Question on Future Tech

Ok, well I am still deciding on whether I want to make Taji a Future Tech or Modern/Post-Modern nation, but I do have a question. What are the basic rules for using a future tech nation? As in technology, both civilian and military, and populations and such. Because its not very feasable(or is it pheasable) for a country of 10 million to command the respect of an entire planet of people and project themselves in intergalactic politics. I have ideas on how to cross that bridge, and I do know that as long as I make sure its alright with anyone I role play with that I can adjust my population to make it a little more realistic.

But for the technology part of my question I have no idea. I know that a lot of people use Star Wars, Star Trek, that one Galactica show and so forth for ideas, but as Im not a big fan of any of those, minus Star Wars, I do not really know a whole lot of the lingo, and tech talk aside from hyperdrive, sheilds, and laser beams.

If anyone could help me out it would be appreciated.

i would recomend you stick with mt/pmt for now, until get experiance, to set up a FT nation is no easy task and rping them is harder still, so play a month or two before ft.

while waiting read ft one posted now and ones posted whenever to give you ideas, as for tech, you could try custom tech or play a bit with known ft for practice.

or we can RP that a space ship (like a sleeper ship) stumbles upon my little FT deam called onosis, and i can give you some nifty ft tech that is not from star trek etc. but wtv :p

hope this help

also, FT tends to be pure role play, very little of you NS nations stats are used, other wise you would have to take a very long time before you got good battle goin.

If you're serious about RPing FT. Then take out a notepad, or open up word, and write down the important bits of your FT concept. It helps you remember things, and can give clarity to your overall picture now that you can look at it all at once instead of trying to look at it through the chaos of your mind.

Also this is a 'roleplay' forum, which means knowing a billion acronyms and having a PhD in physics != you being kickass. It means that there needs to be characters, character development, and some sort of central plot that doesn't devolve into "lawl i shewt @ u!"

Another thing to remember is that it's all free-form: recognize, ignore, and develop whatever you want to: NS isn't a wargame, you can't lose anything.

Ive been playing nationstates since before the jolt server switch. I just made a new nation.

So, I dont really need to know advice on roleplaying in general, just on specific issues to future tech.

Make up your own stuff if you want. Custom things are just as good as using stuff from a setting. The thing to remember is to remain consistant in your technology. Granted you can improve your tech over time and that makes perfect sense but if you switch between SW, ST, BSG, and any others out there as shows, movies, or books then people might not take you seriously.

Try to find something that you can use as your trademark and stick with that. It will make your nation more believable from a RP perspective.

After that, using your imagination is the next important. Be creative and make interesting characters and other stuff. Get out there and post in a few Threads but make sure you don't bite off more than you can chew. If you jump into too many Threads you might get overwhelmed, especially when trying to establish your nation.

Decide on a mindset for your people, set long term goals, and follow through with both. Develop a "feeling" for your people and stick with it. Some have used a created language to flavor their posts, others have taken an aspect (like being robotic/chaotic/ect...) and modeled their speech/attitudes after it when communicating. The choice is yours and only limited by good sense and imagination.

though FT tends to bite itself on the tail when it come to physics, FTL is nessasary but some things that go against our understanding of physics might be ignored, also he is right, i have a huge folder of writing drawings for uniform cities fleets weapons characters, some will never see the light of day.

Also try to avoid huge wars, most people ruin stories with the all my ships launch 1BILLLION!!!111 rockzors missles, so watch who you play with.

What is your other nation? Just curious...

I've been around pre-move too.

Haha. I sort of figured out the folder thing with my last nation, but I had some organization issues and started deviating from my original idea as I went on.

Im not really too good role playing wars on huge scales because Im not very good at writing for huge numbers for some reason. I guess its hard for me to micro manage all the little cogs I need in it. So I usually stick to role plays that involve a few central characters, or I like to write a lot of character development for my main characters which are basically nothing more than short stories.

Around that time it was Caanan, I dont think thats how it was spelled but I forget. I really didnt get involved in too many role plays back then. Then I had Nascent, and now Taji. I also had one before Caanan but I forget its name.

Hey, a pre-move player! Hey good to see me, Balrogga, and a couple others aren't the only one left!

I remember you.... Vagely but I remember you.

Personally, I believe that if your writing is by and large better than that of your opponent's (assuming that you two didn't work it all before hand like you should), then that great thing we call victory should gravitate in your direction. I say this because there isn't a point in someone 'winning' if their writing sucks or is needlessly dull (a field guide to space warfare is very often not fun to read). Though, if the prospect of big war scares you, it'd probably be best to join a big alliance of some sort that can watch your back, so to speak (assuming you accept any attack that comes your way) while you go on about your business. That's how most handle it anyway.

I lurk. Randomly. And just as I vanish, and just as it seems you have forgotten...

I reappear just to let you know that I'm still here.

There's no reason you can't do both!

When you get tired of MT go to FT for a few hours/days whatever, and vice versa!

This is true, I RP Skgorria as a MT and a FT nation, even though my current FT thread has an MT nation in it...argh a little bit confusing! :p

But by doing so I find it hard to legitimize your FT nation. And vise versa.
