The following is to assess ooc interest – don’t bother posting ic you’ll be laughed at.
My nation is currently undergoing a bit of internal civil unrest. There is another thread on the forum if you’d like to comment on it. What I would like to happen in that thread is have some of my feudal lords look to outside entities to bank roll their war efforts.
What I don’t want is government loans or bonds. I would like is for an ooc agreement from a few countries to have their private interests become economically intermingled with the fate of some of my feudal lords. I don’t care if its mutual funds, credit agencies, banks, or merely a large portion of your middle class’ stock portfolio. Heck it could be combinations of the above. If you wanted to give it a particularly ironic twist perhaps the pension plans of your countries teachers and social workers could be tied into it.
Allow me to expound; Otares is fracturing on feudal lines. Blood and nobility are basically causing some interesting rifts and it is now turning into a shooting war. The only faction who was truly prepared to deal with this kind of war on this kind of scale was that of the crowned prince. As a feudal country the lords pretty much control the resources on their fiefs. When I say that my country is feudal I mean that the economic system that accompanies it, i.e. serfdom, is in place – albeit with a few exceptions to allow for some urbanization.
This means the issuing domestic war bonds would be pointless. The peasants simply don’t have any capital. Foreign citizens do however. As the war starts rolling along I want these feudal lords basically indebting themselves to your private interests. War bonds, stock optioning, out and out loans, and the like. In fact if you can suggest more obscure ways to legitimately transfer money to these people I’d love to hear it. As the war ebbs and flows there will be a demand for more money – especially from the sides taking a beating. As such some of these lords will offer obscene interest rates, if only to save themselves. After all Otares has been a monarchy for centuries and most of these lords fully expect to be able to tax their own serfs and pay you back – eventually.
Now here’s the rub; while these are government debts and supposedly secure some of these feudal lords are going to no longer exist. The entirety of this thread is basically the story of how Otares becomes centralized. I want you to agree to put up A LOT of money – something in the range of between 3-7% your GDP, possibly more. I then want you to basically RP out your governments reactions as these private interests basically get pissed and whine to you to protect their government.
I’d like you to discuss it with me OOC but some of you I expect will want to militarily support some of your interests. Other will embargo and pressure others. And some of you (I hope) will be able to either sweet talk or cajole the crowned prince into assuming the debt – which is very realistic considering this shake up is supposed to be happening in a legal context.
Otares is a decent sized country by population – and huge when you consider resources. Not only that I make a point to pick my issues to keep my government in the frightening economic category – so its not completely useless to you to become intertwined.
The reason I want to do this is because I want to set the tone for future relations with your government. Is it a cool relation of economic convenience, out right hostility, subjugation, or perhaps cordial relations which might lead to future alliances and treaties?
