His Majesty the King has announced, on behalf of the Government, that the United Kingdom of Clandonia is to become the founding member of the 'Royal Georgian League' - a new organisation to be constructed along the lines of the Questerian Commonwealth. The government has also admitted that a recent Clandonian defensive system called the 'King William line' along its land border with a Midlonian colony was "primarily funded" by the War Office.
In exchange for agreeing to enter the Praetonian sphere, Clandonia is to receive more than four trillion Crowns of direct government aid to fund a massive programme of investment in education and basic health and sanitation, which have been left shattered to third world levels by the mass migration of the majority of Clandonia's population from their original homeland, now under Whyatican imperial occupation, to a new site in Haven. Clandonia will also receive "an ultimate guarantee of continued sovereignty" that the King said "would be backed by the full force of My Realm against any foe, near or far".
Clandonia has also adopted the Crown as her official currency. The country's near-wholesale translocation, which has not been without controversy, is believed to have largely been funded by sympathetic Praetonian Royalists, and following the massive injection of money from the Exchequer it is estimated that more than half of the currency circulating in Clandonia will already be of Praetonian origin.
In His speech, the King set forth not just a plan for direct government aid, but also for "a vast private-sector rebuilding exercise" which would involve Praetonian businesses expanding into the virgin Clandonian economy to provide jobs and services to the Clandonian people. The Confederation of Praetonian Industry was highly supportive of the idea, a spokesman stating that "Our members have already begun to invest in Clandonia, but with recent government assurances that Clandonia will be protected from much-rumoured foreign invasion attempts and supplied with Praetonian raw materials and personnel, investment is set to grow exponentially."
In addition to providing direct governmental aid and private sector investment, the Government announced that food would be purchased from Praetonian industrial farms in the colonies and sold in Clandonia at below cost price. "Their old economy left behind in a Whyatican imperial province, the most urgent need of the Clandonian people is to be provided with food," said the King, "and until the purchasing power of the average Clandonia has been sufficiently rebuilt, My Exchequer shall provide."
Although high levels of aid run contrary to traditional Liberal Tory economic principles, the Chancellor affirmed that the deal would be net beneficial in the long run, saying that "we are taking a golden oppurtunity to gain possession of what will be, with our help, a very strong first world economy." The Chancellor went on to say that "every penny that has been given by the people of this Realm will in time be repaid."
Although Clandonia will lose some control over its governance, the vast majority of domestic powers are to be retained locally, and many believe that Praetonia's "moderating influence" could prove beneficial for the new United Kingdom, which has provoked controversy for its hostile interactions with The World Soviet Party and its decision to construct "supercapital submarines" at a time when its economy is in ruins and largely kept afloat by foreign money. Clandonia's recent decision to scrap the Puriton-class submarines has been attributed by some sources to government refusals to fund the project through aid, although cause is yet to be solidly attributed.
It is as yet unknown whether the 'Royal Georgian League', which now has its own flag (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v387/Praetonia/RGLflag.png) to be flown next to national flags at Praetonian and Clandonian embassies, has aspirations to grow beyond the two-nation bloc into a larger organisation resembling the Questerian Commonwealth. A sources close to the Cabinet refused expansion was planning, but said that "interest from abroad would be treated with an open mind," and that "privelaged access to Praetonian markets, government aid and military backing would be highly valuable to prospective members".
