Recent History

Prior to World War 1, the Federation was a European colony, much like the rest of Africa. Yet an independence movement had been growing for many years, and with the world engulfed in war and the Europeans distracted, they seized their chance. The rebellion was successful and the three former colonies united to form the West African Federation.

A Federal Republic was established with a constitution ensuring the people basic rights, including the right to vote. Many economic reforms were also enacted to help modernize and industrialize the country and great progress has been made since independence.

Yet despite all this, the West African Federation is still based mainly on agriculture and trade. The military has remained small focusing on quality rather than quantity. The recent discovery of oil leads some to hope that revenues from this and assistance from other countries will help the Federation industrialize and modernize its society.

Heavy industry has begun to grow in some of the major cities, yet the Federation is definitely still on its way to full industrialization.
