.

"Job is complete, we await our money. Though there is a complication. It appears the President made it."

"We'll block the Strait of Gibraltar with more subs if you want. It will cost extra, about $1.7 million per sub to block the damn thing."

"Electronically via our usual channels will suffice."

The line went dead, permanently. The General Resources Inc. satellite they hijacked had went into silent mode when their hackers activated it. With luck, GR would have to spent a week getting the damn thing live again. By then, the call would have been erased from its RAM to make room for other pressing matters. Such as Van Allen belt activity.

7 Amur 1450 class submarines were nearing the Strait, along with 3 Kilo-class which had refueled from a Universal Exports Oil Tanker leaving a platform in the Northern Atlantic.

They would stay for as long as they could, using a Moroccan contact to get fuel for the submarines. Meanwhile the Typhoon cargo stayed nearby, with its two escorts, waiting for something.

The midget sub's tiny size and slow speed allows it to sneak past the outer line of sonar emplacements and patrolling ships, despite the majority of the New Manthian navy being on high alert looking for just such a thing. Whether it will be able to continue to evade detection for the full nine-hour journey is still up in the air. Its 'parent' sub, however, one of the largest attack subs in the world, is not so lucky. Shortly after launching the minisub, it pings on the SONAR of a patrolling NHAS-8 antisubmarine helicopter operating off the destroyer Abydos, which immediately sounds the alarm. At Threat Level 2, the current level, naval procedure calls for unidentified craft to be given a singe chance to identify itself, on the off chance that it is a friendly or neutral craft. A transmission quickly goes out.

"Unidentified craft, you are operating within Manthian waters and within the Coastal Safe Zone. Surface and identify yourself immediately."

OOC: Where are you aiming this sub? A civilian port or a naval yard? The naval yards are pretty closely watched (especially now that New Manth is on 'red alert') and would probably be quite difficult to sneak into even for a minisub. A civilian port would be easier, but they contain few if any direct military assets. Just Coast Guard and stuff.

New Manth, the capital, is inland (it's real-world Cairo, renamed by the New Manthians), so I'm afraid that's not reachable ;)

When The Northern Baltic purchased the Ion Exciter satellites from Leafanistan, it was at first looked at to be a pointless investment. Little did the Military Finance Department know how handy this weapon would be today. The giant satellite was aimed at the Abydos and it fired. As soon as it fired, the submarine surfaced and fired 2 AA Missiles 3 seconds apart at the helicopter. The submarine then resubmerged and headed home.

Meanwhile, the GPS guided midget submarine moved slowely towerds the military port where the 3rd Fleet was. Even if the midget submarine was found and destroyed, the explosion from the atom bomb the midget submarine carried should be more then enough to render the entire harbor, and the 3rd fleet, useless.

5,000 ML-20 152mm Guns

90,000 AEK-971
This shipment was being heavily escorted and submarines laid a web around the fleet to assure no ship could or would dare to attack the ships.

Aboard the Abydos, an operator watches nervously as the small red dot representing the unknown contact rises towards the surface. He contacts the bridge.

"Captain, unknown sub is surfacing but has not replied to our hail, sir. Shall we fire?"

"Negative. They are complying with our request to surface. Seems likely that they are having communication problems. We'll escort them out of New Manthian territory. Tell the pilot to keep alert, though."

The helicopter pilot arms his antisub torpedoes, just in case... He really wasn't expecting to use them though. New Manth was not at war with any nation and the unknown submarine was surfacing as requested. He watches as the tower breaks water, followed by the rest of the sub.

"This is H2-7 on patrol to Abydos. Unknown sub has surfaced as requested. It's an Oscar... don't see any national markers, but.. SHIT! Missil-"

The unlucky pilot reaches for the trigger an instant too late, and the first missile slams into the helicopter before it has a chance to fire its own weapons. The explosion scatters debris over a wide area and sends the flaming hulk of the chopper into the sea. The transmission to the Abydos dissolves in a burst of static.

"H2-7, come in! Shit! Get me the br-"
And that's when a huge explosion rocks the Abydos, tearing the ship's stern completely off and obliterating the helicopter pads and their command station. When the smoke and flames begin to clear a few moments later, the Abydos has been reduced to a listing hulk, without engines, rudder or anything but emergency power. Fire still rages in what's left of the rear half of the ship.

The Abydos's captain picks himself up and stares around in disbelief as about six different alarms screech out in unison. Shaking himself out of it, he grabs the ship's communications officer and hauls the man to his feet. Emergency power would provide lights, pumps, fire control and communications, and not much else.

