Dirikian Factbook (Few comments please)
Nation in Brief
Future tech:
Civilization Name: The Confederation of Dirikian Nomads
Number of Planets: 1 world (The Holy World of Dirik,) and thousands of spacecraft
Government Head: Representative Dictator Patrick Collin
Population: ~600 million (as of March 27. 2007)
Currency: non-uniformed gold coins (or other precious metals)
Languages: English, Basic, Chinese, Korean, Dirikian, etc., etc.
Bio:
The Nomadic people of Dirik are a people that value little more than their own safe neutrality and scientific progress. Though centered at Dirik, most of the "nation's" citizens dwell in well-armed spacecraft that roam around the political center in roughly a three to four light year radius. Nothing is uniform within the nation, not even language, although the Dirikian goverment is adopting measures to make Dirikian (an English-based language,) the official language of the realm.
Science, philosophy, and defence are the main concerns of the socialist Dirikian goverment. Its citizens are divided, de facto, into three classes: the Intellectual Elites, the Aristocratic Military and, the foundation of most societies, the Appreciated Workers. Of course, as an advance, though disorganized, society, one is not really born into their class and have mostly free reign over their destinies. A "mostly" is a necessary insert, because all healthy citizens serve four years of mandatory military service and after that service until the age of fifty, these citizens can be called back into military service in the event of a national emergency.

Nation Name: The Republic of Yugoslavia
Population: 20 million
Goverment type: Maoist Democratic Republic
Territory: Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, Hezegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo
Claims: Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia, Slovenia and Romania to the Carpathians. ("Balkan Federation")
Goverment Head: Executor of the People's Will Nikolas Zivon
Bio:
After the death of Josip Tito, a series of increasingly unpopular rulers came to power. When the ultra-nationalists Slobodan Milošević came to power, the slavs had had enough. A bloody coup erupted into a civil war that cost the country Slovenia and its southern provinces but ousted Slobodan. The unified struggle of all Slavs against that oppressor began to heal the ethnic tensions in the nation but gave rise to others such as religion and ideology. In spite of these new tensions, the nation is more stable that it has ever been under Nikolas Zivon, who lead the coup and helped to all but heal the ethnic rifts. Yugoslavia now looks towards a brighter future as the dominance of communism fades and violence drastically subsides. However, there are still hawks in parliament that demand Balkan unification, and Zivon might be forced to appease these demands.
FUTURE TECH (Galactic Spheres):
History
The Forgotten War and The Long Exile
Long, long ago on a planet light years away named Earth, a bloody war erupted between the ancestors of the Dirikians and an agressive state vaugely remembered as the 'Meneshivik Commune'. Even in those distant times the Dirikians were an advanced and intelligent people that held the progress of humanity (scientifically, culturally and mentally,) above all else. The Commune wished to use the Dirikians for their own purposes against their enemy the Democratic Union of Amerigo. A nuclear arms race existed between these two nations and Dirik became an inviting target for either side. The Meneshiviks struck first, however.
The war was fierce between Dirikians and Meneshiviks. Dirik had highly advanced technology and rugged terrain, but the Commune had far greater industrial and manpower. The conflict would clearly be won by the latter before the end. Surrender was contemplated by the weak Dirikian goverment, but the Commune soon showed a genocidal tendency that quickly ended that train of thought. With the Commune clearly not willing to spare any but the most useful Dirikians and no pity from any outside powers, only one option was left for the Dirikians. Earth must be abandoned.
After realizing their stance in the world, the Dirikians had worked hard to advance their technology to meet any threat. However, the people of Dirik also realized that a war of attrition would be their undoing and plotted alternatives in case a surrender was impossible. The best funded of these was the Dirikian space program. The program was the greatest secret on the planet and centries ahead of their rivals. While other nations were scrambling towards the Earth's moon, Dirik was experimenting with food recyclation and FTL drives. Major strides had even been made since those times when the Commune poised on the brink of defeating the small nation.
The populace was quickly evacuated towards colony ships as the military did all they could to hold back the Meneshivik's Red Army. The Commune had just soundly defeated the Dirikian's distraction when the massive world ships departed into the stars. Primitive Commune aircraft attempted to shot down these Great Arks but were disuaded when their missles were dispersed by anti-missle lasers. Dirik had escaped destruction, but now faced the vastness of space. Without fully functional FTL drives, the nation existed nomadically traveling at lightspeed in a straight line towards no where.
A Brave New World
After several generations, FTL drives were invented. After dozens of generations, reliable galactic navigation was created. After countless generations, a habitable world was discovered and, Earth and its wars became little more than legend. Dirikians, who then worshipped a chirst-like religion out of desperate hope for a new life, claimed it to be a holy world and a miracle. Though current Dirikians are by far more secular the name, the Holy World of Dirik, stuck. Many departed the Great Arks (as the colony ships came to be called,) and worked to settle this earth-like planet.
