Operation Retribution: Burnsian Invasion of Velkya

The Burnsian Desert
06-01-2007, 21:08
RBS Hellfire Enduring
Duojin-Class Superdreadnaught
Outside Velkyan Territorial Waters

The Hellfire Enduring's missile batteries swung skyward. Targeting information from the ship's scanners was fed into them, relating the position of every civilian and military sattelite above Velkya. Burnsian ASAT missiles fired from 200 different ships, sending a volley of 6,000 missiles screaming into the upper atmosphere.

At the bridge, an ensign reported the launch to the captain. He, in turn, made the call to steam forward towards the Velkyan shoreline. The Regal-Class Submersible Carriers surfaced, loosing just under 24,000 fighter-bombers to protect the massive fleet from aerial attack. While they were surfaced, they targeted coastal defenses along a 750-mile stretch of coastline. SSMs exploded from the VLS tubes, arcing up and then sweeping back down to the water's surface, flying only 35 feet above the waves. In all, 15,000 SSMs were launched by the submarines. The Phalanx guns, SSM emplacments, and SAM emplacements on all the ships were kept constantly on the alert for enemy warships.

Burnsian Army units prepared belowdecks of the Superdreadnaughts and troop carriers. Select Helljumper units would be dropped from the upper atmosphere via supersonic B1 bombers, in special two-man pods. These units would go behind enemy lines to destroy key military communications bases, factories, and supply centers. They would also target supermarkets, schools, and national landmarks.

As a precaution, two more fleets were deployed from Regal Naval Base, carrying each one National Army of 1,000,000 men. These would arrive after the landings had begun to ensure reinforcements for troops on the ground.

Finally, the 10th Fleet, "Evervengeance", set sail. The ships in this fleet were outfitted with several different kinds of chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons; these included bombs carrying billions of mosquitoes that had contracted fatal strains of several diseases. The nuclear equivalent of a gigaton of TNT was deployed with this fleet.

(OOC: Right. And how did you manage to jump from setting sail to getting within range of my coastline [and satellite network] with a eight thousand ship fleet, while the combined navies of the Fyre Sea Pact of northeast Haven are making constant patrols?)

OOC-Big Mistake. Simply trying to sail to Velkya alone would result in the instant death of your fleet.

http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/6317/havenmapup0.png

First of all, the nations in Yellow represent members of the Fyre Sea pact, which is a mutual defense force that keeps the sea lanes clear of enemy forces. Included in such is a 10,000 strong force operated by Questers, and all an all you would have to fight through nearly 25,000 ships from from 11 nations current sitting in and around the Fyre Sea with the role of protecting the area of hostile warships.

Another interesting feature of the pact is a massive floating fortress/naval base just north of Velkya. This is operated by the members of the alliance, and features a battery of 72 inch nuclear pulse guns (Basically propels the projectile a massive distance compared to a normal propulsion system) which can hit targets up to 20,000 kilometers away. So before you even were within the region 72 inch shells would be falling on your fleet, which would sink handfuls of ships at a time.

Now, the nations in Orange represent allies of Velkya and other Fyre Sea pact nations. These nations it massed force totals over one hundred thousand naval strike aircraft, thousands of additional ships, and a handy declaration of war upon you the moment you launch anything at Velkya.

So, in essence, which ever way you attempt to reach him, either via Omz Strait or through the eastern Fyre sea, you are pretty much guaranteed to die at the hands of a force over ten times as large as both your invasion fleet and air forces. Don't believe me ? Just go ahead and try to do so.

OOC: No need to get annoyed. I didn't know they were there. Mind telling me of anything else that might impede my attack?

And yes, I used magic. I now cast a 50-pt Fire Spell on Target using my level 22 Mage on Tocrowkia. :P

EDIT: Uh, huh. That's where all they guys from TNC went. Interesting. Well, give me a bit to edit my post.

EDIT Again: What would I be facing if I went between Barkozy and Aralonia?

OOC: Yeah, I'm just trying to make this work here. I've never heard of 20,000 kilometer range guns before; that's why I didn't think of them. Now, what about the strait between Aralonia and Barkozy...?

Well, you'd be facing the Aralonian Navy and my Aralonia Station, but they won't offer much in the way of solid resistance, but if you enter that way, you will still have to deal with the allied fleets which will eventually catch up with you. Perhaps you could come on our IRC channel or on MSN to discuss this?

OCC: Hate to interupt, but how is a 72 inch nuclear pulse gun possible in MT? Is it just a massive gun that uses nuclear power to propel the shell? It would be a 1800mm gun, which would be feasible. But a 22,000 range seems a bit out of the range of MT. (unless this is PMT?)

OOC: Really? That's weird, considering you sold me that particle cannon thingy, which I'm pretty sure is PMT...

We're shipping it in three C-130's. Once you give us the final payment, we'll ship the third. It's powered by a large bank of nuclear batteries, and reflects off of a sattelite in the upper atmosphere. The beam is about six feet in diameter, and apart from the heat shimmer, is completely invisible. Upon contact with matter, it destroys the bonds that hold the atoms together, and effectively melts it. We haven't tried it on organic life yet, but we believe that it will evaporate all the water from the being and melt the flesh. Very effective against all types of infantry and tanks, and especially warships. The only real weak link is the sattelite, which can be shot down.

OOC: Just thought I'd pop in to say this: Submarine carriers have existed in real life. Japan built a couple during WWII. They were the largest submarines ever made and only held 6 planes. They were designed to carry planes a long way undetected so they could bomb the west coast of the United States, mostly to demoralize the American people. Needless to say, they didn't work all too well and were promptly sunk. I don't use them. They seem impractical.
Carbandia

ooc: ^mostly true, but in accurate on two accounts.
1. They were the largest diesel subs ever made (several SSBN's are larger, irl)
2. And they only carried 3 aircraft, each.

