OOC: FT Populations

Okay, so I'm basically really really new to FT, so please don't totally murder me. I've noticed that there are a lot of FT nations who like to jack up their population, but then there are a horde of others who consider the practice taboo. You can sort of see why, since it's kind of unfair to the FT nations who have been here for so long and rp'd for a while and stayed active for so long to get such large populations. But then it's also easy to see the arguments of the nations who do jack up their numbers. You can't realistically expect to have a population of a mere three billion populate an entire system or sector, let alone a planet (unless it's quite a small planet). So here's my proposal. How about trying to standardize some sort of formula which will dictate how much we can increase our population by, that way the older nations get the population advantage they want and deserve, while younger nations that want to be able to control sectors, etc. are able to?
No. Too much work for something people won't follow.

You could if you wanted, but its easier to just keep it as it is, Rp with those you you agree with in terms of population etc. However in FT im sure you can survive with relatively fewer people, small MT NS nations do it, and in FT you can have a lot of tech backing you up...
When we say we "control" sectors and systems, it's more like we....how to put this....for example, back in the 1700-1800's, Europe divided up Africa amongst themselves and for a while, they did not send colonists to some of these areas. It's kinda the same way here, we populate our main country "area" but we exert control over other areas, be they lightly or heavily populated. It is up to each person. Besides, if we did follow a formula, it would take YEARS in real life for someone to get enough ships to bother getting out of their system. I don't think anyone has that much patience. Also, we all don't always agree, so as Godular said, some would find it too much work, or resent the fact they can't do things their way.

The thing about FT, unlike a lot of other timelines, usually is you make up plenty of stuff. Like my FT, I encompass one huge solar system, and that is it. population means little, with the exception of how many ships you have, or how many troops you can have. Do not worry so much about statistics, and just try to have fun. RPing is about the story, not so much about facts, especially in FT.
For instance my nation uses Battlestar galactica tech, with some upgrades, due to people sharing their tech with me (which I do appreciate :) ). I am "low-tech" because I find it fun to be outgunned and out numbered, especially when I come out on top. There are some nations with a population of 10 million that use higher tech than I do, because they find it fun. Fun is the key word. Getting bogged down in too much data can detract from the story. Do not worry, just get an idea of what you want, and just jump in.
People may disagree with this approach, just do not god-mode, keep it realistic within "the suspension of disbelief" and follow RP ettiquitte and you will be fine.

The general rule in FT is that your civilian population can be as big as you want it, you can RP control of an entire Galaxy if you wish, as I do. However, you cannot bump up your military stats to anything greater than your main NS page population will allow.
It's pretty much one thousand ships to a billion people in population.

Heh, not everyone RPs a giant population in FT. The population of the FT version of Axis Nova is actually much smaller than that of the PMT one due to my backstory.

The First Star Empire currently has a population of about 270 million including AI, a number that is slowly declining. Its "ships" are beings of sentient energy melded with metal shells and consoles. A large population is not necessary to succeed in FT, if you're creative enough; for instance, I believe one mod puppet has a total population of 4.

being a 03 nation I have a large population to begin with so I try and balance it out with my nation being located in another galaxy other then the Milky way. So the forces people see while engaging me or with whom I am aiding only see " Explorationary forces".

I tend to accept the 1 mil - 1 capship rule, and don't particularly bother about civilian population. My civvy population is only around two or three billion - we're just really, really efficient with what we do.