After a few years, several towns and a dozen-or-so villages were prospering on the planets surface. The Jeffersonian Democracy of the present time had consolidated in the first established city, after centuries of martial law, under the first Representative Dictator, Colonel Fredrick Adams. The military, that had long protected the Nomads of Dirik from countless unimaginable threats during the Long Exile, now began to produce warships to protect against any of the horrors that might dwell around 'Holy' Dirik.
Overall, times were good to the regrowing nation of Dirik and society eventually regained the normalcy long thought abandoned on Earth. This Golden Age last for years, much to the shrinking military's dismay and comfort, and paradise seemed finally found for the Dirikians. That was when they came.
A War against Horrors
It was previously mentioned that the Dirikians encountered unimaginable horrors on their exile. It should be noted that the wandering nation encountered many vile enemies that only science fiction novels could even come close to. Metal munching algae, bloodthirsty space pirates, barbaric alien hunting parties, Cthulu-like beings al made the Dirikian Exile a horrorfying experience. The worst of all, however, was the insect-like Irithians. This bio-mechanical insectoid empire saw the Dirikian fleet as useful material for the imperialist efforts.
Numerous times the Dirikian Military Remnants and Irithian Imperial Navy battled, with the Dirikians escaping with their hide and precious knowledge of Earth's location. In the last Dirik-Irithian conflict, DSS Vengence was turned into little more than an anti-matter bomb that, the Dirikians thought, vaporized the IIN. When the fugus-like pods fell from the heavens, however, all of Dirik knew that the Irithians had not been defeated. To their dismay, quite the opposite was true, Dirik had stirred up the hive and what had seemed like a petty threat to the Irithians was now a primary concern.
That fateful spring day was a horrifying one. Biazarre pods of a neigh forgotten foe smashed into Dirikian soil, mighty centipede-like cruisers blocked out the sun and crescent-shaped fighter/bombers set aflame all they pased over. A horror from the past had returned in its full power, but the Dirikian Navy had not been entirely stagnate. The brave but small navy of ancient vessels battled against the Irithian Cruisers and halo-like Orbital Bombardment Platforms for space superiority. The Dirikian navy was eventually forced to retreat with heavy casualties, but the ground forces were spared from the horrors of orbital barrage.
On the ground things were only slightly better. The terrain favoured neither side. The Dirikians knew the landscape, but the massive pangean continent allowed for many Irithians to land secretly where they pleased. Massive numbers of insect-like invaders overran Dirikian defences and burned settlements to the ground. As they near the capital, the DSS Guardian, outfitted with Irithian orbital artillery helped carve complex trenchs and decimate Irithian ground forces. The Capital's Battle resulted in an abosulte slaughter for the Irithians with 1,000 of them killed per Dirikian (military and civilian.) With the majority of its ground troops decimated and its ortillery capabilities disabled, the war quickly turned against the Irithian resulting in the eventually destruction of their homeworld.
After the planet Irith was turned to molten glass, the hive mind that controlled all Irithians lost power and individualism grew among the insect-like species. Amensty was quickly allowed for all the survivors on Dirik, greatly troubling the military but eventually resulting in great friendship between the two races as Irithians too embraced progressivism. This second Golden Age would result in nothing notable aside from technological advancement, expansion of the military and centralization of the goverment.
Patrick Collin, Centralization and the Greater Good
The Golden Age, or as some progressive minds call it the Dark Age, was an age of isolation. The enemy and only known neighbor to the Dirikians had been defeated and intergrated into Dirikian society. The fears and hatreds of the past soon boiled low as the Irithians and their technology proved useful to the young nation. Conservatives, anti-militarists and anarchists, seeing no threat of alien invasion for generations, gained a great deal of power with their anti-military/anti-central goverment stance. The Conservative Coalition quickly gained control of the goverment and quickly scalled down the military and the state's powers. No longer did the Representative Dictator resemble anything remotely like a dictator, nor even a president. The Republic of Dirik disentergrated into the Confederacy.
However, a lack of power on capital hill allowed for underground movements to gain more sway. A political-terror organization known only as the Black Hand gather around it other xenophobic politicians, terrorists and regular Joes. This new coalition called itself NETH (No extra-terrestrials here!) The movement used a grassroots campaign to gain enough power to control the Chambers of Representation, but the Executor's chair elluded them year after year as incumbent John Gurring, a conservative, used his moderate, sensibility to keep Dirikian minds from being clouded. The Black Hand, however, would not allow this. Dirik was to belong to their organization alone and the alien scum would be purged from the face of the galaxy! Two months into his third term, Representative Dictator Gurring was found dismembered and burned in his office.
The Military Police and High Court of Codex found his mistress, Sakura Yun guilty and began to see ties between her and the Black Hand. Patrick Collin, leader of the Progressive party and its liberal allied parties, drew connections to conservatives, who grew dissatisfied with John Gurring. Collin's conviction and dedication raised support for this tall, thin beanpole of a man. During the following presidential election Black Hand 'Boss' Cha Yung ran against the "Crusader for Justice" Patrick Collin. It did not take long for Collin's spies to connect Yung to the Black Hand and the Black Hand to NETH and NETH to the Conservative Coalition. While all the other politicians were attempting to defend themselves from countless allegations, the Progressive were piping out their "better, non-partisan tomarrow" speeches. The Progressive (and them alone, for the liberals had also fallen into discredit,) won a giant majority of the Chamber and Collin won the Presidency. Progressivism had seized control from the reactionaries and change was in the air.
