The Alliance had survived for a few months now, since its formation by the hands of a group of adventurers. Today, they would make themselves known to the Valgardian scum.
Londaz put a hand above her eyes as she squinted down the road, looking for the patrol they were lying in wait for. Three humanoid forms appeared, silhoutted against the sun.
"<Get down. The humans will be here soon.>" she barked at her subordinates, in the distinctive yapping accent of draconic that Kobolds were noted for.
The Kobolds ducked behind the shrubs and crouched, crossbows cocked and ready to fire when the patrol came into view. As they neared the middle of the ambush, Londaz took a tiny archery target from her pocket and muttered under her breath, making motions with her hand. "Austrat, Svent, Irlim" she incanted, the bolt on her crossbow glowing slightly.

The Valgardian Rangers followed their scout who brought them along an upper ridge of a small stream valley where they were plotting the course of the stream and the formation of the valley so as to properly map all of its course.
As they came closer to the valley bottom they strung their bows knowing that there had been more attacks in this area by the enemies. With that they took a breather near the stream and took turns standing guard while the others ate and drank.

(OOC: The sorceror (Londaz)'s bolt is more accurate and likely to pierce because of the magical assistance intoned just before the combat. For reference, it's infulenced by the True Strike (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/trueStrike.htm) spell.
Also for reference, here is the Burning Hands (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/burningHands.htm) spell.)
"<Fire!>" came the hissed cry.
Nine small bolts were loosed from the bushes around the Valgardians, zipping with deadly accuracy at the intruders upon their lands.
Londaz let her crossbow fall loose in her hand and stood, holding a claw towards the Valgardians.
"<You will pay for what your people have done!>" she yelled, though her kobold yipping accent made her sound rather much like an angry chihuahua to the Valgardians.
"Ixen, Gix, Valignat!" she intoned, gouts of flame erupting from her palm and enveloping the patrol. The searing flames washed over the rangers and scout, before vanishing in an instant. Kobold Warriors charged towards the Rangers, brandishing shortspears.
(OOC: Recap; Actions in order were: 1. 9 Crossbow bolts fired at Valgardians. 2. Sorceror stands and casts 'Burning Hands' at the Valgardians. 3. Warriors charge. This all happens in a span of about 12 seconds.)

The scout was killed in the first moments in the attacks as he had been the ones most in view as he had been the one standing guard. The two Valgardians took cover, as soon as they heard the word fire, and returned fire with their longbows at the charging enemies. Then after firing two arrows each they draw their long swords and charged.
One of the Valgardians yelled,” For Valgard, kill these abominations and send these barbaric scum to oblivion!”

(OOC: Remember that words in the html tags <> are in draconic and aren't normally understandable without a trained interpreter.)
Londaz heard a wet thud as two arrow embedded themselves in her gut. Looking down at the shafts protruding from her midsection, she felt everything fading to black.
"<I'm sorry... I just wasn't strong enough...>"
---
Jaurrir charged with the others, grasping his spear tightly and gritted his teeth. Now would be the moment where all the lost of his tribe would have their spirits avenged.
For Veiknip... For Teihlyd... and for all the others...
"<DIE!>" screamed the kobold, as his spear met the blades of the Valgardian rangers. Bolts whizzed into the melee as the archers fired their crossbows again as opportunities arose.

A Valgardian was stroke in the leg by one of the bolts, but kept fighting on as was his training and his oath to fear no pain or death in the service of the Empire.
The other Valgardian fought with great vigor as was in the Rangers as they were of the elite fighting force of the Empire and were very powerful melee fighters.
Continuing on did they fight and till death would they go if needed.

"<Meorlog! Help me get this one down!>"
The kobold behind the wounded Valgardian aimed a sharp blow at the man's achilles tendon, driving the spear down with force while Jaurrir shoved at his thighs.

The Valgardins knowing that he would die soon decided to take these bastards with him so he drew his dagger and threw it at Jaurrir’s heart and then moved his sword to kill the other one coming at him from behind with a swipe of his sword.
As well, the other Valgardian was faring well against these weak creatures as he was using his sword to parry his attacks while he parried there attacks and stoke at their open spots.

The dagger landed wetly in Jaurrir's chest, narrowly missing his heart. It was enough though, blood rapidly filling his lungs.
"<I'll see you soon, Teihlyd...>"
Even as everything blurred away, the dying kobold lifted his spear and rammed it with all his might into the Valgardian's stomach.
---
Meorlog ducked the sword blow, his small size and natural dexterity working in his advantage. He quickly jumped to the side of the now divided Valgardian and also aimed a lethal blow into the man's midsection.
The archers had dropped their crossbows and had drawn their shortswords, and were running into melee as well.
Heespir and M'hrep were not doing quite so well against the other Valgardian, and were locked in alternating combat. Seeing the charging archers, M'hrep motioned to Heespir to distract the Valgardian. After all, the larger creature could only focus on one of them at a time and spinning his sword around was only so accurate.
Heespir ducked and thrust her spear at the Ranger's wrist, while M'hrep, who was behind the Ranger, stabbed him in the base of the spine.

OOC: Okay here is a little god mod, he is spine is broken apart I know, but he dies.
IC: The Valgardin refused to die by the hands of these vile creatures and lifting his sword he stabbed himself threw the heart and died a second afterward.
The other Valgardian seeing his comrade die slashed his sword and hit one of the goblins and then gaining enough room around him sounded the horn so as to gain the attention of a nearby unit of Rangers hunting goblins.
After that he yelled," For Valgard!!!"
He with his sword slashed another goblin and charged at the one had caused his friend to commit sucide.

(OOC: Not goblins. This is a kobold. (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/kobold.htm) That's my only objection.)
The kobolds knew the horn being sounded was a bad sign. This meant that they would be calling in reinforcements, and would need to make a withdrawl. Meorlog quickly scrambled to his feet and ran with the others.
As they ran, M'hrep turned back and hurled his shortspear at the horn-blowing Valgardian, while others gathered their dropped weaponry.
If the ranger followed them, he would see the little reptilians dissappear into a tunnel about waist height.

The Valgardian was scratched on his arm by the spear, but overall wound was not bad at all there was no open wound due to his leather arm.
Within five minutes a company of Rangers came and secured a perimeter. They then cut down a few nearby trees which they used to make a pyre to cremate their died so as not to allow the monsters to desecrate the dead.
So after twenty minutes the fires had consumed the bodies and were dying down and so the Rangers disappeared back into the landscape and returned to one of the Valgardian forts in the area.

(OOC: Oddly enough, the practice of cremation is very common among kobolds.)
A few hours later, the kobolds returned to retrieve their dead and similarly cremated them, though in their own lair.
It was clear that the kobolds had the capacity to match the Valgardians, though much of their power was based upon preparation. It had taken only five minutes for the other rangers to arrive, and any battle would need to be wrapped up before that. Unless the roads became unsafe, of course.
A plan was already beginning to take shape in Vardel's devious little mind.
