Summary: The Federal Democratic Republic of Peru and Bolivia was the result of unification efforts between the governments of Peru and Bolivia in the 1960s. Following the overthrow of authoritarian Presidente Alberto Ken'ya Fujimori in 2001 by the Ejército de Liberación Nacional, a movement that rose to prominence in the mid-1990s, the country has been led by yet another Japanese Presidente, ex-ELN leader Aoki Kikujirō. Despite significant anti-corruption reform and programs to improve the welfare of the people, Presidente Aoki is criticized as being even more authoritarian than Fujimori, one of their main points being his constitutional ban on all political parties from participating in government. Many others, however, continue to support his socialist policies, and he has remained in power with a fair amount of stability. It is yet to be seen whether that will last...

Presidente: Kikujirō Aoki Uetō (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f5/TakesiKitano.jpg)

The President serves as Peru-Bolivia's head of state and government, and is directly elected by the people for a six-year term, with the possibility for re-election for one contiguous or discontiguous term. Pending a petition with enough signatures, a recall referendum may be held three years into the president's term to terminate his presidency immediately. The last time this happened was in 2005. The effort failed, with 65% of the country voting for Aoki to continue his term.
Presidente Aoki extended his powers further after his re-election in 2008. He is now able to rule by decree for an indefinite amount of time an can dissolve both the federal People's National Assembly or the PNAs of Bolivia and Peru under certain circumstances. He has used his rule by decree to enact sweeping socialist reforms within the country.

Asamblea Popular Nacional

The People's National Assembly is the the federal legislative body of the country. Both Peru and Bolivia have one as well, for legislation within their respective borders. While the two constituent republics of Peru-Bolivia generally have the same sort of socialist laws, there are some differences. For example, Bolivia continues to outlaw possession and use of marijuana, while just across the border in Peru, it is all legal, so long as you're 18.
The Peruvian legislature contains 120 seats, while the Bolivian legislature contains 157. The Federal PNA contains 265. Because of the article in the Constitution of Peru-Bolivia banning all political parties, every single member of all three legislatures, who are all directly elected from election districts within Peru and Bolivia, are non-partisan. Most hold socialist beliefs similar to Presidente Aoki's.
