The Philippines Protectorate has become engulfed by Soccer Fever! Though it took time to catch on, the spirit of the fans young and old, new and dedicated has pushed the Protectorate into the World Cup and the players are making a show of it.
The Protectorate has given birth to three main teams: New Zealand, Taiwan, and the Philippines. Each nation draws from their own island while the remaining smaller islands are split to allow for each team the most equal draw. Each team began the season prior somewhat shaky. However that is normal for new teams to the world stage, especially when this sort of adventure has been dormant for so long. Yet each team, dedicated and hard working came into the qualifying round swinging and never looked back.
Now all three teams find themselves in the World Cup meaning there is a great chance the Cup could be coming home to an Island near you! With the first match day already finished its looking that much better.
In Group B action, the Philippines defeated the favored Russian team two goals to none. The Philippines jumped out to an early lead as Alvin Noel the 29 year old right forward took a pass from Rizaldo Magtanggol off the head putting it by the diving Russian keeper. Twenty three minutes later Nelson Ripley split two Russian defensemen allowing for Captain Reynaldo Rolando to tally another one. Though things heated up as the game progressed, there was no more scoring. Goalie Kobus Cornelius had an amazing game, at one time stopping 6 shots in a time span of 2 minutes. He was able to organize a stern defense and held off the Russian scoring machine.
Alvin leads the team in goals with four. Reynaldo Rolando leads the team in assists with 5.
In the next group over, Group C, there were some less happy endings. Taiwan played a hard fought match against East Timor but couldn’t find the back of the net. Four minutes before the first half was over left fullback San Ning took a penalty in the box giving Timor a penalty shot which they drilled home. Head coach Mie Xueue said after the game, “It was an unfortunate call and a stupid penalty but the game wasn’t decided by that in the end…we had plenty of chances to tie but couldn’t finish.”
However in Group D New Zealand captured the win against Maldives 2-1 in what was probably the most nail biting game of the day. The first half was scoreless with goalie Davie Linton putting up a solid wall. It wouldn’t last though as three minutes in a defensive breakdown allowed Maldives to take the lead. Things got physical as Loyd Ralph left the game with an injury and a red card. Coach Lorie Christmas later said after the match, “Things might have gotten a little out of hand but that’s the game…that’s what happens when you put two world class teams on the same field wanting the same thing.”
New Zealand got pumped after the incident and netted their first goal by Paora Tama. The time ticked down and the teams became reckless looking for that win. With both teams nearing exhaustion it was Captain Mickey Slade that found the back of the net in extra time.
Mickey Slade leads the team in scoring and assists with 4 goals and 4 assists.

Prospects for moving on to the Quarterfinals:
In Group A, CWAA leads, with Sharina and TG6R trailing on draws. If the CWAA draws or loses their next match against TG6R, they will have to hope that Sharina and Scandinavia pull out a draw, or that Sharina loses by a small margin. TG6R advances with a win, or a tie and a loss by Sharina. Sharina advances on similar grounds. Scandinavia will need the most luck to advance, as they much not only win their game against Sharina, but they will also need to win by a significant margin. Given the close competition, that isn't very likely.
In Group B, the United Caucasian Republics Iranian Team and Philippines have both eliminated Poland and Great Romeo - the point in contention is the rights to advance on top of the group. Great Romeo and Poland will nonetheless have a hard match to fight, as it's more for pride than for rights to continue in the World Cup Tournament.
In Group C, the situation is pretty tricky, as the two main contenders are tied at the moment. ALM's must win the next match by good margin to get on top of the Group - but a tie will send them through, regardless of who wins the Cameroon-East Timor match. Cameroon has an easier match-up, needing only a win to secure the lead [unless ALM gains in GD]. A tie will also send them through, regardless of who wins the ALM-Taiwan match. For East Timor, it's a must win situation in order to advance, and Taiwan - with their loss to Cameroon - makes a disappointing early exit. Their next match against ALM will be a matter of pride nonetheless, and if they win it, there is a chance that ALM will not advance as well.
In Group D, Kopparbergs Middle East has secured their ticket to the World Cup, likely at the top of their group, while Maldives also makes an early exit, with the last match against the top seeds tomorrow. For the two middle contenders, it's a delicate situation. New Zealand needs a win or a tie to advance, since GD will carry them on in 2nd place. For the United Caucasian Republics, it's a must win, since a loss or a tie will not procure enough points to advance.
In all, our analysts are making a tentative prediction of the Quarterfinals matches:
Match 1 [1A vs 2B]:
CWAA vs UCR-Iran
Match 2 [1C vs 2D]:
Cameroon vs New Zealand
Match 3 [1B vs 2A]:
Philippines vs Sharina
Match 4 [1D vs 2C]:
Kopparbergs Middle East vs ALM
* These predictions are not guarantees or promises that the results will happen in this manner; they are mere reports of speculation, on which no outside authority is permitted to use to fix or establish numbers [i.e. gamble].

