Quake In Aleard [MT]

Aleard
21-03-2007, 19:14
The TV in the Presidents bedroom was turned down quiet and its light flickered on the walls, from white to black, leading to a flash. The news had been on for half an hour now, not that President Thomson knew this, as he was fast asleep.

The reporters rushed through the last story, before apologising and announcing breaking news. "A quake within Aleard has been recorded on a seismograph in the early hours of today. The quake has been said to be small and in the middle of a large barren plot of land in Aleard known as the Baylin Region. Monitors of Aleard say that this, from what is known, could be a nuclear test carried out underground.

"Uranium was found in the forests of Aleard and was mined not too long ago. There have been worries that Aleard may have been developing nuclear facilities, but nobody has yet asked questions. The democracy loving and free market nation has not, as economists know, put any money into development of nuclear weapons, but it is entirely possible that they have found funding to carry out research away from international attention."

--------

Only the elite and the scientists within Aleard knew what had happened, the rest of the world could only speculate.

OOC: Basically, this is a nuclear test. It hasnt gone quite right, but the shockwaves were enough to make the media ask questions if this wasnt apparent.

IC:

Official Statement

The Government Of Aleard is not in a position in which it would choose to divulge information about the recorded quake within the Baylin Region.

We will say that reports on the finding of Uranium deposits within Aleard are true. Exporting of this Uranium has not occured and the deposits were seized by the government.

From the Frenzia Defense Council:

Although the development of NBC weapons is within your rights as a nation,we would like to remind you to consider the horrors of using these weapons.Frenzia has a very small stockpile of defensive nuclear weapons, these have never been used and we have been able to beat back a very ruthless enemy twice.

Vetakan Geological Survey:

The Vetakan Geological Survey (VGS) would like to report to the worlds media that we can confirm that VGS recorded a medium size quake at precisly 18:15 Hours Vetakan Time. The epicentre we triangulated to be within the Baylin Region of Aleard. VGS at this time is unware of any history of past quakes of the recorded magnitude within the area. At this time the VGS is officially designating this quake as "Unexplained" until further Geographical investigations can be made.

Standard E-mail to the Aleard Govenment:

I am Chief Investigator Dr Stephanie Jones of the VGS we humbly request permission to enter your nation to investigate the Quake that accorded yesterday under International Law and Vetakan Law we are required to attain your permission to enter. We will pay for everything and supply our own equipment all that we request is your permission and if required a copy of any rules you intend to force upon you.

I must make you aware that although we are seperate from the Govenment of Vetaka we are a "Protected Organization" by the Govenment which basically means should a situation occur in which me and my staff are put in danger the Govenment of Vetaka would respond accordingly.

Your message has been received and noted. We can assure you that our use of nuclear technology is, as a democratic nation, for completely peaceful reasons. Unless given very good reason to do so, a nuclear attack is simply not an option to Aleard.

Yours,
President Thomson.

On Behalf Of The Republic Of Aleard.

We would be happy to let you into our nation to record anything you wish about our geography. We will ask a number of things of you though. We ask that you show consideration for the people of Aleard and the nation itself when carrying out your studies. We ask that you report all findings back to us for our own information, as although studies have been carried out in the past, a second opinion is always welcomed. We also will force a squad of the Aleardian army upon you, purely to monitor your actions, but I am sure you will understand this.

However, we cannot allow you to enter all areas, as some places are off limits to unauthorised personnel. We doubt you will need to enter these areas at any time, but incase you do, you may be denied access for reasons of national defence.

Yours,
President Thomson.

On Behalf Of The Republic Of Aleard.

The airport designated for the landing of the huge aircraft that carried the foreign visitors was an unwelcoming military airport in the middle of the Abass region. The harsh unforgiving terrain was a constant reminder of the kind of place they were in. The recent spate of bad weather hadn't yielded to the wishes of the Head Of Command John Harris. "Nightbird 1, Landing permission granted, runway 1-A. Warnings of strong winds, take care on landing."

The strong winds blew sand across the runways, creating low visibility. The wind blew one way, then the other. Harris could only hope the visitors knew in advance of the conditions, and were prepared for them. Nobody was at the airport to give them hospitality.

That would come later.

Military Airport, Abass Region, 07:30, Strong Winds & Sandy:

As the C-5 came into land it took immense Skill by the pilots to land it successfully and more importantly safely the Plane taxied towards its designated hanger. The C-5 was blazed with the colours of the "Vetakan Geological Survey" down its side. They had researched as much as they could on Aleard including its weather and political system. When the plane eventually came to a halt Dr Stephanie Jones orderd her team to stay in the Aircraft and prep the various peices of euipment. Dr Jones flanked by a VDF Guard decsended to the steps of the plane to the tarmac she wore a Sandstorm Suit and Goggles in order to protect her eyes also so she could see. She gazed around to see if she could any sort of Welcome Party or Passport control.

OOC: How do you want this to play out?

A jeep rolled up outside the hangar, the doors slamming shut. Four men approached Dr Jones, three armed with rifles. "Dr Jones, if you could follow us please." The man began to walk, backed by the three guards, towards the jeep. Another four approached.

"We are taking you into our capital, where you can stay the night in comfort. This is the worst weather we have seen in a while, a storm is brewing." The man spoke with such wisdom and intellect, pausing for great lengths between phrases. He was clearly, by his whole manner, a military man.

(Secret Conversation. Baylin Region The Same Morning.)

"The next test is ready. Commencing in two days."

"Very good Dr Harlow. We should have a working nuclear bomb in two days, correct?"

"Yes. It will take a further month to produce the first warhead, but we have ICBMs for submarine launch ready, as well for silo launch. Short range and medium range missiles are also ready."

"Very well. Continue your work. As long as we get this work completed before those foreigners find out. As long as we finish quickly, I cant wait to leave this hell ridden place. Theres something about it I dont like. Something in the air."

"That is felt with a lot of the scientists on the project, sir."
