OOC: This is a continuation of the 5 year mission of the Starship Enterprise. I'm now doing the final year of the voyage. This is a completely open RP.
IC: The Enterprise was moving at warp factor 7 along the edge of the Romulan Neutral Zone. She had been exploring space on this far edge of the Alpha Quadrant.
Kirk found himself bored by the work his twenty-four year old vessel had been doing the past few weeks.
He then realized that being bored wasn't so bad. This duty of cataloging celestial objects was still better than the excitement of combat. At least this duty didn't often end with him performing funerals.
Kirk thought about getting up and grabbing a snack in the mess, but he decided against it and instead remained in his chair.
An hour had passed when Spock noticed something on the scanner. "Sulu drop out of warp and continue on impulse power," ordered Kirk. "Scotty, I need you to boost power to Spock's scanners."
The orders were carried out, but Spock couldn't find the contact again. He knew he saw something there for a moment, but it was gone.
Kirk had no evidence to suggest what the object was, but he did know he was along the Neutral Zone. With the exception of the Bird of Prey incident 3 and a half years before, this area of space had been quiet in the 100 years since the Romulan Wars.
The Enterprise searched the area for hours, but she found nothing. Kirk ordered her to resume her original course and speed.
The Constitution class starship moved at warp for just a moment when Spock saw the blip again. The Enterprise once again came out of warp.
"Any idea what it is Spock?"
"I have no scientific data Captain," responded the Vulcan. "I wouldn't jump to a conclusion, but we might have a cloaked vessel near us. I can theorize that we are only picking it up when it drops in and out of warp. Perhaps we first picked it up when it came out of warp after transitting the neutral zone onto our side. This possible contact may have once more been picked up when it went to warp speed to follow us."
"Why didn't you pick it up again when we just dropped out of warp after picking it up?" inquired Kirk.
"Dropping out of warp thew our sensors off balance momentarily. In that short time, the possible trailer's signature would've already been gone if it indeed followed our move."
"Is that just a guess Spock?" asked Kirk.
"Yes it is," responded Spock.
"Checkov, go to red alert," ordered Kirk. Spock rarely ventured out a guess unless he was fairly sure. Kirk was now operating under the assumption that the Enterprise was being trailed.
In most cases, it wouldn't be an issue, but if it was indeed a Romulan vessel, then it would be violating the terms of the peace treaty of 100 years ago. This would be a serious incident. Since the Enterprsise was on her side of the zone, she was free to fire.
"Sulu, prepare aft phasers and fire directly astern," ordered Kirk. The chances of hitting the trailer were slim, but it might spook the target. Kirk had yet seen a vessel that could fire when cloaked. If the vessel was going to respond, she'd have to drop her cloak.
