Far to many times had foreign forces had penetrated the sacred borders of the Clandonian homeland resulting in the destruction of the Clandonian Republic but the rebirth of a new land. Now it was time to prevent such an action again, on His Majesty's orders the task of constructing a huge defence network that would flatten any hostile advance. Using planners both foreign and home grown a network of underground defences had been constructed with the help of Vault Tech. The defences were interconnected to strategical installations such as the capital linking government and military leaders at a moments notice to the huge safe networks. The deepest defences were 10 miles down, acres of storage space for living facilities, storage in the event of nuclear war. The bunkers were accessed by heavy lifts that could transport aircraft up and down to the sub-surface runways where the RCPAF operated its strategical nuclear deterrent and many of its 'Black Projects' operated from. The Ministry of Defence had spent vast amounts of money both from public funds and with a large amount of private investment around 40% for the guarantee of companies being able to continue in a post nuclear war environment with the safety that their brightest and most talented employees, engineers, scientists, doctors, politicians, academics would be able to form a new nation. The focus was along the Midlonian border, fears of invasion from the West were sound due the movements and the disapproval of Praetonian and Questerian allies basing forces in Clandonia. By order of the government the plan to move various army and air force units into a position where they could repel invasion.
Civilians unknown of the danger had been united by the patriotic sense and duty rallied round the King for the call to arms to defend the border, basing past fears into a new threat. The construction employed many workers, lowering unemployment and generating huge capital for the companies selected for the task. The entire system would eventually house an estimated 400 million people, just under half of the population with priority going to those selected in the event, those who were financially and academically inferior would not be allowed to enter, the government in a secret cross Parliamentary report would allow the under classes to die on the surface. Already a largely feudal country, many on the committees said this would create further division between rich and poor. Those willing to save their own lives and that of their families could pay a nominal fee, those earning bellow C$ 50,000 had no chance with only 4% of the population being in the income bracket. The military would in the event of crisis in which the likely hood of nuclear weapons being deployed send its forces underground, bombers and entire army groups could be stationed with their entire logistical support to carry on a war on the surface.
A special gun was chosen to be developed, designed by Imperial Defence and Space Systems its 100 cm calibre was chosen to rip through marauding enemy troops using huge explosive shells or small tactical atomic rounds. Four hundred such guns were to be commissioned with an order for a possible 200 more. Based in an ideal tactical range against a Midlonian advance, the guns were connected to the defence system and were fully protected against NBC agents and could take all but a direct nuclear or some sort of heavy earth penetrating weapon, lobbing out shells one every half an hour the gun would lob shells several hundred miles causing massive damage on anyone unlucky to be in its path. Sub terrain railways would supply the units the shells which were stored in deep munitions bunkers, to prevent accidental explosion the shells had the latest in computer control, able to arm them self in-flight. The logistical effort involved was low, each gun had a crew of around 500 men, selected from the best artillery brigades and regiments from the Royal Artillery and Royal Rail Gun units. The gun was named the King William VII as a design, each team had dedicated their gun to personal nicknames, often associated from wives and girlfriends who they missed while on the arduous and boring six month tours on the long border defences.
As the project neas completion, on inspecting the facilities His Majesty King William VII accompanied by Prime Minister David Sistilin was quoted to say, 'If these supreme defences are ever called upon, God help them smite down our enemies in battle.' In a simulated test firing, the guns destroyed 20,000 enemy tanks while preserving the quarantine of the primary lines, even if the main defences were knocked out or besieged it would enable other Clandonian units to have mobilised for battle, No one would ever take a square inch of Clandonian soil again.
