The Waldenburg Empire

Government Style: Theoretical Monarchy (With a weak Church Senate)
Monarch: His Most Gracious Imperial Majesty Wyatt Von Waldenburg III
Heir Apparent: Prince Felix Von Waldenburg
Population: 14,592,000
Colonial: 980,000
Capital: (Imperial) Strienlikstern (Denmark)
Capital: (As used by the government): Blunderbürg (Sweden)
Army: 4% Drafted (National Service)
National Pronoun: Waldenburger
Currency: (Imperial Osma) ‡

Starting around 890 Germanic peoples based around the tiny village of Waldenburg moved north, following their herds and foraging where eventually they found a niche fishing in the relatively calm waters of the Baltic. The first kingdom sprouted up, in Denmark as the Eliption Empire, which built a modern system of roads, and bridges in around 950. Eventually the Kingdom fell apart in civil war after royal inbreeding. The Waldenburger Dark Age followed, as any lord who could swing a sword became a king. Little wars eventually created one large super kingdom with Denmark and the south of Sweden as the firs, Waldenburg Empire.

At the Empire's creation (January 25th 1120) it had evolved a unique type of government where the styles of one blood thirsty dictorship where mixed with the sweet loving care of some of Denmark's attempts at Democracy. The early kings began constructing a fleets to hold the all-important Oresund Strait, which connects the Baltic to the Atlantic. With the strait firmly in Waldenburg's hands, all shipping of the Baltic passes through Imperial hands. In 1145 the Empire was fully converted to Catholicism by missionaries.

By 1670 all of Norway Sweden and of course Denmark where in the hands of the High Kings directed by a system of Earls and Barons. A qusi Parliament was formed, with peasants represented lightly, and the aristocracy taking 80% of the vote. Eventually the Church of Waldenburg who, kindly brought down the upper class through unknown means championed the people’s cause. The people then granted all their voting powers to the Church in thanks. The Emperor felt that this severely limited his power base, and before the Church could consolidate it's power, he declared the Empire a "Constitutional Monarchy" with a Church lead Senate. The common peasant liked the idea and pushed for it leaving no option but for the clergy to except, and limit their power extremely.

For that reason the Emperor of Waldenburg is again in a unique situation where all that must be done to pass law, is for him and his ministers to take power of all legislative departments and create it. This lead to a nationalist wave which swept the nation in the 1870's creating a powerful navy and a, string of universities, which is currently exploring (historically accurate in Denmark) the heavier use of oil in combustion engines.

Waldenburg's current policy is to stay uninvolved and build up wealth and power to make one single, territorial or economic gain. It is conservative to the extreme, and fairly isolationist.

Army:
The army is divided up into several sections based on historical precedent and commanded by the nobility through some ancient twist in the constitution. They rank is importance as follows respectively:

Divine Legion: Once the strong arm of the Church the Legion has become the guard force of all the Empire’s VIPs. They number around 15,000 and are always on active duty, they are career soldiers and heavily trained for their mission. They operate in one Division out of Strienlikestern under direct command of the Emperor. Also serves as logistics

Honorable Order of the Heron: At the climatic battle of Vindlesawburn it is said that a heron came out of the sky and performed an effective if impromptu flanking maneuver, leading to the creation to the slaughter of the enemy army and the creation of the Empire a few weeks later. This order is for all those who have “Distinguished themselves in the service of His Majesty. Through civil or military means.” Those it is awarded swear to protect the Empire’s stability and are a Royal police force for the detection of traitors and terrorists. They again number slightly under 15,000 and operate in 14 regiments, based in all major cities. It is also permanently on duty. Also serves as Logistics

The Imperial order Chivalry: Started before the Church took over the Senate this was the only order to which a peasant could rise. Every village would elect one man, who had no issue, and he would then report to Strienlikstern and be welcomed to the upper class. The order’s charter states it must uphold the name of Catholic Church and must defend the weak against injustice. The nobility up to the point of course controlled them where the Church shattered their power. This is the smallest remaining order at only Battalion strength, but is arguably the most important and the only true knightly order Waldenburg has left. Also serves as Logistics

Imperial Intelligence Service: Instead of the ominous underground shadowy operation you’d expect, The IIS runs things quite smoothly above ground, they perform the duties of a propaganda ministry and when necessary an elite police force. As per law they are not allowed to be armed with firearms, unlike the normal police, and use riot equipment. Only the director and the Emperor know the true numbers but it could not be over 10,000 operating in all major cities. Serves normally in logistics and morale assignments.

Regular Army: In time of crisis the Emperor can put forward a call, which will, bring up 375,000 trained and armed soldiers to his majesty’s will. While not the best force in history, there are strategic points around the country that they will fortify themselves in. The Waldenburger army is a defensive one, relying on better ground and conditions then numbers. The break down is army’s goes as follows.

