Blackhelm Confederacy

Before the plague and subsequent collapse, the nation many now know as the Blackhelm Confederacy was known as the Empire of Exponent. Let's take a trip back to the past, to a time where Exponent was just beginning to get a feel of the outside world and step out of isolation. The notoriously xenophobic Exponentials took to the streets and attended massive rallies throughout the country, hoping to convince the government to keep out of the business of the rest of the world and keep their funds within in the Empire. Groups of these people, who came to be known as "trippies" for their drug use, began moving to communes and living in small trippy communities around the jungle. Trippy and anti-Imperialist music was beginning to enter the mainstream, and the government was torn between its own people and the rest of the world.
Chancellor Marcellus Goldglove was elected into office in 1954, and he still had two more years before he would be up for re-election. In order to maintain the appeal of the people, he played up to them by appearing to withdraw his interest in outside matters, but behind the scenes he was stepping up military and economic influence throughout the globe. When the violence in Sampeng erupted, him and his advisors had a difficult choice before them. Rather than sending in a full military force or completely abandoning the situation, the Exponential Chiefs of Staff decided to send in a team of Imperial Honor Guard. A group of men, handpicked by the Chancellor himself, would board a plane to travel half way around the world, and would find themselves in a hell that they would never have predicted.
Griffincrest Oil Incorporated was still under the rule of its founder, Julius Griffincrest. The company was still confined at the time to only the Empire, and was also behind its main competitors, Vion Oil and Sparkle. It would not be until 1978 that Claudius Griffincrest would assume command of the business, and not until after the plague that the corporation would become the one it is known today.