"Get the Navy out here now!"

"Sir, we might get help on civilian emergency channels... we're operating some distance from the nearest friendly ship."

The captain hesitates briefly, but the sound of screeching metal as the Abydos begins to shift underneath them makes up his mind.

"Fine, do it! We'll have lost most of the boats which were stored in the stern... Just make it quick! And get men on the pumps and fire control!"

Still somewhat dazed, the young officer complies.

A transmission marked for the USSNB Naval Commander bounced off a defunct PiCon Satellite. Its solar cells barely churning out enough juice to amplify and relay. PiCon mission control would find the incident amusing and wonder why it wasn't preserved in the memory buffer.

"Enemy Destroyer Eliminated. Snow Crash 7 reporting in major activity in a nearby port. Seems like a rescue operation. It will take them well over 30 minutes to respond. Aircraft maybe not so much. We are deploying the IMS Simulacrum to retrieve and exterminate. Keep an eye for enemy aircraft. We do have 9K37M's on board but we are still worried."

As the ship listed, a ray of hope beamed out. It was the conning tower of a much larger submarine, a Typhoon. It hauled up the white flag and began turning toward the striken crewmen. It extended another slender pole from its tower that unfolded into a satellite dish. A flat panel slid off the side of the conning tower on both sides and lifted itself.

Then men started appearing on top. They were holding ropes, a few were medics, some were guards armed with M32 LMGs. A few had SR-762s.

They were calling out, throwing lines, dragging people on deck and taking them down below.

OOC: You'll have to forgive my sailors if after what just happened they are slightly suspicious of submarines which pop up inside their national waters without identifying themselves or giving warning. Also there aren't more than a few living men in the water (as you'd have to be damn lucky to be close enough to the explosion to be blown off the ship, and yet still survive and be able to swim).

The Abydos's communications officer is working overtime fielding transmissions both inbound and outbound, and simultaneously explaining the situation to the Abydos's regional Naval Command headquarters.

"Yes, Commander. The men who were on deck at the time are describing something like a massive lightning bolt, nevermind that the sky is clear blue... Yes Commander, that's right. No, we're not about to sink this minute, but she's going down soon, sir. Pumps can only do so much. Yes, sir, we have wounded on board... no, weapons targeting systems appear to be all offline except for some of the smaller arrays. Sorry sir."

"Captain! Look! Rescue!"

The Abydos's captain squints at the approaching sub, but his expression is not exactly the joyful relief one might expect.

"Well," he says,

"I don't mean to look a gift horse in the mouth, but answer me a question, officer. If I told you that two submarines happened to both be tresspassing in New Manthian national waters without seeking permission, in the same area at the same time, and that after an attack from the first submarine the second one just happened to be close enough to respond to our distress call within minutes, yet despite knowing, I presume, from the distress call that we have active communications, chose to make no attempt to contact us or otherwise identify itself and appeared..."

The Captain squints at the sub. He couldn't be quite sure yet, but he didn't see any.

"...appeared to be, like the first, showing no national flag or identifying markers otherwise, what would you say, sir, were the odds that it was just a coincidence?"

"Well... when you put it that way, Captain..."

"My thoughts exactly. Which is why you're going to contact the Navy and request helicopter backup."

"Yes sir. They've already dispatched choppers to look for that sub that came up earlier, though by now it's probably running deep. I can request a few of those. Should be here in minutes; they're already halfway to where we lost contact with H2-7."

"You do that. Try and get a transport chopper too. Reports coming in from the rear deck indicate we've got some seriously injured men back there. And hail the sub while you're at it. See if you can find out who our mysterious guests are."

"Yes sir!"

Meanwhile beneath them the hulk of the Abydos continues to creak and groan.

OOC: By the way I haven't forgotten about that bomb-carrying minisub. I will get to it in a bit, but for now, it is still in transit.

New Manthian Central Command is rarely as active as it is right now. As soon as word of the attack on the Abydos arrives, the armed forces alert level is raised to 1. Manthian forces at this level are no longer procedurally obligated to hail a suspected enemy vessel before firing - any more unknown contacts the Navy picked up will find that they, unlike the first attacker, will be unable to take advantage of Manthian adherence to peacetime rules of engagement. Besides coordinating the homeland defenses on high alert and overseeing the Manthian nuclear deterrent arsenal, Central Command staffers are also sending out briefings to Corporate Council members and the embassies of a few of New Manth's closer allies, appraising them of the situation as it develops.

