Question about FT Starship numbers

What is the accepted method for determine the number of military starships you have?

I have to ask this question because someone complained when I introduced my fleet. They stated that based on the size of my poplutation there is no way I could have the nubmer of ships I introduced.

Now, I am roleplaying a race, that placed themselves in suspended animation, for a billion years and are now waking up slowly to rediscover the universe around them. All my ships are actually sentient organic beings that I am including in my population.

I have made every effort to RP the sentience of my ships, and constantly point out any time I enter a new thread that they are organic. In one case I am even using a ship as the commander of my fleet.

I used the standard accepted practice of using 1% of my population as military. I then determined that 0.01% of my military would be military vessels, which leaves me with roughly 97 since my vessels are organic and are part of my population.

Is there something wrong with what I am doing here?

By not bringing an excessive number into any RP you join.

Wouldn't that be 193 ships?
193,000,000 * .01 = 1,930,000
1,930,000 * .0001 = 193

So you're saying that one in a million of your population is a military vessel?

On the other hand, if you said one in every ten million, you'd get 20 ships.

1k ships / 1 billion people is a good rule for average strength ships. Though you can reduce the ratio as you see fit if you want to RP 'stronger-ish' ships or some such.

No, I am talking about my military population, not my total population.

193,000,000 *10% = 1,930,000

1,930,000 * .01% = 97

Hence, I would conclude that a potention of 97 ships to be reasonable.

One thousand per one billion is one per million as well. Tremble in might at these mighty nations who find it easier to calculate how many ships they have per billion.

I think the point is that the fact that you have organic technology and living ships doesn't affect the number of ships you have as that number is based off population anyway.

Sadly, I'm quite poor at math, but let's do this again.

Your total population is 193,000,000. Ten percent of that population would be 19,300,000, so I'm guessing what you meant to say for the first equation was:

193,000,000 * 1% = 1,930,000 or
193,000,000 * .01 = 1,930,000

So far so good. The next equation appears to be off, somewhat:

1,930,000 * .01% = 193 or
1,930,000 * .0001 = 193

That's one per million, and it's fine. 97 in your fleet would give you a group of above average ships, and there's no problem with that.

Thanks for that correction my spreadsheet did something weird and needed to be corrected.

Glad to help.
