Great things were happening in Northern Canada. The people who had taken power locally after the fall of the Squornshelan Imperium had little by little united themselves into a loose confederation. As they restored the crumbling infrastructure of their once great land, they learned that another bastion of old Squornshelous remained as a sovreign nation. Soon, contact was made with this nation and agreements were made. The world would once again know the great nation of Squornshelous.

The Empire wishes to extend its pleasure that the Squornshelan (sp?) nation has revived itself and begin to reclaim its Empire. We will extend the United Squornshelan Republic the same respects that were given to the Mediterrainean Republic and will continue diplomatic relations.

We thank our old friends in Layarteb for their speedy recognition of our reformed country. We look forward to years more of friendship with the Empire.

In order to stabilize Canadian Squornshelous and secure potentially dangerous sites and material from the general public, two infantry divisions of the what is now the Maltese Corps of the Squornshelan Army have been dispatched to Canada. Government officials have been sent with them to help establish common law and order and integrate the homegrown governments into the Republic. The paramilitary forces under the various governors have been instructed to stand down and comply completely with the Maltese Corps. Hopefully, the soldiers will soon be able to return home and homegrown military units will take their place. For the time being, however, Squornshelan Canada is under martial law.

We wish to state that we recognize the Squarchelan nation and wish you long years of peace, stability and prosperity. We would like to open diplomatic relations with your nation and establish trading relations. I am sure once your markets are opened the private investments from the Federation will start pouring in and your economy will flourish.

We would be pleased to open diplomatic and trade relations with the Russian Federation. While Squornshelous no longer holds any Russian territory, the ethnic and cultural bond between our people is strong and we are happy to welcome your ambassadors.

Canadian Squornshelous has been stabilized. The Maltese Corps is now maintaining control of all former Imperial Squornshelan Military sites and hardware. Local militias, recruits and former members of the Imperial Squornshelan armed forces are being run through accelerated basic training programs so the the Maltese may be sent home as soon as possible. Much equipment has been recovered relatively undamaged despite the years that it has spent in neglect. In short, the annexation of Canada is progressing as smoothly as possible.

With the siezure of old naval bases, some units of the Squornshelan Navy are transferring to Canada from the hopelessly crowded harbors of Malta.

In the naval section of Valletta's busy harbor, several ships slipped their moorings one by one and were tugged out. Mostly, they were aging Ticonderoga missile cruisers and a mixture of more modern Squornshelan designed destroyers. The most notable two ships to leave were one Kirov class battlecruiser and the nuclear attack submarine SSN-641 (formerly Petropavlovsk). The surface ships assembled into formation and set off for Gibraltar, and from there, Canada. The did not stay with the formation, which was moving at a rather sedate speed, but hurried on its way, making about 20 knots. Due to its advanced insulation systems and other noise eliminating steps taken in her construction, it was extremely unlikely that anyone could detect her at all.

After two days journey, being sure to remain undetected at all times, 641 had reached the North Atlantic, and was approaching the vicinity of Baffin Bay and the Davis Straight. Here, she slowed to a crawl, a mere ten knots, despite being rated "silent" at much higher speeds. Her purpose was to test the Layartebian SOSUS nets and antisubmarine measures, and maybe even to play a little tag with Imperial subs themselves. This would be the first true test of her abilities. She had spent all her time during the Pacifinesian War waiting to intercept a Doomani Naval strike at Malta, a stike that never came, and she had sat in here covered dock ever since.

If she could get the better of the Layartebian navy, she could truly be named the best submarine in the world.

Meanwhile, the fleet that had left Malta was still proceeding sedately through the Atlantic. They would arrive near the Davis Straight in two days, and would follow procedures for passing through any Layartebian territorial waters to the letter.
