OOC Planning Thread: "Claim, Prove and Conquer"

The thread itself is not going to come for a few weeks, but there is a lot in my system regarding this particular thread and what is going to happen in it. Thus, I am making this thread as a sort of guide thread, planning thread, and sign-up thread all mixed together up in one. I am going to warn anyone who has read the first paragraph so far and is vaguely interested - this is going to be a difficult thread for someone I don't know to get into. It will be a difficult thread for someone who does not either a) have a vested interest in one or more of the characters in the thread or b) is an intimate in Yaforite politics. It is possible, but it will be difficult.

So much for exceedingly pompous disclaimers. Anyway, the forthcoming thread, "Claim, Prove and Conquer" will be a continuation, of sorts, of a thread from over one year ago of mine, The End of an Epoch; The Beginning of an Era. (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=452650) Much of that thread is badly written, the quote at the beginning has little or no relation to the plot, and, while I like it, it is not totally exemplary of my writing. It does, however, the preclude the coming thread "Claim, Prove and Conquer" and I would recommend anyone who is interested in participating in the forthcoming thread to read it. Don't judge me from it, though.

However, in that thread, there was some interesting character development in that thread, as well as some important stuff regarding the history of Yafor 2. It is rather key in that way, and I felt bad about leaving it how it was, very half-finished and not nearly where I had wanted it (come to think of, I never really had a plot line for that thread. That's probably why it failed). As a result that with the plot lines I already had in motion, I found an easy way to fit in the people from "The End of an Epoch; The Beginning of an Era" and I'm taking that route. From that comes the forthcoming thread.

There are many important characters in the puzzle, including many new ones from the previous RP, and I've taken the time to list them and talk about them a bit:

High Korut Eklaz I: Eklaz is the High Korut of the Jakallan Faith, the most important theological position in the entire nation. He has absolute authority over everything that any Jakallan does or says. As the representative of the Twin Gods (Enalla and Ravantur) on Earth, Eklaz is also a judge of humans on Earth. But Eklaz is simply a man, a man with extensive political ambition and the weight of the position upon his shoulders. Eklaz, with the empire, and thus the governmental importance of his position, gone needs a counter-weight to the Grand Democratic Duchy. He has issued a "Claimiancy", for any who can emperor to take the position to do so..

Tyranus Yaforian: Tyranus Yaforian is the younger son of Emperor Emmanuel XVI, the last Yaforite emperor, and the last of the Yaforian dynasty. On his deathbed, in the public view, the old empire disowned Tyranus' older brother, Garainan, and made Tyranus his heir. Upon the fall of the empire, Tyranus and his son, with a trusted adviser, were exiled to a small island. Tyranus is cursed in that he does not wish to rule; that he has the imperial crown upon and his forehead, but does not wish to bear the burden. He tries to escape that, and balance the mad ambitions of his son, with every step, and with every step fails. He has escaped and has fled to his older brother, wishing not to become emperor.

Azadrazan Yaforian: The older son of Tyranus Yaforian, Azadrazan was exiled with his father to a small island far away. Azadrazan believes his father is a coward and himself wishes to take the throne of the Empire on his own. Azadrazan has also escaped off of the island and is using his charm and vision to cultivate support among those who were a part of the Empire, but are not a part of the Grand Democratic Duchy. In some ways, letting Azadrazan go free was the worst mistake that the Grand Democratic Duchy could have made. But they made it.

Guillermo Vicente (Garainan Yaforian): The older son of dead Emperor Emmanuel XVI, Garainan realized late in the war for independence that his Empire was going to lose. A prominent Democrat, he immediately switched sides, and upon his father's death, began to call for a Democratic government as soon as he could. When the Grand Democratic Duchy won, he became the Chief Minister in their new government, and is known internationally for his canny political sense and ability. He has gone all over the world (as well as being the only Yaforite man to ever go to Automagfreek) and is a proud to be a part of the democratic government, harboring no more ambitions of rule.

Zadarain Yaforian: Tyranus' younger son, Zadarain is much like his brother Azadrazan in the sheer depth of his ambition. Abandoned to die during a flight during the War for Independence, he escaped with the help of trusted servant and has lived internationally ever since. Currently in Pantera, Zadarain is tough, intelligent, and cold. With an army of Panteran mercenaries and the blessing of the Lord Reaver, he is heading off with an army to claim what he believes is his right - the throne and an Empire, and to punish those who abandoned him.

