Quest for the Lost Crown

Would anyone be interested in doing a role play about a quest for an ancient crown that supposedly causes people to obey whoever wears it as if he were their king? It also supposedly has a curse.

The quest takes place in my nation, the Zekresh Empire. Unlike other Nation States nations, the Zekresh Empire is very low tech, basically medieval technology or less. Also, the Zekresh Empire is located on a different planet from all the other NS nations.

Another thing that makes the Zekresh Empire different is that it is not just a one-man show. The Zekresh Empire is run by a group of NS players. Other NS players have already been playing the role of various characters and leaders in the Zekresh Empire for months (of real time). Most of them are provincial governors. Two of the players who are provincial governors have already declared independence and made their provinces separate countries in the world where the Zekresh Empire is located. They may soon have to defend themselves from efforts by the Empire to reconquer them.

One of those breakaway provinces is Helmarie. Now that Helmarie is independent, its leader is organizing a quest to recover the legendary Lost Crown of Ilania.

Who would like to be in this game and participate in the quest?

I would but as I am already playing it as the Ulor of Kajakan Tros I will stay out of this.

Yes, that's why I didn't invite you or any other existing players to participate yet except Esinie and there is a reason why he is involved that is directly related to a decree he issued some time back. You are welcome to participate with your existing character if this matter comes to his attention, but the idea here is to get some new players who are not already enmeshed in the political power struggles of the empire.

This is a sort of side adventure that will introduce new players to the game with a far less complex starting scenario than you guys had. But if the quest succeeds, you may find that this will affect the balance of power in the Empire.

If the crown can really do what the legends say, whoever finds it could replace the Emperor. As you may have seen in one of the scrolls in the library, Prince Toralin of Corinweld (Ravenwood) is said to have overthrown the Frayeth Emperor in ancient times (approximately 2,000 years ago) by the power of this same crown. And a magic sword named Corinbek (Raven's Beak) and a suit of magic armor that supposedly belonged to one of the original sixteen knights of Ravenwood in an even earlier era.

By the way, some members of the quest are also planning to look for that sword and armor. The Legend of the Duel says that Prince Toralin's son threw away the crown, the sword and the armor at the same place. It is possible that whoever finds the crown will find the others as well.

Or maybe it's all just a legend in a world full of legends. Come find out. Who wants to play?

By the way, the first five characters to sign up for this will be allowed to have tremendous fighting skills and just about any low tech weapons you want. This is because the initial quest consists of the best fighters in the "Free Nation of Helmarie" (Previously Helmarie province).

This sounds really interesting, I'd like to know a little more first before I do anything, mostly stuff about the extended universe, so TAG for interest really.

Welcome, Toopoxia. I'm glad to hear you are interested. The "extended universe" as you call it is rather well developed, probably more so than any other game out there.

This was done originally with the idea of having other players play an offsite RP as governors of provinces of the Empire. We planned to do that on a large scale with all 81 provinces of the empire run by players. But first, we playtested it with a couple playtesters, then we added a few more playtesters. We are still in the playtesting stage of what we hope will be a much bigger game, but already we've had sixteen players. Not all of them are still active. Some quit, others were fired by the Emperor and are no longer governors.

Since we started playtesting, we have begun to have players who have other roles. It turns out to not be easy to rule a province, much less an independent country and there has been some interest in playing less difficult roles.

Of course, this same universe can be the scene of all kinds of adventures. So when some non-player characters approached Ulor Esinie, the ruler of Helmarie, about going on a quest to recover the Lost Crown of Ilania, I realized that this was too good of an adventure to not have player characters involved. So I posted this thread in hopes of finding a few good role players who are interested.

While the players who go on this quest will be less politically powerful than some of the existing players, they will all be much better warriors than any current player. Also, whoever gets the crown may instantly gain more political power than all the current players put together. On the other hand, if they hear about it and believe the legends about the crown are true, they may send their minions to try to find the crown before the questors do.