Doesn't make the comment about their practicality (or rather lack there of) any less true, tho.

OOC: I do manufacture a submarine carrier, only for my 'impractical' storefront. It carries 3 Rocket-powered float plane interceptors. It is only good for a quick bomb and run of enemy shorelines or perhaps an ambush of a small enemy port. It is no good otherwise.

Although Barkozy is not officially involved in any conflict against the EVIL alliance, incursions into Barkozian territorial waters will result in retaliatory action. The use of WMDs that would result in fallout entering Barkozian territory will provoke a response in kind.

RBS Hellfire Enduring, Flagship of Operation Retribution
8,000 km from Aralonian-Barkozyan Strait, Aralonian-Mackinay/Margia Strait

High General Ji-Lou Khan stared out of the window of the bridge, a forlorn look in his eyes. It didn't take a genius to realize it. He was going to die today, along with over five million other Burnsian men. The plan was a deathtrap. Even if the fleets did manage to penetrate the Omz Strait, they would have been so decimated by shore fire from Aralonia, Midlonia, Whyatica and Velkya that the landing force would be token at best. However, despite these insurmountable odds, Khan had a mission to preform.

He gazed at the 8,000 ship fleet that lay before him, seemingly unmoving. Khan knew, however, that their propellers were steaming them at an even 30 knots. He thought to himself, What force of man compels me to stay the course? Why do I walk so knowledgably into suicide?

Unfortunately, he couldn't come up to an answer.

He turned to a Petty Officer. "Tell the second half of the fleet to make a 12-degree adjustment. We will stay on this bearing."

The ensign nodded. A small notice came up on his command screen: they were now in range of Haven's guns.

The Royal Palace Press Room
Highfather
The Burnsian Desert

The Queen strode up to the table and took a seat. Opposite her was a reporter from the Burnsian News Network. They shook hands. The light from the cameras glinted off the polished surface of the mohogany conference table. The crystal chandalier above them shone, reflecting the scene a million times through their intricacies. The man shuffled his notes a bit in front of him, and then pointed for the camera to begin taping. He spoke.

"Your Highness, it has been reported that millions upon millions of Burnsian fighting men have been deployed to the Haven region for an offensive on the nation of Velkya. What is the reason for this attack?"

The Queen looked at him pointedly. "The reason the Desert has attack Velkya is for their unfounded assault on the EVIL Bloc Headquarters. There was no reason for them to involve themselves; in fact, the EVIL Bloc has done almost nothing on the international level at all."

"Well," replied the reporter, "why is the Desert in an alliance whose acronym is EVIL? Isn't that a bit... well... evil-sounding? The Desert has always been benevolent towards other nations; why are we in this alliance in the first place?"

The Queen tilted her chin up ever so much, a cue to the man that her authority was not to be questioned. "Because," she said, "it is important for us to maintain our presence as a world power. This either means that we give in to everyone else's wishes, or we establish that we are not to be screwed with. I, personally, don't like kissing ass. It's not one of my hobbies. I prefer killing people."

The reporter seemed startled. "But, surely, you must think of your own men... the defenses in Haven are nearly insurmountable without a massive fleet, even larger than the Desert has..." Unbeknownst to him, however, the feed had cut out after the Queen's sentence on not being screwed with. She looked him straight in the eye.

"Take this man away. He is not fit to dispense information to the populace."

"Our ally Allanea has fired on them..."

"Send 15 destroyers and 75 arsenal ships."

"Minimal loss of life?"

"Exactly, after the Reich War the loss of life was small but enough for people to raise a stink over it."

"After the last Civil War it shouldn't have been so bad."

"These people don't know how hard we work to make their lives comfortable."

"Shall we inform Velkya?"

"Yes, tell them we'll use our bases in Algeristan to come from the opposite side of the Burnisian ships."

"Understood"

Highly Encrypted Transmission to Velkya

We are moving in 15 Illium-class Destroyers and 75 Motherland-class Arsenal ships. They will use our bases in Algeristan to move in from the other side and join your fleet. We can't have another costly naval war, so our ships will lag behind and fire missiles and send in the arsenal ships for the final punch.

If we can raise enough public support, we can send a fleet proper.

Arx Dei, Fyre Sea

The Burnsian Desert's ships were now within striking range.

Such an announcement did not go undistinguished; the entire installation had been discomposed with angst since the announcement of The Desert's intentions of invading Velkya, and such the days activities had been in preparation for the task of defeating the said nation.

The past few hours had seemed almost surreal; the invasion force presented before them was unlike anything that had been seen attempting to enter Haven. It was why the enemy continued bollixed the stations seniority. Why push forth when insuccess is but most unequivocal?

While this question was puzzling, the answer was besides the point. The point was that an enemy fleet had entered the territorial extent of Haven, and thus had to be eliminated.

With such fleetness that had escaped the actions of the previous day, a manner of dealing with the threat at hand was put forth. Forces tasked with defending the platform took their preassigned roles, and the chief reasons for the days apprehension, the behemoth mass that was the five Nuclear Pulse Guns (NPG), monstrous weapons that had the power to sink several ships with but a single assailment, over an awesome distance that was guaranteed to strike horror in to those facing its onslaught.

With a simple order, the awe-inspiring weapons fired their first shots in anger. A mammoth explosion shook the base, as if it god himself was hurling wrath upon the enemy. Flying into the sky were five 72 inch shells, which were guided in real time. The first shell was aimed at the command ship of the approaching fleet, the impressive Doujin class ship of The Burnsian's navy. The second, third, and fourth, and finally fifth, were aimed at the fleets other Superdreadnoughts, with such force behind the warheads that complete destruction of the target was assured.

They approach..