OOC:
For future reference:
Our top two goalkeepers are Vladimir Stojković (Serbia) and José Porras (Costa Rica); neither are Russian. Stojković was in for the match.
None of our four defensemen in the match were Russian. In fact, there are no Russian substitutes in our roster either.
We only have one Russian in our offense line-up: Dmitri Sychev.

Stars shining into the Quarters
The two teams that have made a serious impact in this World Cup must be the UCR-Iran and Kopparbergs Middle East. Both teams have swept through their groups, gathering a significant number in goal difference. Kopparbergs leads the World Cup currently with 11 goals scored and remains the one team to contest in the finals. Of course, both teams face formidable challenges ahead in the Quarterfinals. Kopparbergs will be facing the Indomitable Lions, who have only allowed one goal in their three matches in Group C, and the UCR-Iran team will contend against Sharina. Cameroon was originally slated to be at the top of their group, but failed to win their last game against East Timor. Nonetheless, the ALM team has the challenge to beat out New Zealand, which has been rather spectacular in Group D, losing only to Kopparbergs. And finally, the hosts TG6R have managed to show some steam in their last match against CWAA, coming out on top by goal difference. They will face the Philippines, which likewise only lost out to UCR-Iran.
In all, we expect to see some very potent football played in the final stages, into the Quarterfinals and the Semifinals. We wish all teams the best of luck in the Elimination Round, for the ultimate chance to win the greatest prize.

All throughout the Great Sixth Reich, people are waiting anxiously for the final match of the World Cup, to be held in Olympiastadion in Berlin. The Olympiastadion will clearly be at its full 74,176 capacity, filled with enthusiastic supporters of the Monocracy's National Association Football Team. Miroslav Klose currently has five goals for his team, a feat that will likely make him the adidas Golden Shoe winner.

From Tehran to Tabriz, parties are being planned for game night. Many of these parties will stay up late into the night just to watch the game in real-time. The UCR-Sports, the nations largest Sports Channel, has decided to run the game in real-time and has dispatched camera men and reporters to TG6R. Even people in Caucasus Republics are getting excited about the chance of a World Cup win for the country. All this celebration is tempered by the Deaths in Tiblisi.
The UCR Government has decided should the UCR-Iran team win, that they would receive Free Education for life, for them and there families.

From Schenectady to Southern Sardinia to Hamburg to Longyearbyen to Riga to Malé to Díli to the Midway Islands, citizens of the Monocracy are planning to watch and cheer for the Monocracy's team late into the night. Reich News Network will broadcast the game live throughout the Monocracy via satellite in 1080p High-Definition.
The Monocracy has also increased the current prize for if our team wins to include free education in the new national university education system for all family members of the team members and a free vacation to a destination of their choice.

And the Final Score is!!!
TGR 2-0 UIR
Congratulations to TG6R, for winning to the inaugural World Cup! Best of luck to the UCR-Iran team, as they have certainly made a great show for the World Cup, and despite the lack of publicity, it's been a fascinating season.
Because of this, Season 2 has officially started!!!
Because of that, we've now got to decide who's going to be the second season World Cup Host, and unlike last time, where the candidate fields were all wide open, the selection pool is limited this time. So here's the spiel!!!
TG6R
UCR-IRAN
KOPPARBERGS-MIDDLE EAST
NEW ZEALAND
... were our finalists. Therefore, only they have the opportunity to run as candidates for the World Cup this next season. However, since TG6R has already hosted this season, TG6R will not be eligible to continue as a candidate and may choose ONE!!!!!!!! other country to take his place. He cannot choose himself, but he doesn't need to qualify someone else to take his spot, in which case, there would be 3 teams competing for the Hosting rights. And the candidate boxes close this Wednesday at 0000GMT [roughly 48 hours], I will open THIS THREAD to the votes, so we can get on to doing better things, like get our teams prepped up for World Cup II [in 4 weeks!!!].
And now that you should know who won the World Cup by now, I will be posting the ranks for Season 2 in the main thread [those who have no points will be absolved from having a rank instead of taking the lowest seed], and you can see how much your team fared against the other teams [as always, the teams that play the most are the ones that rank the highest, but not always the case...].
And vote for your candidates now!!!! 1st Round voting ends next weeks [roughly 7 days to get your votes in]!
And Season 2 is officially open to any friendlies, invitationals, and other wonderful sporting events. All friendlies must be declared in the main thread:
http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=512967
Thanks to all who participated! Let's hope this season is better than the last one.
