Though Attica City never slept, the nation's leaders were fast asleep, the concerns of the Republic long gone from their minds. A pitch dark night was held at bay by a constant neon buzz as giant glass towers stretching into the sky. This metropolis, where the ancient world met the new represented the seat of power for the aging nation. Her main street a full ten lanes wide -designed to host the royal entourage- lead the path from the Palace of Athens, past the Great Treasury, alongside the Bastille of Pretoria, aside the most powerful headquarters of the nation's political parties, government agencies, foreign embassies, banks and historic landmarks, to the grandiose Senate House, housed high-up on the Acropolis.
In this ancient hall of power, a great conspiracy was hatched. Senior government figures had been meeting with factional leaders inside the ruling coalition and tonight was the night. The formal heads of the Liberal Party had adjourned to the Imperial City where President Hours was attempting to consolidate her power after numerous legal clashes with Emperor Bacchus, and mounting internal divisions within her party.
Flickering light from chandeliers older than the combined age of those assembled bathed the daunting chamber in an eerie light. White-robed men and women muttered softly as they entered the room, glad to converse after spending the week hiding in motels within Athens, so as not to alert the President of their presence in the city.
Those assembled were not the enemies of the governing Liberal Coalition, but rather her members, snuck in darkest night from the National Liberal Convention in the Imperial City to Attica, where they would unfold their great plan.
All fell silent as the Speaker entered the chamber, black robes flickering behind his imposing figure. He raised his hand to silence the crowd, to his right the Clerk rushed in with a decree signed by 'four magistrates of good repute' allowing the Senate to convene without the authority of either the Emperor or the President.
"The Member for Voiller North, the Most Honourable Minister for National Defence and Internal Security, has the floor! ORDER!" he splutters as he slams an antique staff into the floor, an act which send shivers down the spines of even the most seasoned Senator.
"The move to vote Bill 0015478-AOX-25 'The Emergency Powers Act' with the enactment clause to read as follows "This House relieves the Government-elect, the Senate of the Republic, and all levels of the Judiciary of all duty and authority. The final act of authority for this House will be the installation of a caretaker government until such time as the term of office for the House expires" Her words fall on the ears of those assembled with weighty discourse, but are solemnly observed as they rise from their seats in unison.
"So motioned... those in favour declare it so!" another blow of the staff
"AYE!" the Senators declare in unison.