Extra-Havenites. Being a nation in Haven, even if you had an ideological difference with everyone else, still gave you a bond with everyone else. The sanctity of Haven must not be interfered with. The Burnsian Desert - aliens, extra-havenites.

Invaders.

A small child woke up in the middle of the night with a fright. He went to his mother's bedroom, woke his parents up. He had a few tears in his eyes, the memories of the nightmare.

"Mommy..what's the Burnsian Desert?"

"How did you know about that? You haven't watched the news..ever..you don't read the paper.." his mother mused, and said, "Don't worry about it, honey, go back to bed. It was just a bad dream.."

"MOMMY! THEY'RE COMING! THEY WILL BE HERE SOON!" the boy yelled, crying.

"Go to bed." the mother said, waking the father up.

After some quick forced medication, the boy went to sleep, still dreaming about the massive Burnsian fleet descending upon Haven..

Whyatican Southern Defense Fleet, 500km south of Velkyan Territorial Waters
Some 1,500 combat vessels, most reactivated from mothballs, were the first Imperial ships to make it to the planned rally point. Two and a half thousand more Imperial vessels were coming in from the Channel, but it would take time, time that the Imperial fleet did not have. A single, old, supercapital, IWNS Renown, floated at the centre of this flotilla. Crewed hastily, supplied and fueled on the go for many of the ships, this ad-hoc flotilla would serve as the first line of defense for the Imperial/Velkyan island until more allied ships arrived.

Coastal batteries of nuclear pulse guns were being armed and pointed in the right direction. However, problems with the tracking devices on the nuclear pulse gun shell were preventing any firing from occuring immediately. Many in the Imperial High Command had retreated to the command bunkers, whilst telling the populace not to panic. The people had no reason to panic, after all - Haven was the safest region on Earth! Nobody could land on Velkyan shores, because they would need to get through the Fyre Sea Pact, and the Omz Straights alive.

Propaganda is wonderful.

The Fleet set out, a token fleet, a PR move for the Glorious Republic. In the mean time the fleets proper were being readied and waiting for the order of High Command.

The problem with making a country more and more free is that people complain and you actually have to care. Fleet Admiral O'Toole was upset with the people's lack of support. Though it was only a year after the Reich war, and while Leafanistani casualties were minimal relative to other fleets, it was high enough to cause outrage. And the tripling of the naval budget the next year to pay for it caused even more outrage.

So their tiny fleet would have to do for now.

Naval Station Cannon Beach
Dominion of New Cascadia

"Admiral," the young aide said as she saluted the superior officer, "these are the latest reports from the intelligence division. I also have several communiques from the Chief of Staff and Naval Command."

Admiral-Commandant Rebeca Travert returned the salute and grabbed the sheets of paper from the lieutenant's right hand. "That's all. Thank you, lieutenant."

Travert joined the other senior commanders in Eastern Haven to go over the reports and information coming to them from across the region. The Bursians had amassed a large invasion fleet aimed at Velkya. While Velkyan security wasn't of imperative concern to the Hamptonian government, the integrity and sanctity of Eastern Haven was paramount. A foreign invasion fleet, no matter their target, represented a dagger to the throat of all eastern Havenites. Foreign invasion was completely intolerable.

"As you can see from the reports, gentlemen," Travert began to pace the length of the relatively small room, "all indications point to the southern Aralonian Strait as being the flash point. Velkya, Whyatican, Allanean, Aralonian and other Fyre Sea nations have begun to move task forces toward that point."

Lieutenant Admiral Joseph Andrews, the commander of New Cascadia's surface warship forces, interrupted, "Have we been ordered to deploy?"

"Fleet Marshal Bjarnesen has relayed these orders from Secretary Kirkssen." The Admiral passed out copies of the orders to the other officers. "We are to dispatch the 88th Fleet Squadron toward the area. The 116th Fleet Squadron currently in dock here is to leave port immediately and join with the two Cruiser Divisions currently on patrol west of Omz."

Again Admiral Andrews interrupted, "The 88th is only five hundred and two ships. They will not be able to contribute, in any real meaningful fashion, to the major forces arrayed against the Bursians."

"The Fleet Squadron is the only force we have in the area that will be able to meet up with the Fyre Sea forces in time for the initial confrontation. The force we're sending to the party is very carrier and missile centric. Vice Admiral Zilberschlag [Commanding Officer, 88th Fleet Squadron] has been ordered to engage at range with long range ship and air launched AShM."

Travert paused for questions. When no one said anything, even the normally combative Andrews, she knew that they were all on board with the plan. "Alright gentlemen, we all have our orders. If there are any questions please contact my aides, I have to place some calls to certain Fyre Sea nations. Wish me luck."

North Point Naval Base, Skyian Province, The Silver Sky

Nothing, nothing could be heard or seen. Finally for once their was no military vessels in North Point Naval Base, not even the lowiest corvettes patrolled the waters inside the naval base, only dock workers and military vehicles remained to the protect the base.

A quick scan of the waters surrounding the great naval base would also reveal nothing, not even a submarine, however, to the north their was a small force of coast guard craft and submarines, but no real military naval forces.

They were gone, and the island was defenseless on the waters.

However, they were not totally defenseless, they still had their fighters, bombers, and interceptors, shore defence guns, even the famous 72in guns protecting all major naval harbors remained on alert. However, there was one type of gun that was more then a mere defensive gun. That was...

The Nuclear Pulse Gun Model 001, better know as the 'Ira Dei' or 'Wrath of God' NPGs. Their monstorous size and installations were a testament to Skyian and Doomani Engineering Prowess. Their were twenty of these monsters under 'Skyian Control' Two in the Artic Territories, and 18 in The Silver Sky itself. This allowed nine to ten NPGs to be able to hit any fleet approaching Northeastern Haven.