There are already other non-player character groups searching for the crown. If we get a lot of interest here, there could end up being more than one group of player characters searching as well. But only this first group is likely to receive funding and military help from Ulor Esinie and his government. Also, any other player characters who are political leaders who may in the future seek the crown will undoubtedly want it for themselves. Ulor Esinie has already agreed that the questors will keep the crown. He does not expect to get it. He does want the sword Corinbek and the armor that goes with it, if they are found.

There is probably more published information on this world than you will want to bother reading before you play. And there is even more information that is not published and is known only to the gamemasters, to be revealed when and if discovered by players.

Here is the first thing you might want to read:

http://nationsandempires6.blogspot.com/2007/02/war-of-duel.html

It is the main legend of the Lost Crown of Ilania. The crown has actually been lost once before and found again. This is the story of what happened after it was found and how it came to be lost for the second time. It also mentions how the Frayeth Empire was destroyed. The Frayeth Empire was in many ways a predecessor to the Zekresh Empire.

This document is on a web site called "Library of Scrolls" which contains a number of documents available in various libraries in the Zekresh Empire. We keep adding scrolls to the library from time to time.

This is the main page for background info on the game and the universe it takes place in:

http://nationsandempires1.blogspot.com/

Again, you don't have to understand all this stuff to play the game. Especially not on this quest. You can play the part of a warrior of the Trond tribes of the North who knows little or nothing of these matters, but is a superlative warrior and tracker and will learn about the world as he goes. There will be non-player characters on this quest who are very familiar with this world and can provide you with information you need along the way.

Oh, and another thing, if you play as a Trond, you have another advantage. The Tronds are unusually large. In fact, the word "Trond" means "giant". They are not really giants exactly, but they are usually more than six feet tall, sometimes over seven feet tall in a world where the average height is less than five and a half feet tall for men and the women are even smaller.

You don't have to be a Trond. There are many other nationalities to choose from. You are undoubtedly not familiar with them and, as one of our playtesters pointed out, we have not published a description of all of them in one place. That is in the works, but if you are interested in playing, we will provide a list of nationalities to choose from. It won't be every nationality in the world or even every nationality in the Empire, but it will be the ones most likely to participate in this quest.

Also, people can join the quest along the way. Even though most of the initial party of questors will be Tronds, people who join later are more likely to be from other nations.

For any of you who are more politically inclined and would like to play as a political leader, you can get a character and send a request to the Lord Chancellor of the Empire for appointment as Ulor (governor) of a province. Currently the Lord Chancellor is looking for candidates to appoint as Ulor of Glantogran province and Kaliskan province. Both of these are close to the main action of the game and to the other players.

Easier positions to get that would likely be stepping stones to higher office are these:

The Ulor of Nassavix Province is looking for a new senior advisor.
The Ulor of Kajakan Tros Province needs a Finance Minister.
The Ulor of Kajakan Tros Province needs an Agriculture Minister.
The Ulor of Kajakan Tros Province needs a Building Minister.

These two ulors are both player characters.

I must say, I've been to your website and I've been all over the place, reading up on rules and how to be a Ulor...I've checked the forums, the maps...very extensive. Obviously you've put a lot of work into this. But as someone who enjoys playing characters and writing stories, I'm having a hard time finding the descriptions I'd need to use my creative talents. Quite frankly, I'm unsure of where to begin.

To be perfectly honest, I don't know whether I should be inventing my own culture or if the game assigns me one. And if it assigns me one, I'd like to see a list of adaptable cultures. I don't like to be picky or finicky, and I admire the effort you've put into this venture...but these are things that I, not only as a player but as a writer (if only a mediocre one), need before I can continue.

Braveria, I realize it is difficult to figure out where to begin. That's the reason for this quest. It is a way to get into the game without having to try to understand all the stuff you've just been reading.

We do not expect you to invent a culture. You can pick one from those that exist in the game or you can ask to be assigned one if you don't know which one to pick. If you really want to make up a culture, that's not how the game is supposed to work, but we did make an exception on that once before and will do so again for you. Anything you make up about the game has to be cleared with the gamemasters, but there are some nations and tribes whose culture is not very well defined and could perhaps benefit from your talents.