Army of the North: (Situated in Northern Sweden) 75,000 Infantry, 13,000 Cavalry, and 6000 artillerymen (As a rule of thumb I take the number of men divided by 12 to find the number of cannons)

Army of the Interior: (Based out of Blunderburg) 100,000 Infantry, 30,000 Cavalry, and 12,000 Artillerymen.

Army of the Line (based on German Danish Border) 85,000 Infantry, 5,000 Cavalry. 10,000 Artillerymen (there are four forts and one castle on the border)

Army of the Union of Kings (Guards of the Royal family and possessions) 5,000 Infantry 5,000 Cavalry. (A remaining 45,000 are in permanent logistics, even though most Waldenburg armies have troops performing the job of logistics and fighting.

Air force: the least developed wing of the armed forces, it is viewed as nearly heretical by the Church and impractical by the Army, it has two Zeppelin airships at it’s command though.
WIAS (Waldenburg Imperial Airship) Revelation
RAS (Royal Airship, {In direct service of the Emperor}) White Mountain

Navy: With Waldenburg’s situation at the tip of the Baltic it can control all access into the Baltic. To protect this Waldenburg has developed a shockingly good navy. Almost 190,000 Men serve in the navy, defending Waldenburg’s most precious resource the ocean. The guns on a Waldenburg cruiser will be watching any ship that passes through the Oresund strait to the Baltic. The Empire operates two fleets, one in the Baltic and another it’s deep ocean force. (Classes and types shall come later once I’ve done some research.

Still Waiting on Economics and Equipment

Economics: (Still waiting on more economic details, and colonies but I will start here.)

Natural Resources lead, zinc, gold, silver, tungsten, uranium, arsenic, feldspar, timber salt, limestone, chalk petroleum, natural gas, iron ore, copper titanium, pyrites, nickel, fish, timber.

OOC Note I have studied the matter of my navy in depth, there is no reason why one of our countries could not specifically focus on it's navy, and habe a navy as large or bigger than that of the British. Mine is smaller, not by much but in all aspects (Except possibly submarines not sure there.) Having studied the Wikipedia sight, showing Personell and Tonnage of the navy, mine is only slightly smaller by man power, and with a consderable difference in tonnage.
And all my cruisers are either protected or armoured making them light cruisers, and outdated.

Navy (My unoffcial OOC stand.)

As I am really very tired of explaining my navy to people I shall put everything down here so that, at least all the shouting will be condenced into one easily ignored page.

Historically the, mostly Danish but also Swedish navy, was like Amish Furniture, you pay a lot for it, it takes time and does the job of something that can be prodcued by a machine in about an hour. It still works and is a good way of stretching the budget of a ship out over a period of years. Waldenburg cuts out the pretty, and pays a lot bit. But keeps the long production time to cut down on costs. I will make myself clear here at least, our navy is not inferior, it is out of date yes and really not suited for action in the Baltic besides that it is only poorly upkept but that can be changed relatively easily.

As I have stated above half the navy is kept in use at any given time, that means at least half the navy is ready to sail at any given time and in a fighting stage. Also I'd like to note that our Dreanaughts cannot be out of date as their production only began in 1906, although they can be outclassed by the super Dreanaught of course, although i don't think anyone has cliamed to have one yet. The ships are also in a rota not allowing for any major damage to build up without being noticed by it's new crew very shortly.

Here are my classes of ships to assist in biasis yelling.

The Archangel Class

Empire Class

Pre Dreadnaught Battlship
Patriarch Class

Armored Cruisers:

Revenge class:

Fortitude Class

Warrior Class (Only ten have been built and have all been assigned to the Asian fleet.)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Warrior_%281905%29

Protected Crusiers:

Virolent Class
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Atlanta_%281884%29 (Gattlings replaced with Maxims and Pom Poms)

Horizon Class (Made This Earlier)

Displacement: 6,310 Tons
Length: 343 Ft.
Beam: 51 Ft.
Draught: 22.4 Ft.
Propulsion: Four Blünder-Entguard Coil Boilers
Maximum Speed: 18 Knots
Maximum Range: 4900 NM
Crew Complement: 490 Officers and Crew
Armaments:
3X 6in Guns
6X 3in Guns
2X 4 in Long Bore Guns
6X 40mm Pom Pom Guns (Accurate at up to 3,500 yards.)
Armor: 5in amidships, 4in Bow & Stern, 6in Command bridge\conning tower

Destroyers:

Market Class (Still makes up 70% of Destroyer fleet, around 30 Years old.)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_warship_Kotaka

Blunderürg Class (Newer and in the Dispatch fleet to Kasinov)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Bainbridge_%28DD-1%29

As you can see most ships are past their prime especially in the era where the Dreadnaught was taking power but, they really are not that terrible, despite the Destroyers, they really are quite bad, although more heavily armed so that could go either way.

OOC: Then obviously you haven't studied hard enough. In fact, I'm going to go out on a limb here, and say you haven't studied at all. Let me give you a few reasons.

