Society and Government
The Blubs are a race of strange little green blobs with an outwardly friendly demeanor, eyestalks, mouths and tentacles that serve as arms and other functions. A typical Blub is about 3 feet tall and just as wide although dimensions often vary due to a Blub's natural ability to alter their shape.
Blub society is a fairly communal one, its governing body a republic formed by a council of the wiser Blubs who are selected by towns to travel to the capital for governing business. For the most part, the decision-making council stays out of the affairs of the common Blub and exists primarily to oversee the duties of maintaining roads, public works, trade, foreign relations, military and other such state matters.
Religion and Population
The Blub Empire is made up of approximately 29,500,000 individuals usually existing in family homes of between 2 and 10. Many live alone, but for the most part the Blubs stay at home until they find a suitable mate to wed. Blub wedding ceremonies are important affairs often lasting eight or more hours from beginning to reception.
Blubs are for the most part monogomous and worship the Blub deity, which is generally unpronouncable in the common tongue.
Culture and Economy
The Blubs get along well together, while certain aspects of the common society perch very close to ideal socialism, they maintain a very rugged capitalist economy. While helping out your neighbor is well and good, it is just as good to work hard and earn things for yourself and your family.
Taxes are at a flat rate of 15% of employed earnings - meaning that bartering is not taxed - no matter what employment bracket that a Blub might be in.
By maintaining a multitde of high-end jobs which produce quality goods to be shipped to crude neighbors, the Blubs have developed a very wealthy nation. A brisk trade of raw mainland goods such as wood and stone are brought in on ships and barges, while finished goods are shipped out the same way. Blub artwork is some of the finest in the world, and many noblemen of foreign culture will order Blub artistry.
The Land
The Big Island, as it is known was formed by an undersea volcano millions of years ago. Since then it has eroded down to a hilly landmass sitting atop massive deposits of ores and minerals. The center of Big Island raises up to a peak of about 2,900 feet and resembles an upright bowl, where the long-dead volcano once existed.
Some volcanic activity still exists at the far northern finger of land that sticks out from Big Island, but it has been reduced to just patchy hotspots of lava beneath the crust of the world, which fuels several areas of hotsprings which has become a popular attraction for vacations.
To the west is Little Island, which has white sand beaches and a lush forest of old growth trees.
Technology and Military
The Blubs are a race of small stature and are generally weaker in physical strength than the enemies they face in the world. A Blub would be in serious trouble against a troll in hand-to-hand combat.
So early on in the existance of the Blubs, they developed the use of magic. It was originally used crudely to fend off attacks by denizens of Big Island. But over time it was crafted into an artform. Blub wizards could not only smite the enemy with a fireball, but bend the flames to the perfect shape to avoid scorching the grass beneath the enemy's feet.
Even still, not every Blub could afford to learn magic to defend themselves. Thus came the era of magical weaponry and magically augmented weaponry. No longer was a crossbow bolt simply a piece of wood, but once imbued would explode on impact, or freeze its target.
The wealth of the people helped to fuel the equipping of the military and the Blubs soon fielded a small but highly efficient army. Armed with such weapons, the Blubs overan their enemies on Big Island and claimed it entirely as their own.
With no other threats left except from the outside, the ways of magic began to slip away as fewer and fewer bothered to learn it. Finally realizing the danger of the situation, the Blub Council formed a special branch of the military called MagiWerks.
MagiWerks became singlehandedly responsible for supplying the military with augmented equipment and developing new and more powerful equipment for the Blubs to field.
Ground
The primary ground force of the Blubs are their infantry. Equipped with a range of weapons from spears and axes to swords and shields, the Blub infantry provide mostly a policing role in cities and a light infantry role on the battlefield. The Blubs maintain a battlefield batallion of archers as well as a batallion of engineers.
Line Infantry: 4,500
Swordsmen Infantry: 3,500
Archers: 500
Engineers: 500
Sea
Being entirely surrounded by water could mean attack from any direction. It also means needing to fend off pirates and rogue ships which might interfere with trading. The Blubs, loving the water, have always maintained a strong naval force. They feel it is better to stop an invader at sea than to risk being attacked at home.
Marines: 7,500
Naval Merchantmen: 20
Patrol Frigates: 36
Galleons: 14
Man-o-War: 10
Special Information/Reference Resource
Augmented Weaponry - Augmented weaponry is fueled by specially imbued power crystals. The crystals can be summoned by powerful wizards, but more commonly they are just common quartz which are then fueled by magical power generators. The crystals, depending on type and size (Some are small, for augmenting crossbows and bows, some are bigger for heavy weaponry) tend to have differing lifespans.
The effect of an augmented weapon is to extend the range of the shot and to add a magical effect upon impact, usually an explosive, firey or freezing shot.
Small power crystal: Typically inserted into special compartments on weapons, these are good for a fifty shots.
Medium power crystal: Typically used in ballistas, catapults and other heavy weapons a medium power crystal can augment about 25 shots.
Naval Merchantmen - These are medium sized ships that are typically manned by civilian tradesmen. Those owned by the navy maintain their general purpose but have been equipped with pairs of rapid-fire augmented ballistas.
Crew: 30
Arms: x2 Ballistas
Patrol Frigate - These ships are approximately 40 feet long and are equipped with double masts for speed. They have no armor, but their speed and manuverability make up for it.
Crew: 25
Arms: x4 Ballistas
Galleon - The galleon is a medium sized ship approximately 70 feet long and equipped with light armoring such as toughened leather and copper plating. It is designed for interdicting invading ships and has a good mix of speed and firepower.
Crew: 100
Marines: 70
Arms: x6 Ballistas
x3 Catapults
Man-o-War - The Man-o-War is a heavy warship with medium armoring. It's somewhat slow, but its firepower is enough to devestate enemy ships at long range. Its purpose is to engage enemy ships on the open sea.
Crew: 150
Marines: 180
Arms: x16 Ballistas
x4 Catapults
