***Esys45687: Eastern milky way, the rim***

The light of the distant star was dim near the edge of the system, the DCN shield carrier, Majesty of Human Intellect was on what seemed like a standard patrol, but they were interested in something in this system, something they had been searching for since a month after that wretched, cursed day.

Scientist Hallar Morohian was inspecting the data being gathered from probes, scans and sweeps of the dusky yellow gas giant they were orbitting.Diameter, one hundred and twenty three thousand two hundred and fifty six kilometers. Atmospheric composition, twenty five percent helium, seventy five percent hydrogen and a specific gravity of 0.72, less then water. Its massive outer layer surrounded many tens of thousands of kilometers, transforming in to a liquid hydrogen layer deep within the shifting clouds. The metallic surrounding its core would be a hefty prize, and was an important resource to the Tannelornian military. At first glance this ship would appear to be staking out a claim..but this was not the intention.

"This is it, we have found a suitable test world." Scientist Hallar noted to Captain Yula Heranika, she nodded and told the armsmen to activate the Urenbecht weapon, and find a path to the metallic core, approximately half way through its radius." she stated. Many of the Captains resented scientific missions, this one however struck a chord with many of the members of the Divine Celestial Navy. Many loved ones were lost forever to the DCN over their ancient homeland, this particular mission lent hope to those who sought justice. However the greater Federation government had placed an infinintessimally low priority on that particular system. It was a backwater with little hope of ever finding its way out of stagnation. So therefore, Scientist Morohian was using what little funding the scientist caste/naval engineer combine could spare for his project. The DCNT had given much of its funding over to the GTFOA, this had not lessened the fearsome ability of the knights, as the resources Tannelorn could now call upon were unprecedented in the history of the nation. Still barely a billion work hours had been granted to him, he was working with very little.

"Prepare the tritium injector rounds" the Captain called out. Hallar had modified the Urenbecht weapon to deliver solid five ton chunks of tritium in a burst at much lower speeds. One hundred tons of the material was available as the weapon payload for each burst, however he only had about a hundred and twenty five tons of the material.

The ship shook gently as the cannon fired over and over again, the precise timing of the rounds and the calibrations for recoil compensation through the space time conduit were carefully controlled by a specialised team of Mentats. After fifteen seconds the firing stopped. "Prepare antimatter catalyst." the next round would be fired precisely where the last rounds had fired, the specially modified antimatter shell had its density reduced to carry a larger payload of the volatile material. It was stowed in a specialised, vector trapped hold on the ship, in case of premature detonation.

"Prepare Urenbecht catapult for immediate activation upon pentration of the liquid hydrogen layer, proceed to approximately three AU from target, there we can observe from relative safety." Scientist Morohian stated casually, it was after all his device. His sharp, angular features were framed by the long blonde hairs that fell from his ponytail.

The Captain looked over at him, her elven ears twitched slightly in anticipation of his command. This was an incredibly dangerous mission, but her husband and son would be avenged, there was no other course of action that could lead to justice. If they failed, everyone on this ship knew they would be joining loved ones.

She saw his indication of readiness, she nodded in return."Fire the Morohian round." she ordered. As they did they felt the thrum and vibration as the reactors injected more of the material, preparing to activate the energy intensive system while trying to maintain control of the space time conduit the shell rode. "Impact Captain." Armsmen Mikhail Arenetiev stated. "Activate Urenbecht catapult, get us to safe distance now!" The Captain shouted as the weapon colum disentegrated in the backlash of the massive antihydrogen/antitritium reaction started deep inside the planet. They slipped effortlessly in to their own space time conduit and rode it away from the planet as fast as possible. Thirty seconds later they slipped out in to real space and started to examine the results of the test. They could watch the light from the beginning of the incident to the end, and the scientists and mentats watched in wonder at the spectacle they were seeing. Morohian frowned softly. The test had failed.

The planet seemed to catch fire even as its mass was being reduced, after the initial flare it started to collapse in on itself. All in all it took about three minutes for the massive gas giant to die. However, it had died.

"Examine the data, find out what went wrong." Scientist Morohian stated angrily. The crew was impressed at the destruction they had levelled against the world, many of its tiny moons were drawn in to its destruction as was the heavy ring system. "Went wrong?" Captain Yura asked. "The planet and its moons were destroyed!" she stated. "We only ignited the atmosphere, fusion reactions inside the metallic layer only encompassed the immediate areas we struck, perhaps two thousand kilometer radius, the rest ignited." she looked at him, then remembered her first year technical schooling. She had remembered lessons on antimatter being used as a catalyst for fusion weapons of extreme power. A look of horrifying realisation marred her beautiful face. "What were we trying to do, Hallar?"

"Fusion through radiologic compression on a massive scale."
she looked at the scientist in a new light. This mans children would have made fine strategic mentats for the navy, he was a genius.

"Variables that were not accounted for as well as far too little primer were the cause for the failure of the mission." he sighed softly. This work would not be completed on this budget in his lifetime. He was about to go back to work when a thought occured to him.

Scientists were allowed to do whatever it took to realise projects that would benefit Tannelorn, therefore they could seek out those allies that were sympathetic to his cause. He retreated to his chambers, having a drink of vodka to calm his nerves. He replayed the death of the gas giant again and again. He would not send this to his superiors, they would consider this enough. This was nothing compared to what this project could realise. He turned to his on ship communicator and patched it through main DEM communication channels.

He sent a transmission to a man he had met long ago, back in that hated system, they had discussed antimatter and fusion technology at length during diplomatic processes. The Fedral Union scientist in question had left him with an adress to reach him at, through some relaying he was sure his message would reach him.

Greetings old friend, I have a most..interesting proposal for you and your team, a great work that we both have a vested interest in, please reply as soon as possible

The Fedral Union government was actively working on a program that coincided with their own idea project, and would likely give far more funding to his counterpart then his own government would. He sat back..and waited for a response. To pass the time he would monitor the catastrophic damage that the loss of a large Gas giant in an unstable, giant to the rear configuration system. So far, the planets had started to move in much more random vectors, as the heavier gas giants before it started to plow through the orbits of the smaller terrestrial worlds in its path to the sun.

Even if the experiment failed, they still had quite the weapon to work with. He grinned softly.