Kazedrankhor Jadioran: An adviser of Tyranus', Kazedrankhor is old, trusted, and smart. Knowing of what Eklaz has said, he is using an Imperial Cousin as a puppet to further his own aims and to establish a new imperial court to his liking. An enemy of Garainan's at court, he knows what he is doing and is proud to do so. With an army of provincials and his military sense, he may be a threat to take the throne to his own.

Davamorad Kordala: The son of merchant, but the descendant of kings from the Late Agrevan Dynasty, and he just wants the throne for his own...

Dana'aran Ki'sta: A Kotareb chieftain - one of the wild men of Yafor 2.

There is much more, but I don't have time to post it now. I'll do it later.

The RP Begins...

The RP begins with Eklaz, High Korut of the Jakallan Church, making a startling announcement. High above the great temple in Juhamda, he stands, looking down upon centuries of hatred, of Jakallan religious turmoil. He then announces, gazing at the crowds of Jakallans who flock to his banner, who look up at him as if he is a god, that something new is going to happen. He is announcing a "Claimiancy", an archaic practice of the High Korut's. The last Claimiancy was at the end of the Late Agrevan Dynasty, thousands of years ago. This will be the Third Claimiancy.

A Claimiancy is a process that, the past two times in the past, was used when there was an excess of princes who were eligible to claim the throne and it was the end of a dynasty. This time it is utterly different. There is no dynasty to take the throne from. Instead, this Claimiancy is being made so that there will be a new dynasty ruling, so that there will be an emperor after long last. This will not be an emperor to supplant the Grand Democratic Duchy or to rule in the place of the Grand Democratic Duchy. Or at least, if that is a side effect, it is not the fault of the High Korut.

The actual process of a Claimiancy is rather straightforward. There are two things "necessary" to succeed: proof that you are who you are, and an army. The first is more difficult than it might seem. To get proof, one often has to go back, get confessions, video, signed, and in the prescence of Jakallan officials from people who recall the time. One must go back through the folded pages of history, retrace the family tree, and prove who you are. It is a rather arduous process. The second task, an army, is easier.

Then, the Jakallans watch every bash each other enough and whoever wins in the end is declared victor and begins the new dynasty - either with the same name as the last one or a new name. This time, it is far more likely that a new dynasty name will be found. The Yaforite dynasty is over, dead, and gone. This is Grand Democratic Duchy's period. The next dynasty will be one of rebirth, freedom, and, well, everything un-dynastic. Hopefully.

The Politics Behind The Move

Now, if you've managed to read all the way through that and not die of boredom or some such ailment, then I congratulate. But chances are that you have a question or two (or three or four or even more!). The most prominent one is probably something along these lines; why would the righteous power in the region, the government, the Grand Democratic Duchy of Yafor 2 and its leader, Elected Duke Rudiv Sodo allow a "Claimiancy" anyway? Why would they allow an empire anyway? They have an army, international superiority, etc.

The reason is the politics behind the decision. The Grand Democratic Duchy cannot openly challenge the High Korut. If they so, the common people, the rural Jakallans, would most likely rise up against them and in a land like Yafor 2, where they have enormous power, they could easily depose the government and get an empire anyway. The High Korut thus wields power aplenty. However, he too is limited in that he cannot challenge the Grand Democratic Duchy either - they have all the tanks after all.

During the Empire, the High Korut had power over the emperor as well. However, in secular democratic Yafor 2, they do not. Thus, the High Korut has come up with idea of a new empire, and thus a bargaining chip. The Grand Democratic Duchy will try to get a friendly emperor on the throne and then convert the government to a constitutional monarchy with an emperor with no power, thereby turning the High Korut's plan on his head.

Yes, very complicated, and there's more. I just can't post it now.

EDIT: I forgot one very important thing. Most Yaforites have split loyalties - one to government and one to religion (in that order). The emperor would provide a bridge between those loyalties and give many ordinary Yaforites someone who fulfills both roles.

Apologies for the late response. I have another one, dealing exclusively with Zadarain and Azadrazan, in the works.

Another post up. It's in an odd style and very oddly written - I apologize, I'm rather sick at the moment.