And then there is still the matter of figuring out who was attacking them. Analysts from the Denomination of Military Intelligence are combing through satellite and ground surveillance data already... with a ten-second long burst of lightning stretching all the way from orbit to sea level, something has to have picked it up.

And indeed a few minutes later, Commander Reisschart receives a call.

"Commander, this is Qusay here. The boys think they've got something. Several of our Satlink units which were assigned to the Mediterranean picked up the discharge. We're calculating points of probable origin now, and we've got Satlink control standing by. We'll let you know when we get something solid."

"Acknowledged, Commander. Well there you have it, gentlemen. It is time to start preparing for a potential response. At the very least, we are looking at a nation with access to space-based weaponry and nuclear-powered submarines. We still are in the dark as to why they might be attacking us. Our best guess is that it is related to the Zhyolatskan situation, but it could also be a preemptive strike due to our entry into ACTO or a retaliation against the Hamilayan peacekeeping operations. or even preparation for a war of conquest. Until we know the source, however, we must prepare to defend New Manth against further attacks."

One of the older men at the table, a frail but forceful Commander from the Denomination of the Air Force, speaks up first.

"Well, sir, whoever is responsible for this may be the same as carried out the nuclear attack over Zhyolatska. If so, they have shown their willingness to use nuclear weapons in a first strike role. I suggest New Manth be prepared to do the same."

Reisschart shakes his head.

"New Manthian policy on the use of nuclear weapons has been made clear both to this Council and to the world. Our arsenal is a deterrent, not a first strike weapon, and will only be used in the event of nuclear attack against New Manth."

"But Commander Reisschart, we have already seen an unprovoked nuclear attacks just a short time ago against Zhyolatska! We cannot expose New Manth to the same-"

"I believe I have made my position clear on this issue. New Manth will not accept the shame and stigma of initiating a nuclear war. That is set in stone, Commander."

"Very well, then... what do you suggest we do?"

"If and when we identify our attacker, we punish him by conventional means. If necessary, we call upon allies for support. But until we have more information, it is this Denomination's directive that we order the mobilization of the Second and Third Corps and begin the process of calling up the reserves. I trust the Third Fleet is still on schedule?"

"Yes. We may need to reconsider committing so many troops to Zhyolatska, though."

"We shall see about that when more information is in our hands. Until then, continue with preparations. We will want as many ships as we can get on the water in any case."

The Captain looked through the periscope and saw the men not really responding well. He rubbed his chin, and thought about his enemy. They were smart, but probably not smart enough, or at least aware enough of what was happening. He rifled through a nearby box, marked 'Middle East' and took out an Icovir Flag, the successor to the Saudi Empire.

It was drawn up, and he hailed the sinking ship.

"Attention stricken vessel, we are a covert military transport from the Kingdom of Icovir. We are on a return mission from business in the Atlantic."

The men on top were looking around. A few men hid behind the conning tower with Stinger missiles. Just in case.

IMS Simulation

This was one of dozens of ships. Satellite link ups, proxies around the world in neutral countries. The power of the Internet was amazing. Amy Wong sat on the ship, nibbling on a piece of bread with a hazelnut spread. A filtered cigarette burned on an ashtray, filling the room with fragrant smoke. Suddenly the screen in front of her went dark. She slapped the side, a stray thought about the P/NP problem flew through her mind, and suddenly the computer came online to a new screen.

She stared a bit as text appeared. SNOW CRASH PROTOCOL ACTIVE. CRASH TARGET SPECIFIED.

She shoved the bread into her mouth, and pulled the ashtray closer. The Captain came down, soaked wet from the salt spray. She raised her arm and began typing. The higher-ups demanded that she and hundreds of others similar crackers get to work. She was to break into the New Manth government computer network, shut down whatever she could and insert a virus known as 'Snow Crash' into the system. It was simple and disguised itself as a driver update. It would cause a major graphics driver failure, and refuse to remove itself. It would cause a 'snow crash' or the electron beam to malfunction, spraying random garbage onto a computer screen, rendering it invisible. After that, she could get in and begin slamming them with more virulent processes.

She was tasked with disrupting GPS receiver decoders, by turning their internal clocks to random speed ups and slow downs, setting their forces off course.

She began typing, and threw a handshake protocol at the New Manth computer system. It disguised itself as a friendly packet, but it was coded to immediately paralyze the system, sending a massive stream of requests, slowing down the server enough for her to find out how to get in. Meanwhile, hundreds of other similar attacks were happening, from all over the world, based either at home, or on ships like these. A few of them were only 13-14 year old boys tooling around in their barracks, they were to attack minor things like government homepages, local weather feeds, and basic communications.