One player was given permission in the past to make up some details of the Tavani tribe, (the Squirrel People).

Exactly what you are allowed to decide without game master approval is a boundary that we keep changing to allow players more and more flexibility and to minimize the amount of gamemaster time required to run the game. So experiment and we'll tell you if it's okay or not.

I suggest that you not get too worried about all this at first. Just get started with a simple character and explore the world a bit through this quest. If you get to where you understand things enough to be dissatisfied with your character, you can get a new one.

Okay, I have written up a list of some very basic information about every major nationality and tribe in the Empire. I didn't know what you wanted to know so I put in just some very basic facts about whether they are mostly farmers or fishermen or shepherds or whatever, plus some stereotypes about their personalities and a few other odd facts for some of them. Then, just for the hell of it since players may be interested in more mundane matters such as what weapons they will have, I listed the preferred weapons used by each tribe or nation that has any particular preference.

The problem is, this is an enormous list and this still only scratches the surface of information on each nation.

Before I post this, let me first propose a much more simple solution. Here are some very, very simple characters that players can play who are already going to be in the quest. Just pick one. It's that simple. Any who aren't picked will be non-player characters. After I post this, I'll post the list of nationalities for anyone who wants to create a character the hard way.

Onigata

It would probably be best not to try to play Onigata as a player character, but you should know who he is because he's likely to be the leader of the quest. Onigata caused this quest to be undertaken. He is a former shepherd from Ulawan Province in the Zekresh Empire. Ulawan is a very, very long way from Helmarie where the quest begins. About four months ago, Ulor Esinie of Helmarie issued a decree legalizing the public practice of unofficial religions in Helmarie Province. Previously the laws of the Zekresh Empire banned the public practice of any religion other than the official Zekresh religion. This decree touched off a whole political debate in the Empire which I will skip over for now. A powerful political faction in the empire called the "Reformists" was encouraging this reform. Other Ulors, including Ulor Vanimuk in far away Ulawan Province, issued a similar decree.

In Helmarie the decree didn't matter because Imperial rule there is so ineffective that hardly anyone's religion was being effectively suppressed anyway. In Ulawan, the situation was very different.

In Ulawan there were lots of religions that had been violently suppressed by imperial authorities for centuries. When Ulor Vanimuk issued his decree, all these suppressed religions came out of the woodwork and started preaching and building temples and rapidly increasing the number of followers they had.

One of the fastest growing religions to emerge in Ulawan was the ancient Questors of the Lost Crown. This cult is centered around the idea that someday the legendary Lost Crown of Ilania will be found or revealed by the gods and some worthy savior will wear it and save the world from sin and evil. Then everyone will live happily ever after, amen.

A leader of this cult, a man named Terim, collected donations and built a temple for this cult in Ulawan. No sooner was the temple built than it became clear that not everyone agreed with the traditional idea of the cult that the gods would reveal the crown when they were ready and there was no point in going to look for it. They also didn't agree with the idea that if the crown were to be found, that Terim should wear it and attempt to rule the world.

Several factions of the cult emerged and arguments turned to violent. A man named Dalganta and his followers seized control of the temple and urged the cult members to go look for the crown and give it to him so that he could overthrow the Zekresh Empire with its magic powers. Terim went to Ulor Vanimuk for help and Imperial troops and Terim's followers violently suppressed all rival factions of the cult and took back the temple.

Onigata is a member of one of the rival factions and found it necessary to flee the province to avoid being thrown in a dungeon. But once he was outside of Ulawan, it was not legal for him to continue to practice his religion openly. Onigata had heard that unofficial religions had been legalized in Helmarie so he went there even though it was a very long trip. Upon arriving, he began preaching and soon collected a small group of followers. Then he got the bright idea of organizing a quest to find the crown and he went to Ulor Esinie of Helmarie to ask for money and warriors to help in the quest. Surprisingly, Ulor Esinie said yes.

Now, other than Onigata, here are the characters planning to go on the quest.

