6. A mission is sacred, you will carry it out until the end respecting laws, customs of war, international conventions and, if necessary, at the risk of your life. (Changed in November 2000)
7. In combat, you will act without passion and without hate, you will respect the vanquished enemy, you will never abandon your dead or wounded, nor surrender your arms.
~ Foreign Legion Code of Honor
Maréchal de France Pierre Louis stood before a mass congregation of weary legionnaires, each wearing their immaculate white uniforms with the flaming scarlet epaulettes and famous kepi blanc upon their heads. FAMAS rifles slung over the shoulder of each rifleman, while standing at rigid attention before the Maréchal. They were an impressive sight to behold, the epitome of a disciplined and trained soldier. Louis was proud of each of them.
"Men," he began, his deep barotone bass voice echoing through the troops as men stood in long rows, many ranks deep. "Legionnaires! It is a sad day that we no longer serve our parent nation, France, but it is for the best. This state no longer exists for us, and as such: we must set out on our own. We now live and fight for each other! An Army which fights and campaigns for itself! Each legionnaire amongst us must know that in these times he plays an integral role in fighting and defending the honor and fidelity of the whole, and ultimately for himself as well. To support ourselves, we shall become an organization for war, a company which hires itself out to needy nations to fight their battles, and win for our glory! Men, you all shall be a part of this brave new day for the Legion! Men, may we each find everlasting glory!" Cheers erupted from the enourmous crowd as the man standing before them rose his fist into the air, demanding respect and triumph. The Foreign Legion was now for hire.
Back within the TOC (Tactical Operations Center) for the Legion's Commander, numerous Général d'Armées sat in wooden chairs, each with their eyes fixated upon Pierre Louis, who was sitting at the head of the table. After a silence so thick that one could cut with a knife, the Maréchal de France finally said, "Gentlemen, we need a plan on how we should deploy."
Général d'Armée David Ghould replied instantly, "I believe strongly in the rotating Brigade strategy."
Curious, Louis responded, "And this is?"
"In essence, we rent our men out by the brigade. Three thousand five hundred soldiers to each brigade, and the nation which requests our forces may hire as many brigades as they feel necessary to complete their aims." Nods of approval moved all about the table, and Louis himself found he was nodding in agreement.
"Very well then," Louis spoke with a smile. "That seems to settle that. Now how much should we rent our forces out for?"
Another Général replied, "I would suggest possibly one hundred twenty-five thousand per each brigade. If this is said to be too high, we can always lower the price eh?"
"That is acceptable as well. Good job gentlemen, now we must only organize our forces." This would be a painstaking exercise for each of them. Grouping together their force took a significant amount of time, but after hours of tedious debate, and drawing up ORBAT (Order of Battle) plans, they reached agreement.
"Then it is done. Men, return to your camps, and I shall await word from the international community."