And of course, this was what they were about to do, at the NPG site outside North Point on the island of Kyria a single NPG traversed it's gigantic barrel towards the fleet. It had been feed targeting information from radar/lidar/ir satellites and INS/GPS satellites, as well as old fashioned camera satellites, all this data had been downloaded to the shell prior to launch. This shell was being loaded into the 'breech' of the gun, not so much a breech but a very large blast chamer, and inside the blast chamber was a nuclear warhead with a yield of 250 tonnes of TNT.

This gigantic amount of explosives would be used to propell the shell to near 14km/sec, hurtling the 14000kg projectile towards a Burnsian Capitol ship of choice. A total of eight of it's sisters were also going to send 'slugs o' doom' hurtling towards the Bursians, three of them targeting the 'Hellfire Enduring', simply because it was a Doujin-Class ship, which were obviously dated, the Skyians wanted to put it out of it's misery.

Several gigantic booms could be heard throught the country, as NPGs bracketed the Burnsian capitol ships with a total of 9 shells, their blast chambers were then quickly unattached and taken away to the decontamination room where it would be cleaned and melted down to nearly a plasma.

Relentless-Class SSGN Patrol; Between Midlonian West Coast and the Midlonian Greater Kingdom, 7600km from Burnsian Fleet

A force of 120 'Relentless'-Class Guided Missile Submarines had been dispatched as soon as the Burnsian Fleet had been spotted heading for the Aralonian-Barkoyian-Mackinay and Margian Straights, their payload was 24 deadly 'Khan'-Class Heavy Anti-Shipping Missile, these monsters were the size of ICBMs but so much harder to intercept.

Each of them carried a single SM4 counter-shipping warhead, the SM4 is made up of a toriod shaped charge which surrounds a 2.5 ton tungsten / DU penetrator propelled by a secondary pulse detonated shaped charge and a single 1.3 ton phosphor based incendiary. This combination ment doom for any supercapital or superdreadnought.

The submarines closed to the surface and began their launch squence, counting down from 30 any last minute aiming adjustments would need to be quickly carried out.

The count down went quickly with no hitches, and soon 2880 Khans started launch, sending themselves high into the air on quasi-ballistic flight path, they would soar high into the air and remain their for the majority of their 7800km flight, but as soon as they neared 2500km they would drop the second stage and drop to near sea level as the third stage would kick in, sending the missiles to Mach 5, the forth stage would kick in within 450km and propell the forth and final stage of the missile to Mach 11.8, and hopefully deep into the bowels of the Burnsian ships.

The submarines quickly fled the area to reload, as the Khans could guide themselves with RADAR/LADAR and LIDAR guidance, and final mode, command operated would be intiated if any of the above were to fail.

3500km from Burnsian Fleet

A force of 268 B-300C Hurriance Heavy Supersonic Strategic Bombers had been dispatched from bases in The Silver Sky, refueled above Velkya and were now on their way to deliver the third stage of hurt to the Burnsians. Each of them carried with them 24 BGM-503 Arquebus Long Range Cruise Missiles, each with a 3700km range. They were well within range of the Burnsian Fleet and began to fire at capital ships, and anything down to a cruiser, soon 9 NPG shells, 2880 Khans, and 6700 Mach 6 Arquebuses would be entering the radar range of the Burnsian Fleet.

They quickly beat a retreat towards the Northern Aralonian Island to refuel before heading back to The Silver Sky to rearm.

This was all the damage the Skyians could cause... for now.

Skyian 3rd and 4th Naval Armadas, Whyatican Channel

With the 2nd Armada being dispatched to Afghan Isle to support the 1st Armada the 3rd and 4th Armadas had been dispatched to deal with the Burnsian Fleets. Instead of taking the long route around Velkya or Space Union, they were to take the shortest route, through the Whyatica Straight, they were nearly all way through when the attacks were launched.

A message was sent to the Midlonian Government about the presence of the fleet, and the potential enemy action coming ahead, as well as the crossing of important Midlonian, and Haven, trade routes.

Their 2182 ships would sit in the triangle made by the Midlonian Greater Kingdom and the Midlonian West Coast waiting for the Burnsian Fleet to enter range of their missiles.

Many traps lay in wait for the invading fleets.

Nuclear Pulse Gun 'Abel'

The commander of Abel was screaming orders over the general din of his subordinate cannon, a massive seventy two inch gun, powered by none other than a nuclear device. This particular commander, a colonel in the Allied Union Army, was generally known as a "harass", but he got the job done, commanding a certain respect from the men under his command. The base resembled a turret that had been torn off a giant tank and thrown onto a re-bar base. Outside of the cannon housing were two armored warehouses, one holding the gargantuan kinetic energy vehicles, the other holding the sub kiloton nuclear warheads that would act as their propellant. Currently, a covered conveyor ran from both warehouses, bringing both the nuke and the KEV to the armored base of the turret.

Back inside the control room, the omnipresent commander's voice boomed again.

"LOAD CHARGE!"

A nearby officer called out a quick, "Loading charge, sir!” tapping his tactile enabled liquid crystal display, causing the internal machinery of the weapon to load the nuclear charge into the heavily reinforced firing chamber. The charge locked into place, announced by a feminine automated voice. The storm came again, ringing through the thoroughly (with good reason) sound proofed walls of the room.

"LOAD WARHEAD!"

Seconds later, the process was repeated, the equally well reinforced shell was slammed into the breech, placed in the position which would allow it to take the most advantage from the coming nuclear blast. The main officer, probably the second in command, turned in his chair towards the commanding officer of the.

"Ready to fire, sir."

Softening his gaze possibly for the first time in his time as the ranking man here, the commander smirked.

"Give 'em hell, soldier."

