Hurtful Thoughts

As of 1898

History
In 1545 the Spaniard Yñigo Ortiz de Retez sailed along the north coast of New Guinea as far as the Mamberamo River near which he landed, naming the island 'Nueva Guinea'. The first map showing the whole island (as an island) was published in 1600 and shows it as 'Nova Guinea'.

The first European claim occurred in 1828, when the Netherlands formally claimed the western half of the island as Netherlands New Guinea. In 1883, following a short-lived French annexation of New Ireland, the British colony of Queensland annexed south-eastern New Guinea. However, the Queensland government's superiors in the United Kingdom revoked the claim, and (formally) assumed direct responsibility in 1884, when Germany claimed north-eastern New Guinea as the protectorate of German New Guinea (also styled Kaiser-Wilhelmsland).

[this is where history changes]
A civil war quicly broke out during 1897, started by a riot which was sparked by controversy over a saltpeter/gunpowder depot.

The colonists have been fighting at a loss due to lack of support from their homelands..

The Dutch are attempting to establish government posts along the West coast.

Economy:
Main exports:
Advanced Agriculture [since 1600's...] (coffee, cocoa, copra, palm kernels, tea, sugar, rubber, sweet potatoes, fruit, vegetables, vanilla; shell fish, poultry, pork , plus the ever present British drug, Opium... Taro and Sweet Potato make the staple diet)
Saltpeter (For explosives)
Lumber
Copper is mined to a small extent, mostly due to the lacking value of the material in 1898 and the ruggedness of the land.
Oil has yet to be found
Gold has been found, copper was just found as a side effect... Oil will follow shortly...

[I]Imports:
The New Guinea diet lacks protien/meat, and therfore, they import this at high cost, or resort to cannabalism...

Notes:
Pretty much, until a certain scientist learns how to make massive qantities of nitrogen based explosives out of thin air, NG is an important military asset, both as a forward naval outpost and a munitions supply base, it also hasd a rather large natural harbour...

Papua New Guinea is richly endowed with natural resources, but exploitation has been hampered by rugged terrain and the high cost of developing infrastructure. Agriculture provides a subsistence livelihood for 85% of the population. Mineral deposits, including oil, copper, and gold

Population: Unknown, as the island is for the most part, uncharted...
2 million estimated.... (actually 3 to 4 million is closer [including Indonesian claimed New Guinea])

Military Presence:
Germany and Britian have a battalion of soldiers garrisioned to instil peace, along with a self raised militia comprising of 5,000 members.

(The British and German units are mostly Navy/Marine personel tasked with protecting their merchant ships)

The Dutch has been reportedly making inroads into the West coast with an armed Brigade...
(They actually did this in 1898, and the groundwork was already laid out before then..)