1 - No Eu1914 country has a home population of 60 million.

2 - No Eu1914 country has an Empire that spans over a quarter of the world's landmass.

3 - No Eu1914 countries have no land borders. An aspect of Great Britain which allowed the British to focus primarily on defense via the navy - they required the navy to maintain both their overseas empire and their defense at home, the two factors, incidentally, which allowed them to pay for it.

4 - You're a quarter of the size of the British. You have no Empire, and nothing that even comes close to the sort of manpower, resources, and wealth the British had.

So, yeah. Time to study harder, maybe?

What I am saying is in a an alternate Europe where "Europe 1914 is NOT Europe sociopolitically, ethnically, or in terms of cities and forts. Only geography and natural resources remain the same. You may place your cities, forts, towns and armies wherever you like." I undesrtstood that to say if we want no armies and put it to navy that is allowed. True I don't have the size of the British Empire but that is not truely neccesary, in the context of the rules as I have interepreted them anyway. It may not be wise in terms of defense though.

As for wealth I operate on an entirely different economic system, Centralized Monarchy, a corrupt one at that. Not to mention the neccesity of a navy to guard the Oresund strait which according to traffic records it provided one eight of the Danish government's income in around 1860. And that does not include, Import export duties, and a whole range of other little taxes. And I'm charging more, per ship to go through.

However as the supreme Mod I will respect your wishes should you order to change it.

EDIT: Also I heard someone metion we would be getting colonies that to adds to the fleet size. Although what I may have heard may be false.

Now that I have fond the approriate links I shall begin the more accurate proof.

http://www.gwpda.org/naval/wcosts.htm
Website shows a general, prices of larger ships and a few smaller ships. unfortunately idon't think there is much demand for information on historic ship costs. At these prices my fleet would Cost somewhere in the are of 80,000,000£. Usually rounded up.

Between the years of 1860 and 1914 the three countries on which my empire control, operated 62 Armored ships.(Cruisers, and above.) Most of these being costal defense Monitors, and battleships. (Only 8 Proper Dreadnuaghts though.)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Royal_Norwegian_Navy_ships
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Swedish_coastal_defence_ships

(Another Swedish One, though it certainly accountants for the smaller ships)
http://www.tfd.chalmers.se/~m95perm/fartyg/fartyg.html
(Danish Battleships, however this is possibly the best naval historical sight I have ever found, and includes quite a large number of other ships.
http://www.navalhistory.dk/English/Naval_Lists/Types/ArmoredShips.htm

(I am still missing some sights but those are the main ones I used.)

My fleets contains 76 Larger ships of protected cruiser and above. Only fourteen large ships over what these countires operated. Now the suprising part in that my population is somewhat larger then all three countries combined at this point.

http://www.populstat.info/
Theirs combined equalling 10,986,200
Mine somewhere over 14,000,000

The only places where I have stretched myself are in the submarines, and Destroyers. However those are comparitively cheap. And easier to create. I would also like to say that None of these countries hardly ever used foreign contractors, to allow their isolationisim to stay intact. An option which of course would be open to me.

I had a sight on Iron Ore production but unfortunately lost it while pulling these things up.

Still I shall obey your orders.

0 Proper Dreadnoughts. None. Nada. There was not a single dreadnought operated by either of those 3 countries you control. Those links you've given me tell me about Monitors and coastal defense ships - this implies that either, A, you're talking out of your arse, and hoping that I wouldn't look at the link, or B, think that the words 'monitor' and 'dreadnought' mean exactly the same thing. Which they don't, incidentally.

You can have this navy - but you'd better be RPing some serious poverty at home to pay for the thing, not to mention the continuous stripping of resources you undertake in your colonies.

Strangely enough it is from column B from which I make my point, http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/Dreadnaught according to this a Dreadnaught is any ship launched after the HMS Dreadnaught, with large caliber guns in turrets. Now Large may be defined is so many different ways, I usually consider 15 inch or bigger large, there for technically even a monitor provided it could reach 21 knots (Also a generally accepted condition but not neccesary really) could be considered by this source a Dreadnaught.

There are few ships with bigger guns then 10 inches but there are some. Perhaps the Scandanavians did not wish to draw attention to themselves, by calling everyone of their monitors, Dreadnaughts, I don't have such a limitation of course. Admittedly by this system my Dreadnaughts would be incrediablly, laughably weak.

As for the money I think I have already hinted in the Pavillion Thread that my navy is in poor condition, despite it's size. Also in that I stated industry is suffering, so yes poverty is setting in although it is less then most would think, depending on the Oresund Strait and the taxes levied upon it I can upkeep a peace time navy, although during wartime yes I'll be looking for plunder. Incidentally the whole Oresund Strait taxation has been a breeding ground for incidents in historical Rp's in the past Usually the Brits trying to open it up based on the Freedom of the seas and that.