Davarie
A Trond hunter and warrior. He has been carefully chosen by Ulor Esinie because he is one of the best warriors and trackers in all of Helmarie. He is armed with a bow, 20 arrows, a hunting knife and a traditional Trond war hammer. His skill with the bow is so great that he may be the very best archer in the entire known world. He has no money, but Ulor Esinie has promised to provide money.

Avarie
Younger brother of Davarie. A Trond hunter and warrior. He has been carefully chosen by Ulor Esinie because he is one of the best warriors and trackers in all of Helmarie. He is armed with a bow, 20 arrows and a knife. He has no money, but Ulor Esiniehas promised to provide money.

Asanie
A Trond hunter and warrior. He has been carefully chosen by Ulor Esinie because he is one of the best warriors and trackers in all of Helmarie. He is armed with a bow, 12 arrows, a hunting knife and a traditional Trond war hammer. He has no money, but Ulor Esinie has promised to provide money.

Lano
A Trond hunter and warrior. He has been carefully chosen by Ulor Esinie because he is one of the best warriors and trackers in all of Helmarie. He is armed with a bow, 12 arrows and a knife. He has no money, but Ulor Esiniehas promised to provide money.

Yanifon
A failed farmer from Helmarie of Slythian ancestry. He just joined the cult last week, but he wants to go on the quest. He has only a stout stick as a weapon and he is completely broke. He hopes this quest will solve his financial problems since the Ulor is promising to provide food and money for everyone who participates. Also, he hopes this will give meaning to his life which has mostly been a disappointment so far.

Sternin
A Foerfen hunter and warrior who was in Helmarie visiting relatives when he heard Onigata preaching and became interested in the Questors of the Lost Crown. He has not formally joined the cult, but he is interested in going on the quest. He secretly wonders if there would be an opportunity to get the Lost Crown for himself and perhaps use it to liberate the Foerfen people from rule by the Zekresh. Sternin is armed with a bow and arrows and a hunting knife. He also owns a hatchet, but he didn't bring it to Helmarie with him.

Inderia
The daughter of a Verronese merchant, she has just joined the cult a few days ago, but has already become a confidant of Onigata, the local cult leader. She wants to recover the Lost Crown and make sure it is used to help people. She is not sure anyone other than herself is sufficiently altruistic to be trusted with so much power. She is not a warrior and is unarmed, but she is young, beautiful and unusually headstrong and she almost always gets her way. Unlike the other members of the quest, she does have money because her father is wealthy.

Rondie
A Trond hunter who came to Kast Foramyva (the capital of Helmarie) to sell some furs to a merchant there and met his daughter Inderia who told him about the Questors of the Lost Crown. Rondie has only been a member of the cult since yesterday, but he wants to go on the quest. He has a bow and 14 arrows, a hunting knife and 19 Dovek coins that he just got paid for his furs.

Of course, Onigata is encouraging all members of the cult to come on the quest and money is not a problem because Ulor Esinie has access to vast amounts of money in the provincial treasury. So any number of other people could join.

Nationalities of the Zekresh Empire

Ridiculously Brief Summaries

Under the name of each nationality is their nickname, if they have one. Frequently this involves an animal that is their symbol and was or is considered their "totem animal" with religious significance. These nationalities ARE NOT animals, they are all human. The "Wolf People" for example, are not wolves or werewolves or anything of the sort. They are people descended from tribes that considered the wolf to be their sacred spirit animal and who strove to learn from the ways of the wolf. They are, however, humans, not wolves, not part-human part-wolf or anything like that. On the other hand, some tribes, notoriously the Mouse People (who are very short with prominent ears) and the Giant People (who are unusually tall) got their names because of physical characteristics they have.

Note that these are the common names these nations and tribes are known by in the Zekresh Empire. Often what the people call themselves is different.

I have highlighted certain nationalities in bold that are more likely than others to be present among those going on the quest. This is mostly due to geographic proximity, but in some cases due to other factors. The ones that are not geographically close to the starting point of the quest are more likely to join the quest later on than to be in Helmarie at the beginning. But, if you insist, theoretically someone from any of these nationalities could be in Helmarie wanting to be in the quest.