Die Boerstaat Region

The DBRA (Die Boerstaat Regional Authority), was turning a blind eye. Cargo ships left, and they were carrying hundreds of landing craft, and soldiers. And they were headed straight for New Manth. A tiny army to assault them, and to begin landing operations from the Red Sea.

OOC: Couple things. One, most of the New Manthian governmental network uses LCDs, especially the military and law enforcement which love to play with new and expensive toys (and the corporations love to supply them! ;) ). You'll mostly find older, cheaper stuff in less well funded branches of government, like Public Transportation ;)
Two, (for my own edification, since it seems interesting and I know jack about computer programming), why would screwing up the display make it easier to hack into the hard drive, and if you can hack into the computer in the first place why bother messing up the monitor instead of just going for the good stuff? After all, antivirus protection will be on the hard drives.
Three, New Manthian government websites are available in English, French and Arabic, but government computers themselves are programmed for Arabic only and files, folders etc will all be labeled in Arabic. Obviously wouldn't be a problem to a hacker who knew Arabic, but to one who didn't it might cause some problems.

"Attention stricken vessel, we are a covert military transport from the Kingdom of Icovir. We are on a return mission from business in the Atlantic."

The Captain feels somewhat relieved as the sub trots out an Icovir flag... Not relieved enough to call off the planned helicopter support, certainly, especially considering it would arrive any moment now anyway. But certainly relieved enough to shelve the idea of opening up the ship's personal arms locker and distributing rifles and shoulder-launched missiles to the crew. And in any case it would do no good to let on any misgivings he still had. Between the water seeping into the hull and the fires creeping dangerously close to the rear magazine, the Captain was willing to overlook a little in the name of rescue. He picks up the transmitter to reply, in perfect Arabic rather than his somewhat formal English.

"Ah, our neighbors and friends! And to think you had me addressing you in English like any foreigner, rather than our mother tongue! How disrespectful! You should have said something sooner!
Anyway, come on up alongside and we can get off this wreck before it goes to the bottom for good."

A few miles away, four NHAS-8 helicopters, the same make as the one destroyed earlier, are closing in on the Abydos. A minute or so behind them come two transport helicopters, called up in order to carry those in need of immediate medical attention to military hospitals back on the mainland.

The Red Sea

A ship attempting to pass into the Red Sea would receive quite a bit of attention right now from the Manthian navy. Elements of the Fourth Fleet patrol the Gulf of Aden, inspecting ships inbound to Suez - a smaller number than usual, as the Canal is by necessity closed during a DEFCON 1 threat level. Most merchantmen are detouring around Africa with heavy hearts, or else laying up in port and hoping for the Canal to reopen.

New Manth Central Command, Satlink HQ

Satlink personnel are already on high alert thanks to the Abydos's situation, and the series of computer attacks, while unexpected, do not catch them napping. The military computer and satellite network stands firm against most of the attempted intrusions, and what damage is done is limited and soon repaired. The attackers have much more success, however, in disrupting private satellites - mostly owned by the various New Manthian megacorporations - which are often contracted by their owners to the military. Naval and air force operations, being routed mainly through the military networks, are relatively undisrupted, but the Army mobilization currently ongoing suffers significant disruption and slowdowns.[/i]

OOC: No one programs in Arabic, it all descends into Unicode and raw code in the end. Snow Crash is a general term whenever the monitor malfunctions, d. It prevents someone from acting because they can't see what is happening. I'm attacking your graphics drivers, so it should bring down displays regardless of type.

If you have to spend the time finding a graphics card that isn't being given stupid instructions, that is time that can be spent hacking. Besides, most antiviruses rely on definitions, and heuristic analysis is harder than it looks. Especially if I disguise it all as routine updates. I pretend to be the server giving you updates and give the computer retarded instructions. Guess I'll bring on the big guns, but not the reaaaallly big guns.

The Military Networks were more robust. So they started really flooding it with hardcore attacks. They were using the full force of hijacked personal computers around the world. Computer Illiterate morons who couldn't remove the trojans, or didn't even know it existed now found their computers acting sloewr. Unbeknownst to them, their CPU and bandwidth was being robbed to ping the military servers. Keep the server busy, prevent antivirus suites and firewalls from moving too quickly. Give the hackers more time.

