The control room was quiet; it was full of scientists, generals, and the president. The room was 461 feet below the surface, the twelfth of 17 stories deep beneath the surface of the fabled Andorian Mountain Range, home to some of the most inhospitable and violent terrains on the planet. 2,000 miles from the nearest city the research base, codenamed Soto-72 was the most secret and well guarded installation in the country and its existence was known only to those who worked there and certain individuals of great power and importance. Red siren lights started flashing down below the control room in the testing compartment. 1.5 feet of reinforced plexiglass separated the men from the testing compartment which was 56ft wide, 321 feet long, and 61 feet high. Down below the safe confines of the control room was the product of years of painstaking research and refinement. Connected to several large capacitors, each one the size of a VW Beetle, lay a 155mm rail gun aimed at 10 walls of steel each 3 feet thick.
control, weapon is primed for firing, all systems are green.

Roger that control, firing in 3...2...1...

At once a metallic flash 20 feet long erupted out of the rail gun and its copper projectile vaporized a 10 foot cross section of the first wall and buried itself in a 2 foot deep crater in the second wall. A few seconds after the first shot the cannon threw out flame once more and again and again. In under a minute the weapon had turned each of the 10 walls of solid steel into scrap. The men in the room burst into celebration; their years of labor had finally paid off.

By Allah we've done it! said one physicist.

looking at one intensely surprised and interested general another scientist said to him, you see how much damage can be done with soft copper rounds. Now imagine what could be done with military grade tungsten coted DU

The purpose of the test was not to determine the power of the rail gun but to see if the new materials used in constructing the rails would allow for continuous repeated use without failure. The next step was to test the weapon at the Uellaenas Proving Grounds father west of the site but for now this was enough. The president nodded his head and gave a small smile.

"It's a fine piece of work men. Good Job"

the scientists and staff in the room nodded their heads and thanked the president.

The weapon would be combat ready in about a month at the earliest and production would take a little longer. The nation wasn't in any great hurry but it was eager to outfit naval vessels with this new technology and its potential uses as shore defenses among other things. Seeing all there was to see and making their decision the president and his generals moved towards the exist o f the room. There were other tests to be observed as well in the complex before the president had to return to Farbanti.

ooc: this is all secret ic and took place about a year ago from todays current events. More of a background reference for where I got rail guns from.
