Much of the space of the small, flat, mostly barren island was devoted to what now stood as a sprawling and new base. Several miles worth of runways, large ports, fabrication facilities, and a major telecoms hub, all built on an island that was half the size before dredgers dug up and fortified mor soil to stand on the edges all around the island.

On maps, the island was still microscopic compared to the speck that denoted it's location on the map.

Still, it was one of many projects that had been pushed forth by the Prime, the government, the people, and the corporations of Gauthic.

Several sattelites orbiting over the island had been rented, many ships and aircraft circled the island, and every single bit of available personell all watched as this event of Gauthic's history was being prepped.

It looked like a flying saucer with a needle sticking out of it's bottom. The first of what hoped to be many re-usable, small, multi-ton payload launch vehicles. It was spinning at several thousand RPMs, the external, ground based motors priming it. The spin would take in and compress air to be blown through the ignitor ring on the edges.

Comptroller gave the final countdown, it was go time, "Four, three, two, one, Ignition." The red button was pressed, barely a click sounded in the command room as everyone watched the vehicle on the screens.

Underneathe the launch vehicle the needle lit up for less then a second when the blue crystal laser washed over it's surface. The heat caused it to change shape and smooth out, the expensive custom steel alloy directing the laser along the flat bottom of the craft and out to the edg of the ring to meet and ignite the very air itself. Fire, a white amber color flared out from the edges of the saucer, forcing the vehicle up several feet to push with all it's might against the external motors and clamps that held it in place. The comprtoller then stated the next phase of launch as he intitiated it, "Dis-engaging external motors, releasing clamps." The vehicle was spinning fast under it's own power, and the clamps that held it on either side were pneumatically launch at several meters a second to be well clear of the vehicle as it shot up from it's bunker.

Rising at incredible speeds, the vehicle appeared as nothing more then a flickering light tearing into the sky. Rising out of the atmosphere. It couldn't rise on oxygen alone as it got thinner, and began releasing it's own supply of liquid oxygen into the mix of air to maintain thrust. This continued until the distance was becoming too great for the laser to maintain stength, and liquid hydrogen was introduced to maintain ignition. Fifty kilometers, halfway to space and the saucer was only just now using onboard fuel. It wouldn't be long before the craft's internal altimeter could no longer read, and relied upon ground telemetry to report it's altitude.

Emergence from atmosphere. Low Orbit. Release payload and drop. The top of the saucer open and flung out the tiny sattelite, which proceeded to unfold it's insturments and engage thrusters to put it into proper orbit. The launch vehicle, a shelled out saucer, was now making slow decent into the atmosphere. Eventually it would glide, travelling close to 60 kilometers per hour, engage parachutes and aim straight for it's island, point of origin.

Comptroller, "The time now is 1152 hours... Month 5, day 14, 2007 Anno Domini... we did it!" Anthony Malcolm, Prime of Gauthic had been holding the bottle of champagne, and had the honor of uncorking it as the crews all across the island went absolutely wild.

Gauthic had a spacecraft in orbit.

Gauthic Telecom Sattelite 001 was currently travelling close to Mach 21 as it raced over the european continent, taking pictures, delivering data, running routine transmissions for people such as hikers in the mountains of Norway and Sweden. Someone in Germany sent an e-mail through it's antennae. It was yet one more public sattelite among a small fleet that made earth's global communication network run smoothly.

Far below, it could see clouds and weather, and pretty soon several weather stations would be requesting data specifically from this sattelite, wanting a clear picture of the cloud movement.

The weather was turning worse. Dark clouds were on the horizon. Construction on the new launch launch bunkers would have to be postponed, but there was one active and operation launcher.

In the new christened Launch Holder 1, the first active launch vehicle was being reset, the mirrored laser deflector being machine smoothed and cooled to it's pre-launch shape. A launch would be impossible tomorrow, not with the raging equatorial storm coming in, but the launch saucer was going to be ready for the next available opportunity.

Within the fabrication centers, the new launch vehicles were being assembled. Several at final assembly, a few just having undergoing primary assembly. Five would be complete by next week.

In the comptroller base, the euphoria of yesterday's launch had worn off and it was crunch time. They had a working re-usable laser launch system. And now they had to use it, often. Administrators and Moderators from the Bureaus of Communications, Aeronautics, Internal Affairs, External Affairs, Military Doctrines, and half a dozen other paper pushing government offices were discussing and arguing every detail of the future of this program now that it had been proven feasible. Now that it was officially going to be a space hub, not an airport or military dock. Prime, Anthony Malcolm, was elsewhere, secure in the idea or at least fully expecting that by tomorrow the Bureaus would have an efficient solution.

"Mister Malcolm, the Sattelite of ours is doing fine. And testing of our current weapons platform is complete as well. Take a look." Said Commandant Zappata. Anthony Malcolm was reclining in a large office chair, and was idly looking at the very large map of the world until the Commandant had finished his sentence. He gave a glance, smile, and salute to Zappata before lethargically standing up, stretching lazily, and walking over to where the weapons platform sat on the large table.

It was an incredible sight, simple black rectangle laying on it's side. It was coverd on both of it's widest sides with about 50 round lids, making them 100 total, concealing the high explosive anti-tank rounds. It had a very simple thruster system, and a secure, passive communications system. 2 meters long, 1.8 meters tall, .3 meters wide, it only took two men to carry what could very well be the deadliest piece of space based artillery in the history of man.

Anthony Malcolm made a very slow march around the machine, a hand on his orange goteed chin. The product of his and several engineer's work was now real, seated before him. He had a great respect for the people that made it possible, in taking simple modern technology and applying it to this. He spoke slowly, pointing to the Commandant as he stared at the single "eye" on the front end of the silent machine, "I want this machine in orbit as soon as possible. And I want 5 replacements, with one ready to launch and replace the other at all times." The Commandant saluted, and gave a nod, "It can be done by the end of the month. We will have the most solid orbital defense... capable of striking anything in orbit, or any heavy armored vehicle like a SCUD, anywhere in the world... we did it."

Anthony drew in a slow breath, turning to the Commandant as he spoke in a low, grave tone, "Pray, pray that no one ever has to know this is in space. Pray that it never has to be used... our entire country's short history has been a preperation for war, a war I do not wish to see in my lifetime. Pray."
