After the Congress of Vienna, Switzerland became again an independent state, with his neutrality recognized by the European powers. Since then the most recent armed conflict in the small alpine nation was a civil war, which lasted for less than a month, causing fewer than 100 casualties. The result was that the Swiss states were centered around a federal government, but with the cantons keeping the right to self-government on local issues. Switzerland has now eagerly adopted itself to the industrial revolution.