The changes began immediately. Real and contrived terrorist acts occured thoroughout the nation against, what Patrick Collin would call, "the steady march of Progress against the anarchic!" The military was quickly rebuilt beyond its stature before the 'Dark Ages' and military police patrolled the streets afterdark. Dozens of top NETH members were found guilty of local purges of Irithians. These acts combined with the stage and real acts of terrorism perportrated by the NETH party made it an illegal party which lost it its sloid control over atleast one fifth of the Chamber of Representation. The Goverement was now thoroughly Progressive and its reforms were turning the disorganized confederacy into a militarized, democratic Empire.

The Military of Yugoslavia:
After winning the Yugoslav Communist-Nationalist Civil War, the Yugoslav military continued to expand in expectation of future 'bourgeoisie' invasion or insurrection. Virtually all able bodied men (and on a few occasions, women,) were either conscripted or volunteered into military service for Yugoslavia. Technology has remained at a Cold War level for most of the army and navy, but fear of long ranged air strikes has greatly advanced the air force beyond anyone, least of all foreign power's, expectations.
The Red Army:
The Red Army, thanks to close Soviet-Yugoslav cooperation prior to the dissolving of the USSR, has some of the best equipment the Soviet Red Army had to offer. Kalashnikov Assault Rifles are not an uncommon sight within the Red Army, though modernizing efforts have made AK's a rarer sight. Tanks, Artillery and Transports are all of Chinese or Russian design, and only since the fall of the Soviets and apathy of the Chinese has Yugoslavia invested in the designing of its own weaponry. The Red Army is the pride of the Socialist Republic but is long overdue for an advancement in equipment.
Infantry:
The Yugoslav Military Police:
http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/7293/militarypoliceorinfantrcx3.jpg
Crime fighters to those of Communist Loyalty and Oppressors of Capitalist Dissenters, the Yugoslav MP zealously protect the streets from those that would undermine the nature of the state. The Military Police evolved from the revolutionaries that fought the Nazis in retaking the Nation of Slavs, and could be called into militia service for the Red Army at any time.

Yugoslav Standard "Grunt" Infantry:
http://img178.imageshack.us/img178/9573/200pxusnavygasmaskexcerzw9.jpg
The Yugoslav Standard Infantry Units, more commonly known as "Grunts", are the backbone of the Slavic Red Army. They are usually not the first into battle but more often than not, they are the last to leave. All more specialized and elite classed infantry are chosen from these standard infantry, with the exception of the Military Police whom are chosen from the ranks of the Civilian Police. Their equipment is decent but armor is usually in short supply. They carry a variety of equipment with them and usually have an assigned anti-tank, machine gunner and rifleman.
Equipment:
Military Gas Mask
Kevlar Helmet and Armor (sometimes)
AK-74 Assault Rifle
Yugoslavian PAP M59/66 Carbine Rifle
M61 Skorpion Automatic Pistol
M80 Zolja anti-tank weapon
RPK Light Machine Gun
CZ-99 Pistol
Yugoslav Special Riflemen
http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/7939/russiachechnyasniperie6.jpg
Chosen from the most gifted shooters among the 'Grunts', the Special Riflemen are given far more specialized equipment than their lower tiered comrades. Often these men are used as snipers attached to standard infantry divisions. Other times, they may be in a unit of their own for scouting or attacking behind enemy lines. These men are trained to be stealth incarnate and are known for never missing a shot.
Equipment:
Military Gas Mask
Camouflaged Kevlar armor
Zastava M93 Black Arrow Sniper Rifle
PSS Silent Pistol
Yugoslav Honor Guard:
http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/4162/sas122100zc1.jpg
The best of the best, these troops are the most elite and highly trained of all the Yugoslav infantry divisions. They are the face of the State on the battlefield and thus they are glorified by the state. Their training is so rigorous that out of 400 recruits 200 will give up within the first few weeks, 150 will fail miserably to pass, twenty will be hospitalized, ten will be permanently maimed or die and the remaining twenty will pass without serious physical harm done. Because of the nature of their training, their is usually fewer than five brigades of Honor Guard at any given time. These troops are hard skinned and powerful, though, and their training has warranted them the most advanced weaponry the nation of Yugoslavia has to offer. Where as the "Grunts" may be the blunt ax of the Red Army, the Honor Guard is the precise and deliberate scalpel with which to remove the enemies heart with chilling precision.

I request an Embassy with your nation, for we share similer ideaologys and this is a dangerous world for people of our ideaology
Erm...okay. I'd have preferred a TG rather than this though. I would have preferred this area for my fact book alone, given my organization is already quite chaotic. I'm considering hosting a conference for communist and socialist nations for unity in the upcoming world conflicts. Though, perhaps, a greater power might be willing to do the honor.