The officer pressed a sequence of buttons. Before the thunderous roar drowned the landscape in deafness, the officer turned to his superior.

"Never know what hit 'em, colonel."

It howled out of the massive barrel, screaming at impossible velocities towards the Burnsian fleet. It shed its protective casing, reducing its bore to sixty inches. Across the nation, other nuclear pulse cannons began a constant barrage of the enemy fleet, a barrage of eight shells directed at the command ships of the enemy fleet on the hour, every hour. This would damage the weapon in the long term, but for now all the stops were being pulled to send the Burnsians to the bottom of the Omz Strait before they could threaten the mainland.

Omz Strait

Massive. The largest naval deployment in Haven history. Though the targets of the encroaching scum were Velkyan, they were enemies of all of those who basked in the warm waters of the Fyre Sea. The flags of Velkya, Whyatica, The Silver Sky, Aralonia Praetonia and Willink flapped effortlessly in the breeze, as an assembled fleet of over twenty six thousand allied warships stood between the aggressors and the innocents of Velkya, and none a single inch of pristine ocean would be given to these barbarians.

To reinforce this point, thousands of bombers were pouring out of air bases on the mainland, deploying long range cruise missiles with ranges of many hundreds of nautical miles. These massive formations comprised of SB-26 Sonic supersonic strategic bombers, each with a war load of several dozen missiles. Spread out over thousands of miles, these bombers converged on the enemy warships from every possible direction in multiwave attacks. As they passed into range, electronic countermeasures systems activated as they began firing hundreds of thousands of active/passive radar and laser inertial guided cruise missiles from far beyond the range of enemy surface-to-air missiles and fighter aircraft. To further ensure their survival, the bombers, lightened by the release of their payload, activated their jammers once again, slamming their afterburners in, their airspeeds climbing to over three times the speed of sound. Their pilots, having war gamed this exercise countless times and drilled it into memory, set courses for bases in the surrounding nations, with every second meaning an increased proximity to the allied surface-to-air and fighter umbrella.

This was only the first stage of the Velkyan counterattack, however. Fire control computers streamed raw, real time data into the computer brains of thousands of Khan Class anti-shipping missiles, mere moments before their cold launch systems expelled them out of strategic vertical launch cells all across the fleet. For millisecond, they floated effortlessly into the air, their naval camouflage gleaming in the sun. Then, their rocket motors kicked in, and with a swoosh they ascended into the exosphere, trailing thin streams of vapor. The second stages detached, revealing a liquid fuel motor, which promptly ignited upon reentry, making any necessary course corrections as they made the transition from a Mach 5.6 reentry dive to a Mach 11 terminal attack run, during which not even God himself would be able to stop it.

In addition, ten thousand hypersonic Arquebus II cruise missiles ripped upward from the fleet’s vertical launch cells, as part of the “skirmishing” phase of the battle. Even though the two opposing armadas were still at considerable distance from one another, only the most long ranged missile systems would be able to get a realistic kill. But, that would soon change. Both fleets were closing on each other, and soon shorter ranged anti-shipping weapons would be brought to bear, and eventually the oddly anachronistic naval cannon, still packing the same punch it did fifty years ago.

The seas would run red with the blood of patriots this day, this day of days.

A lesson learned during the 'Chinese Incident' was that propaganda was more important then men. The gears of war began turning, posters flew out, television ads, patriotic words, what red-blooded person couldn't resist. It appealed to people's deepest instincts to protect their tribe. Voluntary Reenlistment jumped up, factory efficiency increased, the public was ready to accept, nay demanding to deploy Leafanistan's full naval support for its ally.

As the Burnsian Fleet closed the skies above their ships echoed, a booming noise. Louder than the roar of their cannons, and what sounded like a low chant was heard in the sky.

Miles and Miles above them, a satellite was beaming a powerful radio wave at the resonance frequency of clouds. The clouds were gigantic speakers, for the most powerful propaganda too in the Leafanistani arsenal.

A voice rang out, clear and loud, deep and yet somehow polyphonic. Something ethereal. Years of psychological studies, especially into the minds of devout schizophrenics had determined this was the voice that most people accepted as 'God'. It resonated in their bodies, it felt pure, at the same time so foreboding and angry. This was not a loving God, but a vengeful God, a mad God.

"HOW DARE YOU!"

The booming voice fell on the Burnsian Fleet.

"YOU HAVE BETRAYED ME."

The sound of thunder now echoed.

"YOU PREY ON YOUR BROTHERS, AND FOR THIS YOU SHALL PAY!"

The thunder on a clear day returned.

"Cursed shall you be in the city, and cursed shall you be in the country."
"Cursed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl."
"Cursed shall be your offspring and the produce of your ground, the increase of your herd and the young of your flock."
"Cursed shall you be when you come in, and cursed shall you be when you go out."
"I am who am will send upon you curses, confusion, and rebuke, in all you undertake to do, until you are destroyed and until you perish quickly, on account of the evil of your deeds, because you have forsaken Me."
"I am who am will make the pestilence cling to you until I have consumed you from the land where you are entering to possess it."
"I am who am will smite you with fiery destruction, with the sword, with the mildew and chase you from the land where you are entering to possess it."
"I am who am will make the rain of your land powder and dust; from heaven it shall come down on you until you are destroyed."
"I am who am shall cause you to be defeated before your enemies; you will go out one way against them, but you will flee seven ways before them, and you will be an example of terror to all the kingdoms of the earth."
"You shall become a horror, a proverb, and a taunt among all the people where I am who am will drive you."
"So all these curses shall come on you and pursue you and overtake you until you are destroyed, because you did not obey I am who am your God by keeping my commandments and my statutes which I have commanded you"
"You and your proud ships, your proud armies, your proud machines, shall be pounded into dust."

