What is the Confederation?
The Commowealth Steel Confederation is an organisation representing Praetonian companies involved in the manufacture of steel and related products. Members of the Confederation include coal and coke producers, companies that smelt and refine iron and steel and companies that process steel. The Confederation is currently aiming to promote the expansion of the Praetonian steel industry abroad.
Why allow the Confederation's members to expand into my country?
The steel industry is integral to any modern economy. The material is used in the manufacture almost all goods, and easy and economical access to steel is vital for the long term sustainability of manufacturing industry in a country. Contrary to popular belief, steel production is neither low-skilled nor 'old fashioned'. Rather, it is a modern industry highly dependent on scientific advances that employs a skilled and well-paid workforce.
Won't this cause damaging pollution?
Steel has to be produced somewhere, and it is more environmentally friendly for it to be produced close to where it is used rather than being shipped in, which is polluting in itself. Furthermore, Praetonian steel companies use advanced, efficient techniques that minimise pollution and waste. We are happy to build away from cities, and any infrastructure required will be built and owned by Confederation companies if it is needed. The Confederation's companies will redevelop former sites after their useful lives have come to an end, leaving no trace of their presense.
What is the Confederation looking for?
The Confederation is looking for countries which have large local deposits of high-grade iron ores and coal. These are relatively common, and most large countries have some such deposits. We are also interested in countries which have a business environment low in taxation and bureaucracy. We will also consider buying foreign steel companies if an attractive offer is made.
