Platonika, capital city of Kravania

David Nickerson was known across all of Kravania as one of the nation's leading and most well known of writers. Kravanians of all ages knew of his writings and his poetry and so did many readers the world over.

However, David was being talked about in Kravania for very different reasons now.

Ever since the establishment of the totalitarian socialist system of Kravania's dictator, Stefan Fauore and the Kravanian People's Socialist Party (KPSP), David had been put under a large amount of pressure by the KPSP to join the party and to use his litery talents for the purpose of KPSP party propaganda. Despite this pressure to join the KPSP and to serve the government of Fauore, David had refused any offers made by the KPSP and the government.

After it became clear to the government that David would not join the party and use his career for the purposes of state and party propaganda, the government decided that it was best to leave him alone, given that David was extremely popular within Kravanian society and abroad, they decided that any backlash caused by Davids persecution would simply cause more trouble for the party and the state.

However, the party was itching for an excuse to use against David as a means of destroying his career and wiping out his popular following. The party had now found the excuse it had been looking for.

David's latest short novel was one that claimed to be based on David's own experiences as a younger man, in the time that followed the downfall of the former Humanist regime of Father. The novel included scenes of graphic sex between men and vivid descriptions of homoerotic desire, scenes which more or less described David's own experiences with men, thus outing himself as a gay man.

Given that erotic literature and homosexuality had been made criminal offence by the KPSP, this novel caught the swift attention of the censors and the dreaded secret police, the People's Directorate for State Security (PDSS).

In a dawn raid, PDSS agents broke into David's home, beating him unconscious nd throwing him into a unmarked PDSS van, where he was taken to a secret prison facility.

For over a week, David was subjected to all forms of torture, both physical and psychological, until his spirit was broken and his ability to grasp reality numbed.

Then, David was placed before a People's Court, where he had no access to any form of legal aid or the right to have a legal defence to argue his case in court.

Comrade Citizen David Nickerson is guilty of the following:

1.) Guilty of being a homosexual, in violation of the sexcrime laws.

2.) Guilty of acting upon his homosexual desires, in violation of the sexcrime laws.

3.) Guilty of writing, publishing, promoting and distributing literature of a sexual, pornographic and homosexual nature.

4.) Guilty of holding views and promoting views that are by their very nature, bourgeois, capitalist, imperialist, anti-proletarian, anti-state, anti-Kravanian, anti-party and counter-revolutionary.

5.) Guilty of causing grave offence to the noble character of the Great Kravanian Socialist Revolution, the Great Leader Comrade Stefan Fauore, the Kravanian People's Socialist Party and the ethical and moral character of our socialist society.

6.) Guilty of treason for past collaboration and espionage with several foreign imperialist nations. This court cannot name those said enemy imperialist nations nor can this court, for reasons of national state security, display the evidence of this plot.

With this, the People's Court of the Socialist Republic of Kravania hereby sentences Comrade Citizen David Nickerson to death by firing squad.

The execution of Comrade Citizen David Nickerson is to take place at 6 AM, ten days from now.

The recent trial and schedualed execution has me really worried about this man's human rights. Although we still wish to congratulate your nation on freeing itself from imperialist tyranny in principle, we unfortunately cannot express the same optimism regarding the particular variant of socialism you choose to practice. Frankly, you seem to have based things too much upon the example of Oceania from George Orwell's magisterial cautionary tale 1984; taking as moral imperatives the most uncompromising extremes of revolutionary militancy. Pray tell, are you seeking to leap to True Communism right away somehow? We would be impressed enough despite our skepticism if that were the case; which is why we would also like to send delegates, two from each of our five legalized progressive parties, to see your country for ourselves with an open mind.
Be assured, your dedication to the righteous struggle is not in doubt; only your sense of proportion therein. Ten immense MRLS launchers stand on their positions, and we see Kazansky grinning happily as the high-caliber rockets streak out into the evening sky. Kazansky nods and responds to the officer: “I thereby confirm the acceptance of the new artillery system into the Allanean artillery pool with an initial amount of ten launchers. Further purchases are to be made when Congress reconvenes after it's summer break. In the meanwhile, officer, can you look up Kravania on the StratComp database for me?”

While the decision to not execute the writer was made, we still feel that the policies of the Kravanian government are not realistic, and should be changed to be more society-friendly, if it hopes to prosper as a nation itself. With the people at odds with the government, the greatest potential for the nation will never be reached, especially if political freedoms are limited to where they are now. The fact that homosexuality has been deemed 'against the law' is a massive outrage, and until this is changed, the nation of Euroslavia does not wish to form diplomatic relations with a nation that won't even grant the most simple of human rights for it's people, which does include the right to ones' sexual orientation without being persecuted.