The thunder clapped, the sailors removed their hands from their ears, and the roar of what seemed to be God was gone. All that was left was the now very quiet sailing of their ships, and the growing screech of missiles coming in.

Willinkian Homeland Fleet, 3000km off of Praetonia

The brilliancy gleam of the deck of the WNF-Formidable, newly polished, was alive with the movements of crew members, officers, and various observers who received clearance to take the journey on the massive beast to view the upcoming battle.

The ship, along with the two thousand others of the Willinkian Home Fleet, 1st Squadron, were among the front most ships in intercepting the approaching Burnsian massed naval force, a task which was met with a mix of excitement and canniness by the thousands upon thousands of sailors partaking in event.

Throughout the fleet, nuclear reactors and CODAG engines increased power output as the fleet readied to full speed, the ships turning in unison as they set course for just south of Velkya.

3rd Expeditionary Fleet.

"Command just dialed in, Grand Battery is holding fire until the battle commences, and the Marines are inbound to Velkya*, estimated time of arrival is four hours."

Admiral James W. Mackenzie thanked the communications officer and turned back to the display. The 3rd was closing on the allied formations, and would reach them with time to spare for final preparations before the onslaught. Unlike some of its allies, Izistan was not going to play the NPG trump card, just yet anyway.

Distant sparks of rocket fire trailing exhaust grew from the decks of the Polaris Area Defense Vessels were accelerating through the air, several hundred ZMI built Khan (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Khan_Class_Missile) ballistic anti-ship missiles had just been loosed from the strategic tubes of the ADV's, targeted mainly at the assault transports in the Burnsian fleet (although a dozen or so were thrown at the venerable Doujin). Didn't want to keep the sharks hungry after all...

The hypersonic "planes" would hit the Burnsian formation hard, seeing as they were loaded with MAS Interdiction's (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/MAS_Interdiction), specifically the heavy variety. What fun was going to be had...Just not by those on the receiving end of all this ordinance.

The take off of the Type 900 squadron also freed up the particular runway for a host of sub orbital UAV's. After all, what was an attack without a follow up damage assessment? Not only that, but the 307th Spacial Force had several ICARUS** SSTO's rolled out to their individual launch pads, payload bays open to receive any modular cargo that needed to be fitted in a great hurry.

Izistani Aerospace bases around the country.

All Izistani forces had gone on full non-nuclear alert. Civilian air traffic (the few flights that hadn't been forced to land) were flown under escort, fighter exhaust trails criss-crossed the arcology crowded sky of Izistan City, and a swarm of Isselmerian Tiger interceptors waited in hardened shelters on the coastal bases. There was nothing to be gained from taking chances on this day.

~ Marinis Hall, Getthehelloutofourcountryevilforeignpigdogsdiediedieatopia. The Divisions. ~

"Gentlemen, and ladies, are we in agreement here?"

Donovan Ladd let his eyes run over the faces of the other men and women sitting around the long round table. Perspiration was plainly visible on all of them; and, Ladd suspects, on his own face as well. Papers are scattered before them, dossiers of troop strengths and fleet movements. Behind them were LCD screens showing real-time satellite shots and overlays of the various Havenic fleet movements. It is Ladd's defence minister, Gregor Lyubovtsey, who spoke first.

"Mr. Premier, I still cannot see -- first -- how this attack on Velkya threatens Catalasian sovereignty in any way, and second how much good a Catalasian task force could do with allied support of over twenty thousand ships, against a comparatively small eight thousand. I also hasten to remind you that the Defence Council has yet to approve our latest purchases, meaning that the Divisions Navy is still relatively under-strength, with only six thousand combat ships, total."

Ladd sighed. "Very well, Mr. Lyubovtsey. First, this is an attack on Haven and thus an attack on all nations of Haven, a category which the Divisions certainly falls into. Second, the Archipelago is positioned perfectly that if we deploy even just our submarine fleet via St. Andrews, we can block off the southern Omz Strait in case the remnants of the Burnsian fleet attempt to flee to there."

Ladd turned to the man next to Lyubovtsey. "Mr. Stark, do you have any objections to this?"

"No, sir," Alejandro Stark said, tucking a strand of wispy grey hair behind an ear. Stark did not look like a military commander; he resembled a university professor, with large glasses, an almost bald head, and a full beard and moustache. "In fact, the plan you just outlined is exactly what I'm prepared to order the Divisions Navy to do."

"Excellent. In that case, the Defence Council is dismissed, with full authorisation to deploy the 4th and 5th Grand Fleets to blockade."

Ladd picked up his dossier, tucked it under his arm, and vanished into the ill-lit darkness of the room. The members of the Defence Council looked at one another, then began to rise as well, departing the other direction via the door through which they came.

~ St. Andrews Joint Military Base, Northeastern Divisions ~

Klaxons were wailing, in agony almost, and red lights were flashing; while the base erupted into frenzied activity, General John R. Kaihoun was smoking a cigarette.

Kaihoun watched as people ran to and fro below, piling into the submergibles; he took a drag as on another screen aircraft began to take off, bound for aircraft carriers; he tapped some ashes to the shiny steel floor as the cruiser squadrons began to leave port, bound for the blockade line.

Kaihoun was standing, not in a building, but in a ship. He was on the bridge of the DNS Starfire, perhaps the most massive ship ever commissioned into the Divisions Navy. It was a floating fortress, two kilometres in length, and more than thirty million tonnes in displacement. It had taken sixteen years to build, and while its technologies were not exactly the most modern, they were still highly reliable, and effective.

The Starfire (which I'll stat as soon as I have time) was moving at its top speed of five knots into the Omz Straits. While its forward guns were pointing straight ahead, its aft guns appeared to be inactive; instead, most of the workers were clustering around the VL arrays and heavy missile tubes behind the superstructure.

