The Kingdom of Bautzen was officially formed on the 18th of February 1456. It was comprised of a loose alliance of nobles and wealthy landowners from the surrounding territories for mutual defence.
At the founding the Kingdom was still a weak polity and the King had comparitively little power over his nobles, when placed against many other contemporary Kingdoms, and Empires.
It was not until the late 16th century that the Kings began centralizing the state, and only then it was due to recent reversals in battle due to the infighting between nobles.
From 1680 to 1760 is considered the Kingdoms Golden Age, her military rarely lost, and she had wealth beyond the imagining of even her most greedy subjects. However, in 1790 disastor struck when King George IV led the Kingdoms armies to disastor In a poorly planned, and even more poorly executed, series of campaigns he bankrupted the Kingdom and ruined her armed forces. This time period from 1760 to 1830 is known as the "Dark Age" by many in modern Bautzen. However, in 1830 the corrupt King Charles III was replaced by his brother James the Kingdom quickly began to return to its former glory.
During the reign of James I (r. 1830-1845), as series of political and economic reforms were passed. These included the gradual sell off of government run manopolies, and the establishment of a free market system, and universal male sufferage for a newly empowered Parliament (It had existed since the consolidation of the Empire, it just never had any real power).
Today these reforms are felt all across Bautzen as the country has quickly and efficiently industrialized, and modernized and is now a powerhouse in Eastern Europe. In addition a growing number of Bautzens citizens have begun to experiment in new feilds as compulsary, state financed Primary and Secondary Schools have led to a revival of education and literacy in the past 40 yrs. since the systems inception.
Modern Bautzonians look foreward to a new and brighter future, while also waiting silently for the comming storm to erupt in Europe.
Military (66,000)
The KIngdoms military is seperated into two branches, the Royal Army and Navy. While the Royal Army is considered the focus of the nations military might the King has often found it necessary to maintain a well trained, and well equipped navy as well. The army never having relied overly on cavalry has started making the switch over to Mechinized forces far earlier than a nation which had embraced cavalry as the "Kings" of the battlefield. Research has gone into aircaft, but the army now maintains only a few aircraft at their disposal.