Trond
The Giant People
A bit larger than others. Hunters of the northern forests. Quiet and patient, but inclined towards wild rage if they lose their temper. They fight with warhammers and bows and arrows.

Aat
The Mountain Goat People
Shepherds of the mountains. Stubborn and independent, but known for common sense. They fight with slings and clubs.

Foerfen
The Wolf People
Hunters and herdsmen of the northern forests and fierce warriors. A strong sense of honor makes them generous to friends and ruthless to enemies. They fight with bows and arrows and hatchets.

Glant Ogra
The Red Hand People
Hunters of the nothern forests. Bitter and cynical, they are enemies of all their neighbors because of an ancient wrong done to them. They fight with bows and arrows and spears.

Baaniferian
The Moose People
Herdsmen and farmers. They are not very warlike, but traditionally fight with bows and arrows and war clubs.

Thalaning
The Deep Forest People
Farmers and hunters. They keep to themselves and are rarely seen outside their own lands. They traditionally fight with bows and arrows, spears and even blowgun darts.

Lolenstoorn
The Round House People
Farmers of the northwest coast of the Western Sea. Known for their polite manners and their love of dancing and ceremonies and, of course, because they live in large round houses. They fight with javelins and warclubs.

Eesleken
The Mouse People
Farmers of the northwest coast of the Western Sea. Known for their unusually small size and prominent ears. They are timid and usually keep to themselves, but they also stick together because their only strength is in numbers. They fight with javelins, warclubs and slings.

Verronese
The Bear People
Once they were hunters, but now they are farmers, tradesmen, seamen, merchants and bankers. They are proud and confident that the Zekresh Empire could not have been built without their help and but for one unlucky battle, would have been theirs to rule. Their traditional weapon is the battle axe.

Slythian
The Viper People
Farmers and fishermen of the North Peninsula. Their ancient kingdom became part of the Empire long ago. Known above all for secrecy and treachery, the archetypical Slythian warrior is the assassin armed with a dagger dipped in poison. This form of assassination is literally a religious experience for Slythians because it mimics the striking poison fangs of the Viper God, the worship of whom is the national religion of Slythia.

Frayeth
An ancient people whose Empire was destroyed in the War of the Duel about 2,000 years ago. They were destroyed by Prince Toralin of Corinweld (Ravenwood) after he temporarily recovered the Lost Crown of Ilania. The Zekresh people who founded the Zekresh Empire are mostly descended from Frayeth people. There is little difference in culture and language between the Frayeth people and the Zekresh people except that the Zekresh come from the city of Zekran, now the capital of the Empire. The traditional Frayeth weapon is the spear.

Zekresh
People of Zekran
The Zekresh people who founded the Zekresh Empire are from the city of Zekran which is now the capital of the Zekresh Empire. In ancient times they were fierce warriors and used special tactics in the swamps of their homeland to defeat the Zekresh Imperial Army. Their preferred weapons are the bow and arrow, spear, war club and axe. Their use of their traditional flat bottomed swamp boats propelled by poles in ancient wars was so effective that such boats were practically considered weapons themselves.

If Toopoxia and Braveria will choose characters, we have a third player who will also be joining us. I think three is certainly enough to get started.

While we delay, events are progressing in the world of the game and the road the quest must travel is getting more dangerous by the hour as you can see if you are still reading the forums for the main game.

Onigata has not chosen the best time to begin this quest, but the better time would have been sooner and it is too late for that now.

Thank you very much for all your hard work. Believe me, I will be using this nationality list later to create my Ulor character. For now I'll just get my beak wet and start simple. I'm going to go ahead and take the easy way out by picking one of the characters you've listed. Inderia sounds like an interesting part to play, so I'll go ahead and snag her up.

Okay. Braveria, you get to play Inderia.

The characters of Inderia and Yanifon are now taken. Yanifon will be played by someone I know who doesn't play NS and will be using my account to post. Toopoxia, if you want to play, just be the first one to post a claim to one of the other characters on this thread and you can go ahead and start without waiting for confirmation from me.

An in-character role play thread has been established at:

http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=521241

The game has now begun. Players may begin posting.