Kaihoun crushed the cigarette under his heel and stumped over to the far end of his office, watching the strategic display. More than four hundred submarines were being deployed in a picket line across international waters; for every two submarine squadrons there was a cruiser squadron, the missile cruisers assembled in small lines to unleash their payloads upon anyone who approached, and the gun cruisers lurking along the perimeters, guns fully loaded and prepared. A picket of destroyers also surrounded the Floating Fortress itself. It was a comparatively small fleet, formed up in a traditional Catalasian formation. But it was still capable of unleashing destructive force on anything that got withiin range.

North of the blockade a battle was brewing. Thousands of allied ships would meet thousands of enemy ships around Aralonia; the battle could rage for hours or days or weeks. Kaihoun had discussed this with the other commanders. The hard-bitten admiral, a disillusioned ex-marine who had seen combat more places than the average schoolchild could find on a map, knew exactly what he was supposed to do.

Without significant power and with the ridiculous overkill of all of the fleets, the more sensible Divisions Navy didn't really have a place in the battle. However, on the off chance something would survive and try to escape, there would be one primary direction still not blocked off via which it could -- the southern Omz Sea.

That was where Kaihoun came in. His formation would destroy anything Burnsian, or allied to it, that happened to enter the Omz Straits from either direction. If anything did. Kaihoun was a bit unhappy about the arrangement; he would prefer not to be a backup, after all; but someone had to do it, and besides, the other allied forces were all in the Fyre Sea Pact, which the Divisions did not participate in -- hence, its comparative lack of participation in this operation as well.

Kaihoun lit another cigarette.

RBS Hellfire Enduring
Aralonian Strait

The Allanean NPG rounds slammed into the Hellfire Enduring's broadside. A sailor standing right inside of the shell's impact point ruptured both of his eardrums and began babbling madly about cats stealing his clowns. Two more shells hit, with similar effects on a cook and a cabin-boy. Each was taken to the ship's infirmary and expected to make a recovery in a few days, albeit with a loss of hearing ability.

Two minutes later, the NPG rounds from the Willinkian Arx Dei did far more damage. The High General and captain of the ship, Ji-Lou Khan, was thrown from the bridge, and flew into the water. 16,099 sailors were instantly killed when a shell slammed into the ammunition storage of the vessel, effectively blowing off the stern. Thousands more were killed as sharks began to devour the maimed men. The other Doujin-Class Superdreadnaughts were similarly crippled, and began rapidly sinking. The other superdreadnaughts (13 in total) Turned their guns on Aralonia, launching salvos of hundreds of cruise missiles at the NPGs there. The entire Burnsian fleet scrambled fighter-bombers, which soared forward, looking for targets. Sighting the Whyatican fleet some 1100 km away, and loosed (nearly ancient) Exocet-IV anti-shipping missiles at the supply ships. Breaking, the formations headed back to reload.

Soon after, Skyian NPG projectiles crashed into the twisted, flaming hulk of the Hellfire Enduring. Several other nearby ships were sunk, mostly destroyers. 24,499 men died as the shells ripped through the decks. Several thousand more were thrown into the water, hanging on the scraps of wood, a lifejacket, or, with luck, a beaten, overcrowded and burning lifeboat.

The Khan-class missiles came next, penetrating deep into the Burnsian logistics vessels where the Burnsian Army units were stored. 732,822 men were murdered, their bodies sinking to the deep, cold waters of the Aralonian Strait. The remaining Doujin-class SDs began firing SSMs at any and all surface contacts out of despiration. However, only 1,108 missiles were loosed. Several exploded in the VLS tubes; the sailors were too frightened to remember to open the doors.

Just when the Burnsian sailors thought the attack couldn't get any worse, the Arquebus missiles rained down. Thousands of more men died, some 12,071 souls. These missiles did little more damage since most of the fleet had been decimated already by the Khans, and the Arquebus' targets were no longer in existance. More ships sank.

Ji-Lou Khan looked, through clouded eyes, at the charred hulk before him. The Hellfire Enduring, once a proud vessel of the Burnsian Navy, was reduced to less than scrap. A primal urge gripped him. He stared at the mast of the ship... there, flying, were the colors of The Burnsian Desert. Red, white, and black. His eyes welled up with tears. He had failed. He was no longer in any position to command a fleet... he thought back to his days in the Burnsian Naval Academy. The hierarchy of leadership... he thought. One, accomplish the mission... two, bring glory to the Desert... three, save Burnsian lives... He had failed the first two. It was time to accomplish the third.

He pulled out of his pocket a waterproof, high-power, high-durability radio transciever. Holding it close to his bloodied mouth, he spoke.

"To any and all Coalation forces... this is High General Ji-Lou Khan, commander of Combined Universal Burnsian Forces... we give unto you our complete, unconditional surrender. To all Burnsian vessels, stand down... I say again, stand down..." he repeated the message three more times, and slumped down into the lifeboat, unconscious.

More missiles ravaged the Burnsian fleet. This time, they were Velkyan. There wasn't much more for these missiles to do; a further 20,712 men died when they hit the remaining destroyers and battleships. Another Doujin-Class Superdreadnaught sank, its superstructure screaming in protest.

Out of nowhere, the Voice of God fell down upon the Burnsians. He admonished them for their sins... several Burnsians, floating on the surface of the water, maimed, disheveled, simply let go of their lifejackets and sunk to the deep. Over half of the Burnsian Desert was Anglecan, and the abandonment by their own God was too much to take. It would be said that God had killed some 540 men in the waters of Haven.

The Burnsian Desert

"The fleet is decimated, your Highness," said a technician, looking at a photograph of the fleet, pre- and post-attack.