Meanwhile on the IMS Beloved Traitor, the higher ups ordered out the big guns. The massive server cluster Beowulf was called into action. It was an algorithmic machine, designed solely for military level intrusion. It would exasperate the problem of flooding the servers as hard as possible with requests for data. Then it would use its disguised handshake protocols to gain entry. It would then begin telling the hard drives to begin overwriting tombstone files with random junk, and at the same time, to tombstone every single file in the database. It was dangerous to employ Beowulf at the same time, it would risk the hacker's intrusion if files were disappearing at the same time they were trying to ruin it.

When telecom networks starting going down, they began to leave scripts, sometimes in the satellites themselves. They were leaving massive files, filled with just random 1s and 0s into the satellite's memory with explicit instructions not to delete them. It would prevent transmissions because the satellite had no memory left.

The hacker network had gained significant intelligence about military satellites, especially from defense contractors. They now positioned nearby ships at the satellites. With powerful transmitters overwhelming legitimate military transmissions, the satellites were being jammed. If they couldn't be hacked, they would be at least useless. The attacks would be focused on transmission protocols and internal chronometers. These were valuable to find out where a satellite was and use its intelligence properly. However, a select few, like Amy Wong, were targeting guidance systems. These usually were low-level systems, not important like firing controls, but just turning the satellite away from the sun, or not facing Earth would ruin it. However, she wanted a big finish, something that would make the nets buzz with joy, she wanted to create a meteor shower of satellites and went to deorbit them. this might even earn her a medal, and a fancy office in Saharistan or the Algeristani Strip, instead of the stinking fish tub that was the IMS Simulation.

The submarine had been using the panels that extended to track the oncoming ships. Amur subs were flanking the Typhoon and waiting for the helicopters to near. The Captain has called his aid, a mercenary from Saharistan, who spoke fluent Arabic.

"Sorry, we weren't sure exactly who you were or what was going on. Our SONAR operator nearly went deaf when you got hit by that missile, or GodRod, or something. We surfaced to get a better view of things and saw you."

"Our friends, we shall contact our command first before going in. I'm sure the homeland wishes to know of our neighbor's tragedy."

The aid released the button. And he looked over at the RADAR operator. The man nodded, at least 4 helicopters in close formation. It was being followed by two larger helicopters. They were well within range, and flying too slowly to avoid their advanced missiles. They were probably within range of Stingers too. The crew could see them as dots in the air.

The Captain was on the encrypted burst transmitter asking for another Ion Strike on the exact center of the ship. It was still now, an easy target. And they knew they had more than one of those massive stations. Even an angled shot (not toward them) would be a godsend.

The Captain nodded at the aid.

"My friends, we have received word of our mission."

It was silent.

"Please, do not do anything, we promise you safe passage."

Stinger missiles left their tubes toward the fast helicopters. With luck, they wouldn't notice the heat seeking missiles. The Submarine's RADAR did a hard RADAR spike a clear sign of a RADAR lock. It opened fire on the large transport helicopters. Stinger reloads were being brought up, along with RPG-16s. The men on deck now had their guns out.

The cargo ships were all flying Icovir flags, and released their cargo and opened fire from a distance with large bore, long range 280mm guns. Dozens of tiny BTR-90s, scale models, each one equipped with a .50 caliber remote controlled gun. Sailing inland toward New Manth territory.

Large transport aircraft had left Cyprus and were heading for the Sinai Peninsula. Each one of them was carrying a false paratrooper with small parachutes. They were actually mine dispersers, designed to make the area hazardous, but it was a great distraction while the real operation happened.

Encrypted Transmission to the Northern Baltic

We can now strike at New Manth. Your forces in Cyprus can move in. Our rapid reaction forces are moving from the North Sea into the Mediterranean. We can move infantry into your base in Cyprus via aircraft. We have the element of surprise.

3rd Fleet Military Harbor, New Manth
The midget sub finally reached it's waypoint at the entrance of the harbor. After a few minutes of sitting there, a few feet above the ocean floor, the midget sub moved again. This time, it's destination was under the flagship of the New Manth 3rd Fleet. It moved very, very slowely and it's path was picked that disturbed the least amount of sand on the sea bed. A few more minutes is all the little sub needed...

The fleet was already leaving the harbor. The invasion fleet would follow after, as the nessesary troops were still being prepared.
The fleet would attack the port cities of Alexandria and Port Said. The pride of the Northern Baltic is considered her Navy and the men and women of the NBN(Northern Baltic Navy) hoped to prove that today.

OOC: A long post just got eaten by Jolt. I won't have time to rewrite it for a couple days at least, sorry Baltic and Leafanistan. Final exams and all that.
