Incognitia: The Rough Guide
Incognitia is a politically stable, economically and technologically advanced, confident nation.
From a population base of over 4 billion souls has been built one of the most heavily developed solar systems in the galaxy; there are four space elevators round the equator of Incognitia, the main inhabited planet, permitting access for the three billion on the planetary surface to the two other inhabited planets and four inhabited moons, as well as the innumerable habitats and asteroid bases.
A certain amount of resource gathering is conducted in barren nearby systems; however most resources are obtained locally, either from fresh mining or highly efficient recycling operations. The main demand for new resources comes, in fact, from the military.
This military is naturally focussed around the fleet. Now approaching the largest it can reach without placing undue strain on the economy, it consists of around 500 large capital ships, all of a very high build quality, equipped with the best that Incognitia can provide, and crewed by professional volunteers.
This is supplemented by the myriad fighters launched from carriers, now at last equipped with effective anti-ship weapons; the smaller independent vessels, viz destroyers and frigates; and substantial defences operated in the Incognitian system – after all the fleet isn’t always at home.
The Fleet is divided into stations of varying size: Oort Station, comprising all fixed defences within the Oort Cloud; Ground Station, comprising the Marines and any other forces designed for operation dirt-side; then the main fleet stations, of which there are five, of roughly equal size:
Nescia Station
Dunkennen Station
Nesais Station
Derno Station
Incos Station.
While named for major Incognitian cities, they represent the largest usual deployment of the Fleet. Sending forces from two Stations is highly unusual, and each has a slightly different institutional culture. Nescia is traditionally the pride of the Fleet, and conducts most high-profile and diplomatic operations.
There is always some grumbling about the size and cost of the fleet; however many critics have been silenced by the fleet’s successes – most admittedly involving more the threat of action than actual combat – in representing Incognitia’s interests and winning new friends abroad. With the recent joining of the League of Free Worlds and signature of the Dominion Accords, it appears the Fleet will continue to be active.
What most visitors to Incognitia notice first, of course, is that everywhere there are chimpanzees, wearing clothes, and dolphins in bizarre spidery ‘walkers’. Many a social faux-pas has stemmed from ignorance about their status. Neo-fins and neo-pans are full citizens in Incognitia, and have intelligence roughly on a par with a human’s. They are the result of a vast effort, before Incognitia reached for the stars, to no longer be alone. Pans are mostly to be found working ground-side, and are rarely found in the Fleet, except in the Marines. Fins, on the other hand, now pilot most fighter craft in the Fleet, and are steadily rising through the ranks. A few are even now being picked out as potential Lords of the Admiralty in future years.