The Queen's face was twisted in a mask of emberassment and fury. She stormed out of the room and walked down towards the 'Nuke Tank', a room where the Burnsian stockpiles of nuclear weapons were controlled.

The commander of the room snapped to attention as she entered. In a low, even tone, she said, "I want you to disintegrate East Haven. Every nation there is to be reduced to radioactive plate glass."

A technician, hearing this and becoming horrified of the Queen's words, began working out a lock on the weapons. Suddenly, he heard the crack of a pistol. He turned. Behind him was the wild-eyed figure of the Queen, standing over the corpse of his commanding officer. He began to type more rapidly. She turned. Seeing what he was doing, the Queen shot him, execution-style, in the back of the head. His brain matter covered his command console. Hurriedly, she typed in the launch codes.

The Strategic Command Center evaporated, taking the Queen and the other 185,019 souls that worked there with it. However, one 5kt nuclear weapon was fired at the Aralonian Nonagon in Nonagonia.

Incoming missiles, said the sensor officer onboard the IWNS Repulse.

"What do you expect me to do about it?" Grand Admiral Richard Bethesda said, as the automatic CIWS systems opened up on the outdated barrage of Exocet missiles.

The problem is, many of the CIWS systems on this hastily reactivated fleet were living up to their namesake - Christ, It Won't Shoot!. Many of the anti-ballistics systems onboard the escorts were unarmed, broken, or otherwise unoperational - RAM systems fared better, having been rearmed as a priority. Sparse fire from gun-based CIWS and RAM mounts picked off missiles as they came, but the Grand Admiral had another idea.

"Point A turret at the barrage and fire a full spread, HE rounds." he yelled over the clamor, technicians desperately trying to get the CIWS systems running before the missiles hit.

The massive 29.1" gun turret of Renown rotated to face the incoming missile horde, and fired fire rounds into the spam. The detonation shocked many of the Exocets out of the proper path, destroying a large chunk of them. More and more CIWS systems came active as the rather slow Exocet missiles closed in..

Thank heavens Exocets only moved at ~315m/sec or so, for the vast, vast majority of the incoming missiles were destroyed. Four impacted the destroyer flotilla, scratching the paint on the heavy destroyers and starting minor fires on the others. One hit an unlucky patrol boat that happened to be in the area, making a rather large KABOOM! which destroyed the boat and killed the unfortunate four people on it.

"Grand Admiral..casualties have been estimated at 5 sailors. We are receiving a signal from the Burnsian fleet."

The bridge crew listened to the broadcast from the Burnsian High Commander in shock. The Burnsian fleet was at least 8,000 ships when they entered Havenic waters..the missile salvo had destroyed them so thoroughly.

"Move to collect survivors. Order the PT boats to move ahead of us and begin picking up survivors. There have to be a few million of them, so signal the Allied fleets." the Grand Admiral said, paling at the prospective of millions of casualties.

This could just be the beginning..

Near the Burnsian fleet

That was it. The entire battle had ended just as soon as it had started. The Burnsian's fleet, decimated, burning, and beaten, lay ravaged, losing over half of its ships and suffering damage exceedingly more. Such a sight brought both glee and sorrow to the faces of the Willinkian sailors, both the largest defeat and greatest tragedy every witnessed by many of them.

Fleet Admiral of the Willinkian Naval Force, Francis Letton, set forth a plan to save as many sailors in the water as possible. The Formidable's hundreds of smaller escape boats and motor landing ships were detached, and sent forward to pick up survivors. All in all, nearly 600 small craft were in the water, picking the beaten and discouraged survivors of the ordeal out of the cold sea, before returning them to the Formidable.

The injured were taken to the ships hospital ward, while the uninjured were kept in the massive transport hold/staging center, which had provisions and the capability to hold nearly five thousand men. Ensign Joseph Vledksi quickly scanned the hold and found the man he was looking for.

High General Ji-Lou Khan ?

It would be gracious if you would come with me sir, our Fleet Admiral admirably requests your presence at the bridge."

Bridge of the WNF-Formidable

Sir, after the upcoming final sweep for sailors in the water, our orders are to set sail for The Burnsian Homeland.

Have they not suffered enough so far? Is one battle insufficient to satisfy ones taste for violence?

Well, Sir, as much as I must agree with your attitude, I fear that orders are orders and therefor we must go through with them.

Well, fine, I suppose you are right. After the final sweep for surviors is completed, adjust the course settings, increase the fleets speed to 28 knots, and try and transfer the seriously injured onboard to the WNF-Regina for medical assistance.

Confirmed Admiral, I will process a response to the rest of the fleet.

With that, the large door to the central bridge post swung open.

"Yes, sir. Approximately 5,000 vessels sunk, 1,900 damaged, and casualties are still being estimated for the enemy. The head of the troop transport flotilla is signalling that they're ready to depart when we are."

"Well. Set course to the Burnsian Desert, 2,000 nautical miles away from their shore. General Dunn, we need to discuss new strategies." Jackson said, signalling to his army counterpart.

Dunn kicked him, and the Marine woke up with a start.

Zukariaan Haven
The recent Burnsian invasion of Haven, even failed, was of great interest to the Zukariaan Empire. Zukariaa held a small colony in southeastern Haven, rather close to where the Burnsians had invaded on their way to Velkya. Admiral Hermann, commander of the small fleet that the Zukariaans operated in Haven, was notified from the High Commander himself to move out. The forces of Haven would likely be counterattacking the Burnsian Desert for their failed invasion, and the High Commander had decided that through helping the Havenites against the Burnsian Desert, even if very little, the Zukariaans might be able to annex a small area of land.

The chances were slim that such a small force would be able to take a significant amount of land during the course of the invasion, but any contribution to the defeat of the Burnsian Desert was a contribution none the less. The force was to link up with the Whyatican fleet and move with them.
