Its America, in 1959. Korea is split in two, people are afraid of the commies, but the economy is doing fine. The wonderful era of the cookie cutter houses, when American made cars were something to be proud of. The Interstate Highway System is in its infancy, but the armies of travelling salesmen have taken to the vast open plains of asphalt.
One such knight of the open highway is an eccentric salesman known as 'Slick' Samuel S. Stallone Smith, aka 'Smitty'. Working for the 'American Vitality and Spirits Corporation of America', selling 'Miracle Tonic'. Not much is known about him, and his stories tend to vary with time. He has just been run out of the state of Alabama (the only consistency in his stories is that he was doing the running).
With no family to speak of, no money, no inhibitions, and no desire to go to prison, Smitty takes to the open highways with nothing more than his car, a few meager possesions, and a seemingly endless supply of miracle tonic, who will he meet on his voyage across America?
I'm thinking this will be a combination of Easy Rider and The Decameron (Basically, a modern version of The Canterbury Tales). There is no real direction, and I'm looking for any character, so log as they have a good story to share. For reference, this is starting on the Alabama-Tennesee state line. I figure that Smitty will begin aiming to get to San Francisco, but this can and will probably change (He will have a 'cousin' in Guadalajara, Mexico, if things get too hot). If you need direction, here are some character options:
Misc. Hitchikers (Hippies, criminals, poor war veterans etc.)
Police
Townsfolk-though I plan on having this be mostly on the road.
Anyone, so long as they are mobile and have a good story
I plan on this being more story-oriented, ie-heavily dependant on stories told by characters who get picked up, possibly encounter elements from their past on the way.
I also plan on the opening scene involving him stealing a car. Someone can be the unwitting passenger.
