History and System Details
The Imperial Commonwealth of Malkyer was founded during the Diaspora by refugees fleeing North America and the United Kingdom, as well as many of the wealthier communities in the British Commonwealth (Boers from South Africa, Australians, businessmen from Singapore, the Indian professional class, etc). Over time, the Commonwealth was established as a constitutional monarchy to govern the primary world, which was named Malkyer after a promised land mentioned in a novel favored by young son of the first Emperor, Alexei Áedán. Alexei was a soldier-statesman from the Pacific Northwest of the United States, of mixed Russo-Celtic heritage.
The Imperial Commonwealth has, for most of its history, maintained a strict neutrality in galatic affairs, though in recent decades calls for renewed extra-solar exploration and military build-up have issued from the Imperial Parliament.
Inhabitants of the Commonwealth generally refer to themselves as Malkyeri.

After several discussions with the Ato-Saran Federation, the Imperial Parliament ratifies and enacts the Akko Accords, which divide the unsettled Akko system between both nations.
Akko System:
Two Terrestrial Planets (Akko II and Akko V)
Four Gas Giants (Akko I, IV, VI, VIII)
1 Asteroid Belt
Malkyer gets Akko V and its four moons, Akko IV and its three moons, and one moon of Akko VI.
Ato-Sara gets Akko II, Akko I and its three moons, plus two moons of Akko VI, plus Akko VIII and its three moons
Mining rights on the asteroid belt are shared.
Ato-Saran Corollary:
1. Each nation agrees to help defend the other's possesions in the Akko system from external imperialism.
2. Pirates and smugglers caught operating in the Akko system will be extradited to their home nation for trial.
The Akko Accords, along with the Clay Doctrine of non-recognition for baseless interstellar claims, represent the first major diplomacy on the part of the Imperial Commonwealth in the new century.
The tiny rock of Bastion was one of a dozen small moons orbiting the terrestrial world of New Scotland, the second most populated settlement in the Eberly system after the homeworld itself. The moon itself was small, yet was composed of unusually dense materials, giving it a much higher gravitational pull that the other moons of New Scotland, or even of Malkyer itself. The extra gravity (almost 1.2G), in addition to a thin atmosphere and exceptionally rough terrain made Bastion an ideal training ground for the elite troops of the Commonwealth, specifically the Imperial Marines.
The principal Marine facility was a camp on the outskirts of Haven, the primary settlement and naval base on the moon. Inside Haven’s boundaries, the town was dominated by the monolithic Government House, the residence of the governor and the transit home for important off-world guests; usually officials from Malkyer. Inside the building, chemical scrubbers maintained a denser atmosphere than outside, in order to provide for the comfort of guests.
One such guest stood in his stateroom, an elegant affair decorated with real wood furniture, glass light fixtures, a bookcase…in truth, enough to make one think they were in a fine hotel in Whitefall or Persephone, rather than the sole instrument of government on a dusty, barren moon orbiting an equally dusty, barren world hundreds of thousands of miles from home. Giving a passing glance to the bookshelf as a servant set down tea, the guest arched an eyebrow and frowned. It was a sad comparison to the Royal Library in Persephone, which was said to hold a copy of nearly every work published by man before the Collapse, and of every work since.
The servant, having finished setting the tea service, mumbled a farewell in High Anglic before leaving the room. The guest grinned sardonically. High Anglic was the language of diplomacy and intellectualism within Malkyeri space; it was a dialect so archaic so as to be almost English. The majority of the Commonwealth’s five billion citizens spoke Low Anglic, as it was called by the egg-headed professors and self-important diplomats who used High Anglic at every opportunity. The servant was clearly one of the former, as planetary governors had an annoying habit of forcing their staffs to use High Anglic to give a semblance of culture to the frontier worlds.
Watching the dry landscape outside his window, the guest was interrupted by a throat-clearing cough behind him. Turning, he saw the lean face of William Sizemore, the Governor-General of Bastion. Sizemore was skinny; naturally so, as the high gravity of Bastion meant that the simple act of walking up a staircase was a workout. He was a pale man, though so were most who didn’t live on Malkyer. The binary red giants Sol and Mote gave little light and less heat to the frontier.
“Henri tells me you asked to see me, m’lord?” Sizemore took the cup of tea offered by his guest, and declined sugar.
Not speaking, the other man poured milk into his tea until it was a light tan color, and stirred in two lumps of sugar. Finally, he spoke. “Governor, this unpleasantness in the Aluzra Main is making certain elements of His Majesty’s Government, not to mention His Majesty’s Navy, nervous.” From here, he switched to Low Anglic, as if to emphasize a point to the Governor. “Naval Intelligence reckons we’ll conjure up some shiny Jump-2 ships in a few years. Could be that those ships’ll be needed for an expedition or two past Akko into more settled regions, or maybe down into subsector O. You’re to step up Marine training regimens up until that time. We’re gonna need them somethin’ fierce if it turns out this business in Alurza turns into all kinds of violence elsewhere. Think you can handle that for me?”
The Governor nodded. He looked as he wanted to speak, to say something else, but was cut short by the wave of a hand.
“That’s all certain folks want me to tell you, Govnah. This palaver’s done.” The Governor nodded, bowed slightly, and left.
Prince Samuel Áedán sighed as the door slid shut behind the Governor. There was much to be done over the course of the next decade. Much indeed.
