Siap Tribune International Edition
This morning, at approximately 4:30 am Esmund Standard Time, a joint operation was launched by Siapian Customs and The Siapian Intelligence Network Operations Detatchment Alpha, with Specialist Paul Kesson of the Siapian Intelligence Network commanding the operation, to execute a search warrant to investigate an abandoned pitchblende mine on Doghead island. The island is technically part of The Community, but has no residents and is located 200 km from the shores of The Community. It was a common hideout for smugglers until about ten years ago when it was used for weapons testing. The island was most recently used by the private mercenary company "St. Michael's Detective Agency", who in a statement released in response to this incident admitted that they had not used the island in some time. Charges of negligence are being levelled against said company.
The operation was described as an "Outright [blasphemous] failure." By the operations commander. "The mine itself is almost one hundred and fifty years old. The engineering was very sophisticated." Siapian forces were hindered by "An...overwhelming number of combatants in the mine...combined with severe structural damage initiated by the entry." So far the body count has been totalled to 40 "30 combatants and 10 scientists", the majority of whom were not killed immediately killed in combat, but succumbed to blood poisoning from the fumes in the mine. So far, only ten scientists and twelve combatants are in custody and are currently being treated at an undisclosed location for radiation poisoning. A total of 25 kg of weapons grade uranium was seized, and four tanks containing five hundred gallons of heavy water each were destroyed. "And the facility is bathed in radiation from the reactor components and buried under pitchblende, and radon is seeping into the main facility." Kesson had to say. Excavation into the facility will begin this week, however "Its a radioactive underwater lake, carbonated with radioactive gas, buried under radioactive rock. We won't have anything from there for quite a while.
No official statement was released, but sources inside The Council believe this belonged to the Arms Dealer known only as "Cassius". There were no Siapian Casualties, however fourteen individuals are being treated for radiation poisoning.
